The fate of humanity lies in the balance as war rages in the multiverse.
Blissfully unaware of this existential threat, people on Earth dream of lives on other worlds, receiving nightly memories that include first-hand knowledge of how to develop fantastical powers. Hector Thoreaux already has a lot to deal with. His father is dying and his marriage is ending. Yet now he dreams of a seemingly untalented war orphan learning to cultivate among the Xian.
Misbegotten Memories is a slow burn progression fantasy following the journey of Hector from an aging workaholic to the heights of power.

- BamfMRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read a lot of stories on RR, and while I tend to eventually drop many of them, every now and then I come across something that truly stands out. Misbegotten Memories is one of those rare gems, beautifully written and absolutely worth following.
The story goes far beyond the usual cultivation formula. I’m not normally a fan of the genre, especially when it leans on sect politics, arrogant masters (young or not-so-young), and all the other tropes that usually turn me away.
I’m tempted to write more, but I don’t think my words could do the story justice, you really should experience it for yourself. What’s my cup of tea might not be yours, but Misbegotten Memories is absolutely worth giving a chance.
Overall, this is one of the few novels on the site that I genuinely enjoy. I’m glad I found it, and it’s firmly in the small group of stories I actively follow. - DembedRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Where I am at currently in the 30 chapter it's been at a nice pace.
We get to live through both of the MC eyes and I never got the feeling it's pointless.
Every info we get, be it cultivation, tech or their lifes is in good bite sized pieces and is a big positive.
The MC and all other characters have their flaws and it makes them human.
No real combat yet, but the progression build up is believable and engaging. No boring moment yet and I am hooked to see more.
The grammar is top notch and the style choice for the story makes me more involved.
Sad I found this story now, on the other side lucky I can binge
Edit after the binge to the 280
I can safely say, that the story did not disappoint in any way.
All characters show growth and the journey of the MC is so satisfying to watch.
We got into many fights and they are very interesting, luckily not stretched out long.
The world building, power system consistency are top notch. Taking my enjoyment to the next level without any brakes.
I recommend this overwhelmingly. It is one of the hidden gems that deserve a chance from the mature mind. - DemigirlbossRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Misbegotten Memories is one of the most interesting stories I've read on this site. When I first picked it up, I spent two days straight absolutely glued to my screen as I caught up through the chapter backlog. In the roughly two volumes since, it has been, at various points, heartbreaking, epic, frustrating, cathartic, and just plain fun.
This story is not for everyone. It is neither so classically perfect that it will resonate with every reader, nor is it such easygoing schlock that you can turn off your brain and just enjoy the pretty colours. Hector is at times a profoundly frustrating protagonist, and there are absolutely times when I find myself wanting to grab him by the shoulders and shake some sense into him. You will absolutely need to put some trust in the author to know what they're doing and to be able to pay off the frustrations they incur, but if you can sit through some of Hector's more grating character flaws and trust the author to know what they're doing (which they absolutely do), this is legitimately one of the best stories on this website, and most definitely worth any reader's time.
And you know I mean every word of that because we don't even get bonus chapters in exchange for reviews anymore! :P - GwalmeichRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After a supernatural world changing event, our protagonist abandons their old life and go on a quest of self discovery, and maybe also to save the world a couple of times in the process. The author did a pretty good job at integrating an entire multiverse of world building in relation to the characters living in the story, while maintaining the occasional element of tension in the story. If you like adventure stories, come along and see how our protagonist build themselves a purpose worth following!
- LoeksnokesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well, I am absolutely loving it right now, although I am a little stressed about the direction things are headed.
What is great: there has been real thought into how magic(s) work)s( in this universe at the macro scale, and it is really, really very cool. I am not convinced yet in the micro scale. Another positive is I really connect with the MC, and the other characters are also well thought out when they are of import.
Not so great: tragedy is coming, and nobody looks like they will be in shape to face it.
Early days yet. Join me for what promises to be a wild ride!!
OK, for the Advanced review:
Overall Score (5): I am loving the story. There are many new ideas here, mashing up things usually kept separate in serials on this site. I love it.
Style Score (5): I love how the story is told. Third person, mostly from the MC's perspective, but other views also add a lot of value. Everything is shown, very little is just flat told (except some things from manuals, where I really don't mind too much because it serves like an effective and informative "time skip"). I think it would be grand if the individual systems of magic that appear were explained in more detail: I found the description of "Cultivation" to be a bit wanting, but other systems I felt I understood better. I absolutely love the ideas and the mixing that I see occurring, and think that has been worked into the story very cleverly. I have met many of the detestable characters that appear here, and they are brought in at perfect times to keep the story exciting while they interact (interfere) with the main plot arcs. Even the good characters are a pleasure to read about (although perhaps reflective of the author's opinion on people (??) there just are not so many of these around!).
Grammar Score (4.5): No sentence has been written so poorly as to distract me from the story. I also cannot remember any particular sentence which I thought was incredibly clever in delivery (like you might find in, s - OrionSanjeetRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Sorry, I'm not long winded enough in text to submit a advanced review.
I've read a LOT of stories on this site(an embarrassing amount really) I've since had to be more selective so as to not waste all my time, this story has made it into my rotation. Normally dual protagonist stories kinda suck, you like one more than the other, or it's obvious the author does, this author pulled it off in my opinion.
In short, I like it. - Something_wittyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't usually write reviews, but I've been addicted to this story for a while so I feel I should say something about it:
You have read lots of xianxia and are starting to get tired of the same tropes time and again. If that's you, you may like this story.
Don't expect a psychotic MC. Seriously, there are lots of stories like that, this is not one. MC is a regular guy working at a warehouse. Then he becomes a cultivator. As a nobody, it's easy to have principles. Part of the struggle in the story is him trying to not let power corrupt him.
Do expect psychotic cultivators. The story gets seriously hardcore at points.
There is character depth. Characters can be assholes without that being all they are. MC can be mad at someone and still be wrong, etc... People are complex and all that shit.
For the first book, there is a lot of POV switching in the form of dreams. I know, nobody likes alternate POVs. Keep reading. The dreams are directly linked to the main storyline, and it makes it more fun to read while the main character is still weak. - VolmenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0this is a great story. basically a system apocalypse but without the system and the apocalypse is a ways away but they are already getting powers.
the powers in this story are explored in great detail without getting bogged in them.
the dad is a great character. the mc is basically 2 different persons living their own lives. they are quite distinct from each other.
big spoiler
the best character died so can't give 5 stars for the story when it comes to characters.
the style is good with the chapters that are a different pov their own chapter. no pov switches in the same chapter. which makes it way easier to understand who you are reading about.
can find no fault with the english of this story.
how the powers work spoiler
there are 5 true worlds. each with their own big magic system.
and a lot of normal words. of which earth is one. and the other mc is on one as well. basically the same but with way less power on them or way less energy.
the person the mc dreams about (everyone on earth dreams about someone different, they can get the powers of who they dream about basically) has the powers of cultivation. so thats what the mc learns as well. (another power is power of law and basically lets them make sci fi tech, becoming robots sort of things)
the power system goes from 1 to 10 as far as we're aware. basically every level doubles your power. how you level up is for every system of power different. for the mc its cultivation. so basically 10 realms in cultivation terms. - never_gonna_give_you_upRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A mature story that delves deeply into human dynamics and presents the protagonist with complex choices. The main character proves to be both competent and willing to take risks—qualities that make him engaging and believable. I particularly appreciated the initial phase set on Earth, where he gave his all to improve himself, facing life's everyday challenges with determination.
At times, he comes across as needlessly stubborn, especially when—only in the end—he realizes he has been exploited by some of his coworkers. However, this leads him to reflect and understand what truly matters to him.
I’ve currently reached the final arc of Union Central, just before the departure for Tian. I sincerely hope the story doesn’t devolve into a mere progression of stats and waiting for them to increase. Instead, I hope for a return to Earth, where the protagonist can reconnect with his past and try to mend the situation left unresolved by Volithur—perhaps even confronting and punishing the Xian elite for their cruelty. - philphyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Very promising story with a very promising world build. The premise is nearly unique and follows interesting rules.
No deus Ex Machina nonsense so far and very robust progression.
This story is worth your time if you are interested in unique power progression and real live characters.
Characters have fleshed out flaws and seem very real for this.
