Mighty Shangrook's Troubleslayers

Description

Mighty Shangrook, the demon-dragon-demigod, has been contentedly living in isolation from the world for centuries, dabbling in magical research, taking very long naps, and breeding "fancy" kobolds the way an ordinary eccentric might breed goldfish (but with more alchemy).

When some adventurers find out about the alleged immortality-granting artifact and come looking for it, Mighty Shangrook loses amanyservants (and a lot of efforts at breeding unique features), and decides that Mighty Shangrook needs a force to counter troublemaking adventurers.

Despite the intermittent update schedule, thisisstill an active story!Empirical Gnollagehas to get most of my time because I've committed to a specific schedule for it, but I'm still working on this one, too!

(Also, I was not an art major for a reason, but I'll come up withsomethingto use as a cover image eventually).

This takes place in the same world asEmpirical Gnollageand at approximately the same time, but unlike the slow-burn continuous progression of Empirical Gnollage, Mighty Shangrook's Troubleslayers is meant to be a more episodic collection of quests that a rotating cast of Troubleslayers may be sent on. Aside from making sure I put out enough to meet the requirements for the Community Magazine contest for January 2024 (and ideally getting most or all of an actual Troubleslayer quest out before the contest ends) I'm not planning to force a specific release schedule, so the releases will be larger than the ones in Empirical Gnollage.

The tone will also be a bit sillier, with more slapstick fantasy-adventure violence and deaths (often of the same character, who Mighty Shangrook has various ways - with various problems - to return the loyal Troubleslayers to their missions.)

The stories of Mighty Shangrook's Troubleslayers and Empirical Gnollage are not entangled with each other and are not likely to intersect any time soon, but that's not to say they couldn'teventuallycross paths.

The central twist—that the "demonic power" is a fastidious, bored dragon whose "artifact" is a hobby-project toy, and whose kobolds are a meticulously bred collection of servitors—is fantastic. It completely subverts standard fantasy tropes in a way that is both hilarious and awe-inspiring. Mighty Shangrook is an incredible character creation.
The idea of kobolds having "metaphorical dragons" like city governments is inspired. It adds a layer of depth and sociology that is rarely seen for these typically one-note creatures. Squiggles' backstory is great and immediately makes him a relatable and sympathetic viewpoint character.
Compared to the richly developed world of the kobolds, Breanna and her party feel a bit generic. They are standard-issue fantasy adventurers. While this might be intentional to highlight their hubris, it makes it hard to feel deeply invested in her plight. Giving us one or two more specific, unique character traits for her before the action starts would make her fate more impactful.
The sequence after Breanna is captured, involving the gathering of the tribe, the vomiting kobold, and the initial interrogation, feels a tiny bit slow compared to the tight pacing of the beginning and the brilliant payoff at the end. Some of this could be tightened to maintain the relentless momentum.
