- A.N. TainterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A Unique take on VR that hits the note for both fans of VR and Sci-Fi LitRPG. Metaverse Mythhunter quickly orients the reader into the world of The Collective and Magpie's story. The system setup here is unique and something that I haven’t seen before.
Magpie awakens as a volunteer to The Collective with no memory of who they are. Setup up with a generic body, they are tasked with riding The Collective of invasive entities.
The characters are quickly built up into people that you care about. I am especially loving Camel and Rook. The dynamic between Magpie (MC) as a rookie to The Collective and Camel the veteran who wastes his time drinking and smoking while in between fighting monsters is both nostalgic and clever.
The writing is really well done with little to no grammatical issues. There is good stylistic flow throughout the chapters I have read, and nothing reads clunky. The descriptions are on point and provide a clear picture of the world. There is also enough difference in sentence structure that I don’t have to catch myself skimming.
The setup has the vibe of an 80s detective show, and it blends perfectly with the Sci-fi setup. - Lucian T. EinarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Metaverse Mythhunter presents a unique and engaging take on the VR and LitRPG genres, blending elements of mystery, action, and humor to keep readers on the edge of their seats. While the story shows promise, it has yet to fully realize its potential.
Style: The author's choice of a first-person viewpoint immerses readers in a captivating mystery. The writing is well-paced, with a seamless blend of action and exposition. Humor is skillfully interwoven into the narrative, creating a balanced tone. The introduction of LitRPG elements is commendable, with clear ties to the main character's resource acquisition. The story maintains tension and stakes, making death and failure meaningful.
Story: Metaverse Mythhunter successfully introduces LitRPG elements within a VR world, creating a compelling narrative. The uncertain consequences of failure add to the intrigue, leaving readers eager to uncover what happens next.
Grammar: The story exhibits strong grammar, with no major issues to detract from the reading experience.
Character: The main character is likable, although their personality and motivation could benefit from further exploration. As the story progresses, delving deeper into the character's quirks, humor, and identity could enhance the overall reading experience.
In summary, Metaverse Mythhunter is an enjoyable read, offering a unique blend of Sci-Fi and LitRPG elements. While the concept and execution are strong, there is untapped potential waiting to be explored as the story continues. Readers seeking an engaging Sci-Fi or VR narrative are likely to find satisfaction in the world of Metaverse Mythhunter. - Pablo_BruinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After reading a bit of Jules Kindred Blair's other work over the last few months, I've come to expect two things upon starting Metaverse Mythhunter and following the story throughout it's ascension onto Rising.
1) It would be an experimental exercise in formatting and structure, as is becoming Kindred's signature.
2) Those risks would be nestled within a tightly paced narrative with all the hallmarks of a familiar Progression Story to keep the reader from feeling too far out of their comfort zone.
A lot of people in the comments zero in on the fact that the MC's dialogue does not have quotations around them. Present tense is often utilized to serve as the MC's outer dialogue while inner thoughts are written in past tense. However, after getting up to speed with the story as a whole, I almost feel as if the dialogue itself is a misdirect for the larger storytelling device at play.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start with the premise.
Metaverse Mythhunter is a Cyberpunk Horror Progression about members of a simulation referred to as 'Volunteers' who are dropped into a world for a second life. Through details I won't spoil, this program is seemingly overrun by mythological creatures which serve as both a predatory threat as well as a resource for the most competent of hunters. Our Protagonist (As of this writing only going by nicknames given by other characters) is newbie volunteer with a default appearance, no memory of their past life, and thus no identity. They are tasked with the inclination to become a hunter and the story literally takes off from that moment.
A simple enough premise, but I feel as if that's kind of the hook. You really don't know anything beyond what The Protagonist observes. The Protagonist's dialogue aside, the world of the Volunteers also has their own lingo and parlance in which they communicate with one another. At first it would seem that the goal is for you to get used to it, but in reality you (and The Protagonist) are being cond - StarswornAdminRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was wildly impressed when I came across Metaverse Mythhunter, and after catching up I'm confident that this story is shaping up to be one of the staples of the genre.
Style - The author has chosen to write in a first-person viewpoint, and Nobody, our main character, is quickly wrapped up in a mystery that draws the reader to the edge of their seat. The sentences are well-paced, and the story blends action and exposition well. Humor is effortlessly blended in with otherwise serious sections of the story. I also really appreciate the way the LitRPG elements are brought in. They are tied to a specific resource that our main character can acquire, and the sheer number of things that they have to improve means we aren't getting OP any time soon.
Story - Speaking of LitRPG elements, even though we are in a VR world, the author has done a great job creating tension and stakes. The challenge with this type of writing is making death and failure mean something, and given some of the buggy messages our MC has received, it's unknown what would happen if they fail. That makes me want to keep reading even more!
Grammar - It's good, no major issues that I see.
Character - Our MC is likeable, even if we don't know much about them yet. I do think that this is the area I'd like to see expanded on the most as the story continues. I'm writing this review completely caught up with what's been posted so far, and I feel like muchof our character's motivation is "survive." That's not a bad thing, and it reads realistically. As the story progresses, I just want to see a little more personality and humor come out.
I have to say, this has been a really fun read so far. I'm excited for what is coming next, and for anybody looking for a good Sci-Fi or VR story, I can say with confidence that you'll enjoy reading Metaverse Mythhunter!
