As the story progressed, you saw how everything built up throughout the narrative. Irovoi makes no apologies for what he is and you get deep inside his head. He makes no apologies on behalf of his ideology. Every statement he makes and life he takes shows he believes it with every green glowing fiber of his being.
You can feel every injury described deep in your bones, especially the ones that involve bones. Metal, plant life, the vacuum of space. It all combines to let you visualize everything. Even when he goes overboard, it doesn't overstay it's welcome.
The exchange between the captive dragon and his captors shows much about both characters.
The flow from section to section is seamless. The breaks are placed just right.
Only main gripe I have is it's written in present tense. When the narration switches, it can be a little distracting. The support characters and ending could have used a little more fleshing out. But, otherwise, it's good stuff. I'm eager to see more of this universe unfold. - WuldenRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I went into this wondering if I was going to enjoy the present tense writing, and initially I was put off by it... however, the further I got into the story, the more it grew on me, the less I noticed it, and I was ultimately left with a very engaging grim dark fantasy story with a focus on a villain.
Ryles' writing style is strikingly clear, precise, and accessible. Their ability to convey ideas with such streamlined prose made this a pleasure to read.
This was also excellent to listen to, and has left me hoping to see more of your stuff Ryles.
