Community Rating
Description
Construct your town, amass your armies, and reclaim your legacy before your foes can.
This is no simulation. The cities you build, the battles you fight, and the creatures you manage are real. Should your town hall crumble, so too will your existence. There are no second chances, no respawns, and only the strong survive.
Outlast your opponents. Dominate the battlefield. Outsmart the best the universe has to offer and prove your worth before the universe itself. We will be watching!
Good luck, contenders. Or, perhaps... goodbye.

- ActionHero415Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love this book, so far into chapter 17. It’s not like anything I’ve read on here with its mixture of RTS and fantasy. There are fun characters, memorable moments already, and a Druid character that I just don’t trust!!!
So glad he is trying something new and it’s coming out so good so far!! Excited to see what happens to Alex and his band of rat men. - BitEater829Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This one totally had me hooked. I have fond memories of playing multi day AoE 2 games with my cousins and the opening chapter totally had me in full nostalgia mode.
Style gets 5 stars from me. I've read a few books in the city-building or civilization building vein before, but none of them really had the same RTS elements that really connected me to this one. in most others, the city-building feels like a secondary thing for the MC and party to do between their adventures. Here, it's the focus.
Story gets a 5 stars. things don't just come together for the MC. they made mistakes, and the stakes feel real as a result. I'm interested to keep reading, and this'll likely end up on my follow list.
Grammar Score is a 4.5 for me. everything was perfect as far as spelling and word choice, at least from where I'm sitting. the one reason it's not 5 is that for me a 5 star grammar score equates to learning a new word, which I haven't come across yet.
Characters gets a 4.5 from me. the characters are all introduced really well, and I'm excited to learn more about each of them. The only reason this didn't get a 5 star is because I felt there were two or three places that we could have had some character building or development that didn't happen, but honestly, that may just be me, because I really like well developed characters.
Overall I would say 5 stars. the areas where the story didn't score 5 are more due to tiny little personal issues, which I feel probably wont bother 99% of people. I very highly recommend giving this one a shot. - CrazyMage555Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0So I’ve read Matt’s other book series Whisper of Iron, which is very good. This one (7 chapters in) has the makings of an incredible story. I wanted to get my review in asap so more people can discover this thing.
Let me start with the niche he’s chosen. It’s an RTS mashup of AOE and Civilization, sprinkled with races that aren’t human as the populous like Warhammer. All in a death match scenario where the winner doesn’t get obliterated and everyone else does in a game run by a higher being. Wow.
RTS games can be tedious and long and sag in end game, so I’m hoping and praying that this book doesn’t. So far, the mayor is hilarious, I love the random RTS eggs sprinkled in, and the rat people are going to be awesome. There’s even a rats and sinking ship pun in here.
Grammer is good as always. He edits his chapters well with minor things here and there. Characters are yet to develop but I’m only at the start.
All in all give this story a shot. I think it’s going to be something special and I’m here for it. Thanks Mr Pivots and good luck! - Justin MarksRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story flows well and it's a cool concept with a Might and Magic feel. I'm curious to see how he keeps the story moving. The side characters are cool and I am curious to see what's going on with the world he left behind. Not sure how much more there is to see in the world but curious about the wrap up.
- WeavervaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Grammar 5/5. There are no issues. This has obviously been worked on extensively.
Style 5/5. This has the generally accepted past tense, but first person pov. One of the things I look for in the first person instead they're using all the senses. In the beginning. It's very clear that he's using all the senses to describe the world. Otherwise things would be a little stale, innit?
Story 5/5- We get the stakes early. We understand the stakes. We see the MC act on terrible information delivered in a class way. It's actually pretty great in how the author conveys a bit of the lore in just how the old mayor approaches things. I like that in particular. I think that it shows a bit of what is in store as well.
Characters 5/5- I'm sold on the characters honestly. Rats? Heck yes. A terrible situation? Death on the line? Understood.
This gets my highest recommended which is to say that I'm going to go buy all of the authors audiobooks and listen to them. Basically everything here is great overall and it's my humor.
So what are you waiting for? Go and read it! I promise that it's good. - PawnsRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Well, I didn't play Age of Empires at all yet this story seems like it mimics your average civilization building like Tensura or I have a shazhai in being your hoarding expanding and conquering style.
Just like "I have a shanzhai: the MC gets isekaied to a sorry excuse of a town called Stonebridge, then it grows you into multiple races' wars using the survival of the fittest as a basic mindset.
As for style, it is engaging to say the least, and really easy to follow and understand. Grammer is good and I didn't encounter any mistakes in my reading.
Overall is is probably the best novel to recommend for a person starting to read the real-time strategy genre.
