- Jordan Elias R.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really interesting start, the concept of this book is both strange and intriguing, following the tale of Zade— a mage, and Yue, a warrior in this high fantasy featuring a high stake adventure a d a looming war.
Style: The story is fast paced and direct, but more importantly, it's very easy to read. The world building is a little slow, but the strongest point of the story is how descriptive it is.
The constant switch in perspective affects immersion though, but can be a treat for those who love multiple POVs.
Story: the story follows two protagonist, Yue and Zade, one a warrior and the other a mage. One who is trying to make a name for herself, and the other who's simply trying to run away from the trauma of his recent past.
The concept of the story is quite interesting, and it is obvious that the author has a firm grasp on the direction of the story, and has established it with intrigue and action right from the start.
Grammar: I'm not one to be picky with Grammer, but the book could do with an extra round of editing and proofreading.
Character: Both main characters are very well rounded, but the side characters feel flat which affects their dialogues too.
Overall, the story is an interesting one that I've been following for a while now. Ps: Jade is surprisingly my favorite character yet, followed by Yue, Zade is a little off, but I'm hoping to get to know him better soon. - ShirimeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You don't always get stories that feel like this on Royal Road, so I appreciate that it exists. It's a well-written story with some interesting worldbuilding and the promise of an impending war that we see glimpses of (presumably) in the first chapter.
Style: The worldbuilding is where this story shines. There's so much to unpack, and the author thankfully doesn't use exposition dumps or giant walls of text to deliver it. Instead, they relay most necessary exposition through dialogue. This is both a gift and a curse, though, because there is a lot of dialogue. While I normally don't mind, and sometimes an abundance of dialogue might be necessary to a scene, it borders on Talking Head Syndrome in this story. I'd prefer a few paragraphs describing what's happening and what might be happening in a less important conversation. Am I asking for a few exposition dumps? I have no idea.
Story: Like I mentioned before, this is a story about an impending war as seen in the dreams of Zade and (seemingly) kicking off in the story of Yue. The appeal of stories with multiple MCs is the dramatic irony that comes from us being able to see the narrative throughline that connects every MC. Knowing that Yue is (likely) being affected by the same war that will upend Zade suggests that they're going to meet someday and the built-up dramatic irony will make that meeting extremely satisfying. I look forward to seeing how the author pulls it off.
Grammar: It's fine. Nothing egregious that pulls you out of the story.
Character: This was for a Review Swap, so it's too early for me to make a specific judgment on either of the leads or the sides. They both seem like the ideal characters for their own parts in the story, and they seem to have depth to them beyond their basic roles. I'd like to go more in depth, but I've only read up to the fourth chapter.
Overall, I think you'll enjoy this story if you like trad pub/old-school fantasy novels. It reads like one and I imagine it'll give you the sa - Lucian T. EinarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: "Mage War" by FireinBlood presents a traditional fantasy adventure that mixes tragedy, slice-of-life elements, and a brewing mages' civil war. The story follows the journeys of Zade, a mage, and Yue, a warrior, as they navigate personal struggles amidst a world teeming with secrets and challenges.
Style: The writing style of "Mage War" combines first-person and third-person perspectives. While the perspective shifts may be slightly jarring at times, they do not detract from the engaging storytelling. The world-building is vivid, with details slowly unfolding to captivate the audience's imagination. However, I would rather stick to one type of perspective.
Story: The narrative of "Mage War" unfolds in a world rich with history, featuring a mage war on the horizon, a mysterious cult, and murder mysteries. The story's pacing is well-maintained, keeping readers invested in the characters' journeys. The blend of tragedy and triumph adds depth to the plot, promising a compelling reading experience as the pieces of the story come together.
Grammar: The grammar in "Mage War" is commendable, with minor instances of perspective changes that could benefit from refinement. Overall, the descriptive language and narrative flow seamlessly, enhancing the readability of the story.
Character: The characters in "Mage War," particularly Zade and Yue, are well-developed, realistic, and engaging. Each character embodies unique strengths and flaws, drawing readers into their personal growth and challenges. While some secondary characters may lack depth, the focal characters shine through with their complexities and relatable struggles.
In conclusion, "Mage War" presents a captivating fantasy adventure that balances world-building, character development, and an impending war with finesse. Readers seeking a blend of traditional fantasy elements and modern storytelling will find this tale both entertaining and immersive. - d.c.brums23564Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great start so far, very dialogue driven in the style which is always welcome. Though it is hard to tell who is talking at certain points, but that could just be me. It's hard to balance descriptions with dialogue, and it being dialogue heavy leaves a reader wanting more description of the surrounding world. But that's just my opinion. I really want to see where this goes and how Yue and Zade interact in the future. The shift in perspective in the third chapter is a great way to get into more character's points of view and see the world from their side. I'm wondering if Jade will get the same treatment? When there are a good number more chapters I'll come back and do an advanced review of the story.
- wasteawarRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5While first-person narratives aren’t really my thing, I still found myself enjoying the story for what it is. Fortunately, we start off in the thick of things, with our main protagonist, Zade, thrust into a new life as a mage with a call to arms tantalizingly close. As the meat of the starting chapters are viewed from Zade’s perspective, we are given a glimpse into the world around him and his mind. However, I feel that this comes at the cost of visualizing the world around him, but it is early days yet.
As for Yue, our secondary main character, and I say secondary as she is viewed from the third person, she is given a more active role to begin with, as a warrior. Without spoiling too much, her call to arms happens much swifter than Zade’s. Conspiracy serving a foil to a warrior’s might.
As a dialogue heavy novel, I found myself at a few points getting lost in just who was talking at times. Something some simple editing could solve, so no real negatives for that. Something that did bother me was the repetitive starting of sentences, particularly when it came to Yue. i.e. She did this. She did that. She took this. Zade had some of the same with. I did this, and I did that, style, but it felt less egregious from the first person perspective. If you can overlook such, then it’s not much of an issue, just something for the Author to think about.
All in all, a good novel that I’m looking forward to reading as the chapters come out! - GD_CruzRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Zade is a mage — Yue is a warrior... So far, that's it, and it's still very interesting!
Each chapter that's out so far clocks out at a whopping 4k+ word count, and there's a lot stuffed in there so let's get down to the nitty-gritty of this high fantasy tale that's equal parts a tour of a vast new world and the opening salvo for a high stakes adventure that may or may not feature a god of death—and y'all know one of those death gods are always exciting.
'No Spoilers'
Story: four chapters might not be enough to dive into it, but there's a lot of content in those four chapters.
For Zade, it's the story of his journey to a place that will help him escape the horrors of his recent past—and Lord knows we all need a place like that—but it's also a chance for him to find redemption for what he's done. He's got one friend, and she's a precious gem of a character I hope sticks around, while everything else feels new to him. As a new mage, I worry that he might be rushing headlong into danger, especially because he's had a premonition or two that spells that out for him.
Meanwhile, Yue's the vanguard trainee who's out to make a name for herself. She's the typical female protagonist we all read about in YA novels, so that's already a plus for her, but she's also daring enough not to be one of those YA protagonists we all hate on. Yue's journey isn't as clear cut and dry as Zade's is—we're not sure she has trauma like he has—but the tournament she's in at this part of the novel is pretty interesting.
There's no war yet, but since the title's called 'Mage War' then we can expect it to happen sooner rather than later.
Style: There's a major shift between first and third-person perspective narration that follows the switch from one protagonist to the other, and although a little jarring, it's also applied well enough that it doesn't take away from the story. Zade's emotions, thoughts, and motivations are all clearly written in the prose, which is the strength of a first-person PO - SanteeeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I just started this book, and let me tell you, it's a certified page-turner! From the moment you start reading, you're hooked – the story grabs you right away, and you can't wait to see what happens next.
The best part? There's non-stop action! No boring bits or filler, just pure excitement from start to finish. It's like being on a crazy rollercoaster ride.
And speaking of magic, this book has it in spades! The author really knows how to bring the magical world to life. But it's not just about the magic; the whole world is incredibly detailed and immersive. You'll feel like you're right there living the scenario yourself.
When it comes to the characters! They're well-written, a little one-dimensional at the start but they'll grow on you the further you read into the story!
Basically, it's the book you want to read if you need a story that will utterly consume you for days or even weeks on end. It's the kind of book that you'll struggle to put down, even when it's way past your bedtime. You'll be sneaking in a few more pages whenever you can, desperate to uncover what happens next in this book!
Although the book might be a little jarring at the beginning, trust me, and get through the first few chapters, you'll find the story of the year.
My two cents on the book ... - Sphynx_99Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5First of all, personally the genre of the story is usually not something I would go for but this was a nice change of pace.
Grammar: I honestly don't dare say anything about it, so just 5 stars. Looks good to me haha
Style: Sometimes the story lacks some description of the world surrounding the characters, which makes it sounds flat. However, this can also be a preference of mine.
Character:
Zade has the classic tragic back story trope, which is cliché but well-wrriten. However, in chapter 1 I found Zade's memory of the Awakening a bit jarring? And for someone who just killed their own parents, it's again a bit flat.
Other dialogue between the characters are nicely written, well done!
Story: I like this story and I'd recommend it for someone who doesn't mind the descriptive fights and some the blood. Well done Author! - WriterLeroy01Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Ive read quite a bit of Fantasy Fiction, so I'll be using that as a frame of reference for reviewing this in a few separate aspects.
Story: So far, after reading what felt like 10k word, the stories pretty simple, a lot of character interactions, and back and forth. It feels like it's really building towards something.
Writing: The Writing so far seems really tight, its formatted well. And keeps it nice and clean.
Style: The style of writing is really good because it doesnt use a lot of filler words like "She said" "They Said" over and over, and just lets the dialogue keep going/
Grammar: No real Grammar issues, so nothing really to say.
Overall: Over all, really great start to a narrative! As a fan of Fantasy and this type of writing, you've accomplished it really well, and in an easily digestible way instead of the typical Fantasy Novel huge paragraphs for everything in the world!
4/5 - EddieMRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The story has a good premise but the MC is completely unrelateable. I gets irate about his attractive friend, who is a girl and his age, being assumed as his girlfriend and he completely disrespects vastly more powerful instructors without explanation of why he would be this way or why they would allow it. The story feels forced and clunky. My hope is that the author goes back and fixes this in an edit. I would really like to read the fixed story. Good luck to the author.
