Lucid Core
Community Rating
Description
Lucid dreaming is something that happens very rarely. Some people may never experience it in their entire lives. But for Lucid, it's a nightly occurrence. He plays around in his dreams, stretching his will over everything with the finest of controls. Manipulating his very environment has become second nature to him. So when he becomes a dungeon core without his knowing, he slides into the position comfortably.
Abby and Owyn are adventurers! Abby desires all the thrills that adventures bring, and Owyn is obsessed with dungeons. While they may not have much now, they're almost ready to finish their preparations. One more month, and they'll have saved enough to move to the big city and take on arealdungeon! That is, until a mysterious dungeon appears on the outskirts of their quiet town.
All this action garners the attention of people far more powerful than Setterton had ever encountered before. Tension builds, mysteries become discovered, and everyone discovers who they really are once the temptation of power forces both sides into a conflict that neither can avoid.
Updates Monday-Wednesday-Friday. I'm writing this with the intentions of learning how I might be able to become a better writer, so suggestions, advice and criticisms will always be welcome!

- KokishortailRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Very good novel, the premise is interesting, characters are great, story is engaging and interesting, the switching perspectives are done amazing and don't leave you confused, characters are rather memorable so I don't find myself forgetting them, all together a great novel, I would say more but I'm bad at making reviews but personally I think this is a 10/10 good book.
- jnobodyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Absolutely confused on the review that read the whole book and thinks the MC believes they're dreaming. They figure it out like very early on and its seems to very much be how the Mc copes with the situation they find themselves in. I really enjoy the story this weaved, it made me cry a few times with some genuinely touching scenes and its just a really fun Dungeon Core story, ethics smethics.
For the genre No lit-rpg elements, and dungeon cores are universally hated/destroyed/farmed.
Which normally I prefer storys that are more peaceful and 'numbers go up' but this one is really fun to read Im glad I found it, thank you. - MFooteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was a really fun read. I loved the story. I mainly read books for the story, and if I like the story, I will ignore bad grammer and spelling as long as it gets the story across. I did not have to do that with this story, it was well written. I especially appreciated that there was an epilogue summarizing where the story went afterwards.
- McBill24601Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I discovered the dungeon core genre about 2 to 3 months ago and I have become absolutely obsessed with it. In all of this time I have not been able to find a good finished dungeon core book that is still free to read. Until now. Not only does the story have a solid plot line and compelling characters but the ending is strong. This book is long enough to be satisfying and it does not overstay it’s welcome. On top of that it feels like there could be hundreds of more stories in this universe.
- N. A. MasonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Eclectic introductory chapter, can put some people off but perfectly reasonable in terms of introducing the main character and why he thinks the way he does. There's a shift in perspective for the Abby and Owyn chapters, which I personally think is a positive, it fits with the content of the chapters and helps differentiate them from the Lucid chapters. I know some people find point of view shifts, especially early in a story, to be a negative but I think that so far the switches in perspective are well paced and not jarring. The world-building around dungeon cores and how people interact with them is interesting and sufficiently different to other Dungeon Core stories I've been reading recently to feel distinct and fresh, at least to me.
The story is obviously only in it's early stages here but it's enough that I'm interested to see where it goes. - MinlettRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This book isn't written badly, the characters are reasonable, justifiable and logical in their own ways. The main character Lucid has created a persona and is treating everything the way he has trained himself to deal with the strange. Like it's without consequences, and all under his whim. The locals are treating everything in the way they've been trained as well; an extremely dangerous, deadly, and odd creature has appeared. Hence the conflict, which Lucid wants.
I can't recommend this book. I can't even judge it without bias, so I'm sticking it at 4 stars, weather it's better or worse, I can't say. Evil characters makes me feel physically sick, and while Lucid isn't an evil person, he definitely is an evil character. He's the embodiment of uncaring selfishness. If something happens to anyone, who cares? He can't even be bothered to figure out how to listen to those he's enslaved. - Doctor_ChitinRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The story starts off pretty interesting. The main character is getting chased by werewolf pirates. Then they're kissing a girl, while watching some other girls in swimsuits. The wild scene change and odd behavior make sense, because the character is lucid dreaming. Safe in the confines of their own mind, they can do whatever they want without worrying too much about the danger or moral implications of their actions.
This changes when the character starts dreaming about being a dungeon core, and realizes it isn't a dream, they don't have unlimited power, and they can't wake up. Trapped as a rock that monsters want to eat, and people want to smash to make magical jewelry, the main character's reaction is one of... mild bemusement.
From there the main character names themselves Lucid, tells the nearby villagers he wants peace, brainwashes someone's mother into a willing slave, and murders a bunch of strangers trying to give him a peace offering (which they have good reason to think he'd want), because he's getting bored, and thinks starting a fight with the stranger's organization would make for good drama.
Scorewise the grammar is great, and the premise and setting are interesting. I found myself interested in the world, and how the people, monsters, and dungeons in it interact with each other.
The style and story are decent. The humans are believable, and the author uses interactions instead of walls of stats and bonuses, to drive the plot. Occasionally, Lucid has a tendency to succeed a little too easily and consistently at everything he tries to accomplish.
For me, the main character is the weakest part of the story. At chapter 18, I still don't know what Lucid's motivations are beyond "being entertained". Murder, brainwashing, and sending loyal minions to their death barely seem to bother him. He claims to want peace with the villagers so they won't try to kill him, but he's never seemed especially concerned about how close he's come to dying, and has just killed - RedPineRoyal Road★★★ 3.0In terms of writing, this was great. Well above average in term of story, compared to stories in general.
For ethics, this story is far more ethical than the average dungeon core story. Sadly, the average is so low that this is insufficient for me to enjoy a story.
No matter how well intentioned, accidental, well thought out, or contrived the circumstance, the theme of repeatedly denying pleas for mercy does not sit right with me. I fully respect the author, and his protagonist, but there are some things that are simply unpleasent to watch.
YMMV. I am fully aware that I have unusually high standards. - q25tRoyal Road★★ 2.0We're given some background to the MC having lucid dreams justifying his carefree attitude at first but after literal days and people trying to either enslave or kill you, you'd think some caution or circumspection might be in order. Nope!
There have also been several interesting turns that encounters have taken which the MC simply ignored without comment.
MC is a suicidal, homicidal sociopath. The fact he hasn't died yet is due strictly to plot armor and it's chapter 12.
