Description

On their first FTL Flight, the crew of the Sol United Enterprise immediately discovers proof of alien life.Humanity, pondering the question of the Fermi Paradox is given an answer it never expected when two entirely different paths finally cross. In a Galaxy where no race achieves space flight without the aid of psionics, just how do Humans factor in? And why are the aliens so scared of them? It's the Humans who are prisoners!Note: Multi-pov, slow burn sci-fi. I have to make new rules for unexplored ideas. That takes time. Aspects of hfy as well, although this story not about the ways in which humans are strong, it's about the ways they are different. That being said, while this story is more complex than the usual fare, I'm very proud of it. I hope you enjoy.

Lonely Souls has quickly become one of my favorite stories that I've read. The characters are wonderfuly fleshed out, with full range of motivation and histories that are fleshed out as the story goes on.
The way the aliens psychic abilities shape not only their technology, but their whole basis for interaction makes for an engrossing story. Honestly I had a hard time stopping myself inbetween chapters!
You should definitely pick this up if you are interested in a story with:
    first contact gone strange,
    wonderful character interactions,
people kicking and scraping to cross communication barriers,
    coonoodles (the best part),
and some very creative psychicspace combat!

So good! Such an interesting concept, well written, engaging and different. Loving this story! No problems with spelling or grammar, and the cast of characters are each unique, different and generally fleshed out. It's a bit of humanity fuck yeah, but we're not completely OP. The other species have their own abilities and can challenge humanity. I enjoy the depiction of the adversaries, they're definitely enemy the reader can engage with.

I am immensely pleased to see this story resurface, its earlier incarnation from a few years back was a delight, despite being unfinished at the time. And I am happy to report that this version is even better than before!
It's one of my favorite sci-fi series, as it blends a multitude of very unique ideas into a thrilling adventure set in a believable yet extremely fantastical sci-fi universe. The hyper-advanced humans feel human, the psionic aliens feel alien, and all the whole dramatic sequences of events feel like the natural outcome of all of the different elements smashing together in the central conflict.
Pro-tips: coonoodle cute stats are OP plz nerf, and moth girls best girls

So I don’t actually know what the style score is actually supposed to represent but, Damn is this story a good read
As for the story score, this story is so well put together you can get a feeling of the Universe the story is placed in and all the moving things in the background without ever needing a World building info dump. It’s just so seamless.
For the grammar score I haven’t found a single grammatical mistake and all the sentences flow together nicely. The grammar is perfect.
For the character score, With the constantly shifting perspectives of the characters we get to view the world from all of their eyes and get an understanding of how they see the world, This especially helps with the alien perspectives and understanding of the universe through the eyes of the many. Another thing this helps with is understanding the personalities of the characters and the histories of those characters that are reflected in how they approach situations. This builds deep emotional and understandable characters through the view of others and themselves.
    The story is just awesome!

This is an excellent Sci-Fi novel. First contact space opera with a fascinating twist or two. I think the idea behind it is brilliant, and the execution is highly skilled. I am delighted to see a novel of this calibre on RRL.
Style: the style is multi-viewpoint (well labelled) and this is necessary to give the full complexity of each characters attitude. In multi-species SF it is much better to use this technique as you cannot assume a “species standard” attitude to “facts”. That problem means that the “third person” writing technique so common in “single species” writing would fail to capture the full complexity of the authors vision. Multiple first person writing is commonly used in SF to allow authors to explore the variation in the mental/cognitive “space” across a variety of species where a mere “external observer” POV would utterly fail. I understand one previous reviewer complained about this - clearly they know relatively little about SF writing. It’s a different genre folks! And more complex to write than the type of isekai junk that’s mostly in here.
Story: well it’s space opera, it’s first contact, with military SF elements too - and it’s a brilliant twist in these sub genres in SF. I don’t want to put in spoilers for the specific plot elements. There is a current main plot arc but hints of much deeper and complex  arcs ahead. So space opera, but with a significant “quasi-mystical” feel to it given the nature of the aliens and the evident potential for symnootic interaction with humans.
Grammar: seems excellent to me, although being a native speaker I am not very persnickety as long as the story flows well and immersion is maintained.
Characters: There are already a variety of major characters across three separate species (not including the cute alien pets - Sunny = ❤️). Currently 2+ main humans, three main allied aliens, three to four main “hostile” aliens (more than one species in this group), all of these have been given well developed characters. The

An interesting space opera from both human and alien point of view, who don't understand how a race can't have a telepatic talent.
The word building is very thorough, there aren't plot hole and every alien race is very realistic with their strory, their own nature and inclination.
The thing that can be better are three: in the firsts chapter there are moment too slow, if the strory was not so fantastic I would have dropped it; the second thing is that when the human are prisone they are too put, maybe some anger monologue would give a more lively effect; the last is the lack of backstory of why humanty did space exploration but maybe will be explained in the future.
In conclusion this is a fantastic and coherent story, a little too slow in the firsts chapter, but overall very interesting.
the spoiler is only because I need 200 word

This story really checks off a lot of the best parts of a story. The characters are distinct and have solid personalities, each of who have their own trauma, personality flaws, social hangups, traits, and skills, even the non-humans. The worldbuilding is solid enough to understand what's going on outside the immediate presence of the current perspective character, but vague enough to not have walls of text descriptions of every detail. The technology and interactions with "how the world works" both within known and story-presented physics works together well enough to keep things realistic without requiring constant "psionic stuff happens here" handwaving.
The story has a completely unique presentation of a non-humanoid species, that approach society and technology from a new perspective wholly unlike humanity, while still being able to have a select few alien characters able to bridge the gap and interact with humans, and form relationships/rivalries without making things weird, and without setting up antagonists just to be punching bags or targets.
The non-human species have their own perspective sections in each chapter, and are presented well enough to make each their own main character in their own right, even the antagonists. The story perspective focuses around Seth and Eless, but the other characters get almost as much screen time.
One primary criticism I have is that there are occasional grammar errors, usually 5-10 per chapter, but almost always simple typos that should have been caught by basic spellcheck, and rarely bad enough to throw off sentence structure enough to matter.

This is a good story, but not an easy story to start. Some of this is just quirks of the writing style - the story jumps perspectives sometimes when it shouldn't. This compounds the somewhat clinical tone at times of the narrative, making it hard to get into anyone's head. And it's further compounded by the narrative wanting to both have a good amount of setup before starting and wanted to avoid spoiling things the character would find out in-text.
Together, they left the story in a state where it doesn't really start until chapter six.
From there, the action rises fast and you start getting to know the characters, and they start doing things. At that point, it goes from a slog to quite a good story. I'll admit I nearly dropped this twice before that point, and pretty much slogged through mainly because I was tired but couldn't sleep. After that point, I blitzed through the rest of book one in one sitting.
So I would say that if you have the time, it's worthwhile to invest it. But it is a hard story to get into, and for that, I'm dinging it half a star.

A scifi story on RR, whoohoo, a fun space swashbuckling story with improbable what ifs.
Not a bad swing at the road not travelled when humanity meets the first other space travellers.
A familiar writer from HFY with a more polished version of an earlier idea, no harems so far.

This is a story that I think has a lot of potential, and has done some both smart and really interesting things. The effects of psychic abilities and means, and how that has overall affected the growth of various alien species makes a lot of sense and is fun to read. How humanity is perceived, and the reaction of those subjected to us is also really amusing.
But, I find the story suffers a lot from constant shifts in whose perspective we're following. It's a strong story, but spread too thin. Too often the story will begin building momentum, then switch perspectives and have it all sputter out to a standstill. It makes the pacing feel worse than it really is, and the momentum doesn't always build back to where it was, which makes some events feel more lackluster than they otherwise would.
Beyond that issue, I don't think there's much bad to be said about it. The plot is heading in a good direction, there are few issues with grammar, the characters are all written well. It's all quite good. I look forward to future chapters.
