- IanFlatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This starts with a nice introduction to Pras, and his world--semi-floating city, kue lupis--before a change, in the form of Eggi, appears. Sometimes I think those sort of 'introductory' chapters fall a little flat, but here the dialogue is smooth, the language is strong, and I was happy to be grounded in Pras's world.
The 'voice from his past' is dropped in with a nice, casual mention. And I am always Team Lazy Cat!
I love the Indonesian references and names.
This reads a bit slow, but in a way that I really enjoyed. Probably because the author has a good ear. Or maybe not 'slow,' maybe just 'unrushed.' There isn't a lot of propulsive plotting, or stakes--yet--but the writing is sure-footed enough that I found this more relaxing than frustrating. There's no real momentum yet but … I very much enjoyed it. - KnightravenessRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This was my first forway into VRMMORPG story, and I feel it was a good one to start with. The gaming world within is pretty intuitive with what you would expect, with just the right amount of "rules" and "ability" explanations. I was able to get the in-game feel without feeling bogged down in it, or feeling that the author was more interested in designing a game than telling a story.
As for the story itself, there is a decent delivery of development both in-game and "in RL". There is clearly a character history to be further discovered, and and grander game yet to be explored. Five chapters in, there are a few arc avenues with potential; such as learning more about the betrayal in Pras/Trier's past, the implied drama with Mana, and the friendship building that yet awaits with Eggi, or Zachks (and those are just the ones I've met so far). As it's been indicated that "hunters never hunt alone", I imagine friendship bonds that occurs post-betrayal/traumatized past to play a part in the Main Character's development.
Stylistically, there are few grammar and sentence structure things that could make the experience a little smoother, but over all the story is readable. And with a vivid imagination, those things could be overlooked.
I could stand to know a little more about Pras, but I suspect the mystery of Pras's past and "real life" is a plot device to keep readers wanting to learn more. It wars with Pras's non-committal attitude, but again, at the stage to where I have read, I imagine it could be setting the character development for contrast should Pras eventually find himself more invested in the fate of himself and his friends. It would be a rewarding redemption and development, and the table has been set for satisfaction later, should things play out that way.
