- time for a napRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story - 5/5
A familiar concept, done well. The premise of a monster deciding to walk the path usually reserved for the traditionally civilized races is hardly unique, and as far as I've read there isn't much to differentiate this story's tower-style dungeons from those in myriad other fictions (and we've learned little of the world outside). But the plot is tight and coherent, and there are hints of an intriguing broader context.
Character - 5/5
For me, the character development of Owin (the MC) is where this story really shines. It does an excellent job of portraying someone with no life experience, and no knowledge of the world beyond the contents of a language infodump. In my experience, most authors who attempt to convey something similar end up with a character who is generally too perceptive and insightful, making inferences and choices that should require knowledge that they should not have while adapting to the world far too quickly; and, at plot-convenient junctures, overly oblivious. So far, I have found Legend much more believable in this respect. Owin is naïve and makes many poor choices, but he learns quickly when given the opportunity. (Though, given just how much he has yet to learn, I expect that his blunders will continue for quite some time.) His actions are sometimes inconsistent – but in a way that makes sense, since he's struggling to understand the world, his place in it, and himself.
Most of the heroes we've met thus far are given just enough screen-time to suggest their motivations. (And I'm not going to give any spoilers in regards to recurring characters.)
Style - 5/5
Simple and straightforward. It's the sort of writing style that gets the point across, while staying out of the way to let the story and characters shine through.
Grammar - 5/5
I'm "reading" this via a screen reader, so I can't speak to punctuation and whatnot, but I've noticed very few issues. - Egag99Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story does a good job setting up the world during the first book. Then the second book introduces the supporting cast and starts setting up the connections the MC makes. And then you get to the third book which does and excellent job of showing how much our awakened goblin has grown as a person and warrior. This is one of my favorite stories that I have read.
- AlfenhaftRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I normally do not bother with writing a review for the stories that I like. Too many and too muc bother seeing the minimum amount of words needed.
I find myself really enjoying this story. Well written, a bit quirky and a new approach to some well known and well worn tropes: tower ascend and goblin hero. Still this is a new way and to me very enjoyable to read. I might rate this as high as I Shall Seal the Heavens or Coiled Dragon for quality of story and consistency.
Silly enough, i would rate this story a must read. Keep it up! - Moon_WinchesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I added this story to my library a long time ago, but never read it. Something about the cover turned me off of it. But it wasn’t until a couple days ago when I finished getting up-to-date and all my other books that I saw this story again. And when I opened it up and looked at the covers for each individual book. I instantly knew that this was a story the author loved. Yes I am a piece of shit who judges a book by its cover. More often than not this works out. Usually, I subscribe to a book and it has a bad cover, but months later after a long time of development. When the author finally gets a brand new cover for it, I can tell the book as well to read. and oh was I proven right. I deeply love this story so far I believe it is perfectly capturing the identity of a being that instantly gained sentence in one of the worst scenarios possible. I love the story and the journey of Owen so far and the people he meets along the way. I don’t feel like the background characters are too dimensional. I actually feel like everybody has depth. Now a lot of the chapters can feel simple to read, but I also believe that’s because of everyone’s interactions with each other. A lot of the people are more straightforward, not feeling a need to lie. The author also leaves in cute fun little interactions between everybody. So far I’m very excited to see where the story goes since I can feel so many more books for the future. I just hope to get more of Suta. He is the best little boy and the funniest familiar. Other than shade who is just fucking annoying. Not annoying like I don’t like him, but annoying because the author has done the perfect job to make him annoying.
- TheBotRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like the story, it's not to numbers heavy and its as the title says, mostly focused on his progression in the towers. Throughout the 3 and 1/2 books I've read he has grown as a character which is one of if not the most important parts of writing a story like this and for him its nearly always brought on by the people he trusts the most.
IDK how to write reviews I just wanted to give this five stars because I like it.
Also I absolutely adore the humour of the Shadow Narcissist and the Brainless kinda Narcissist. - Eager4MeadRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0It is a well thought out story. Eventually I just had to stop. It is sad but truly 1 character ruined the series for me. It started out with just skipping parts but it finally became to much for me. If you can handle mind numbing word vomit (from 1 character) then this is an excellent book for you
- Jojo_kiwiRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The story is fun and it feels like the idea is there, but the characters come across as 2 dimensional at times. The dialogue doesn’t ever get more complex and feels forced. Some of the humor has the inklings of good banter but once again feels a bit hollow. Not a bad story but more like a getting a cucumber sandwich for lunch. It’s food, but it’s not filling. That being said, I enjoy the story so far and the world building is interesting and with a little polish I think this story could be incredible. Now there are no significant grammar errors and the story reads fine if a bit simple. I do feel like certain characters are easier to enjoy than others but it does feel like the main character is swinging wildly from “it’s my first week alive” to “I am a fully developed person with strongly held beliefs that cannot be swayed”. Additionally, as much as I enjoy the 7 dungeons and a lot of the world building that has been done it does feel like the trekking through the dungeons feels like walk->fight->walk->fight->exposition. There is no sense of scale of time and all that the characters should be doing to survive for days in a dungeon. They get out at the end of several dungeons and they just “get a feeling it’s been a few days”. Where is that conclusion coming from? They state the time feels different in the dungeon so how are you able to tell? Even a “we had to walk around for days” as time movement would be something. That’s just more of the problem I feel hits this story fairly hard which is it feels like it’s speeding through its own story. My favorite chapters were Potillas journey of protecting and moving through the city as it doesn’t feel like she’s trying to speedrun her own life.
overall the story is fun but I can’t really keep reading as I feel I enjoy the story more than the story does.
