Years ago, in a world where magic thrived, one mage stood above the rest. Reuben Carnage, self-proclaimed magic scholar, delved into the mystic powers, and brought himself to near immortality. Then, the heroes of old put him down. The reason for this is unknown, but his tomes can still be found in the wreckage of his fortress, The Crater of Carnage.

- KythereaRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I know this is on hiatus and hasn't been updated in some time, but I wanted to offer a review because it caught my eye, and I believe supporting and encouraging authors even in regards to work they've moved on from is worthwhile - if nothing else, to validate their effort and skills and to motivate them for whatever projects they may now be working on instead. :)
I like how easy and familiar the register of this piece is. There's a nice balance of comedy and sobriety in the narration; the opening is just mysterious enough to draw the reader in and keep them interested without leaving them lost. I'm a fan of the visuals and the evocative language choices. I do feel the writing style has room to develop a more unique voice - though then again, keeping it simple makes it very accessible and provides a good canvas for the plot itself.
Since this work was left off pretty early on, I shan't speculate about where it might have led, but it certainly hints at a variety of exciting possibilities. If it were to continue I'd love to get more immersion into the world - a sense for the flavor of the setting, the quirks, what sets it apart and makes it so fantastical (since "fantastical" is the feeling I get from it so far!).
