- Aleth08Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story:
The premise works with a simple enough concept--survival. The action right from the start grips you and throws you into the thrill of survival. The desperation and conflicting emotions of Mc really shone a lot in the first chapter. And the grimdark tone worked really well with the new world, hunt, survive, litrpg setting in my opinion.
Style:
The book has a simple and straightforward style of storytelling. It focuses more on the action and getting the story across to the readers than getting lost into the verbose flowery pieces of prose. One thing I would suggest the author to work on though would be the perspective. There were cases of head hopping, but still, nothing major so not enough to deduct any point from the category.
Grammar:
Noticed no major issues, maybe some punctuation errors here and there that can easily be fixed with a round of proofreading. The words were written well, and they delivered the story to the readers, job well done.
Character:
Though its too early to judge anything on the matter of character exploration and growth, as it takes chunks of a book to really dive into, the beginning of the character's story showed a lot of promise. Mc's inner conflict alone painted him alive, the desperation for survival battling against the conscience, that was a nice touch. It has potential to go big, especially when author has more chapters out and explores the mc more. All in all, a thumbs up.
Overall, a 5/5. - Ellen TaylorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an excellent addition to the grimdark litrpg genre.
I'll start with the easy one, grammar. The grammar in this story was fine, and I'm not much of a stickler with it. As long as it didn't pull me out of the story, I'm pretty lenient.
The style, too, was good. It flowed well, staying on a linear time. Scene breaks were easy to understand. There seemed to be some head hopping, but not too much. Most of it stayed in our main character's head with his internal dialogue.
The story was excellent, and it dove right into the action right from chapter one. Not only was there the instant action and need for survival, but there was a greater mystery wrapped up in it as well. Mostly why is this all happening. It's a great overarching mystery that drives the curiosity to keep reading.
The character of Eric, too, was great. Being in a grimdark setting, it makes it easy to sympathize with his character. Needing to survive, seeing all the terror and pain around him. Even the characters who died pulled at my heart strings. It was well done.
Overall, if you're searching for a grimdark litrpg, give this one a try! - KhaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The beginning chapters were action packed and gritty, which was a wonderful sign of things to come.
If you have ever wondered about the sheer horror you'd feel if you suddenly woke up to monsters and an alien world, this book does a great job of putting it into writing. The way the hurt experienced by the Eric is written is so immersive. I could very easily imagine myself in that situation.
This is how you do litrpg.
The style is nice. The author knows how to describe pain and emotions well. And the action is written in an engaging way. The only minor gripe I have was the odd trope of thinking aloud that's so common in this genre even when it's unnecessary but its minor and I didn't really notice it after the first chapters.
Haven't gone too far into the story but so far I'm definitely interested to know more. The author definitely knows how to pique my curiosity,
Grammar is well done. Very easy to read and the prose is solid. Any minor typos pointed out were quickly fixed.
So far we've only met the MC and another character but they already feel realistic. The MC is ex-military and seems competent. I definitely would love to see him fleshed out and explored more. I definitely have high hopes.
It's a good story and its definitely something I'll recommend if you're a litrpg fan. - L.E. FrenchRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: I appreciate the writing style for this story. It flows well with descriptions that paint a good image in your mind. The prose never slows down the pace of the story, but it is well written. This novel strikes a very nice balance with style.
Story: The story really shone in this novel, with plenty of action right off the bat. I thought that the initial battles were really interesting and even humorous, especially the bit about the rabbit. The progression starts pretty quickly too, which is nice to see. There's a lot of potential with this one and it promises to remain an engaging read.
Grammar: The author clearly has put time into finding grammatical errors. It is ac clean read.
Character: Eric is a great character. His voice is well done and there were certain parts where he cracked me up with his dialogue or internal thoughts. He felt very realistic to me and kept me caring about what happened in each chapter. I love character's who show the promise of progression and he certainly does. This is a compelling hero for the story.
Overall, this is a great read that I highly recommend. The engaging and voicey writing really drew me in. - Lucian T. Will be exciting where the author takes us after the non-stop action settles. The action has been great so far, with strong writing and good attention to pacing.
Style: I haven’t struggled with the flow so far, but I would be careful here, as it can potentially jar the reader when you switch back and forth from omniscient to internal dialogues. This might become more challenging for readers when you introduce more characters.
Grammar: nothing that would significantly disrupt the flow.
Story: The set up is a familiar one, with some mysteries in store for us with the system. We start to have some questions where I am in the story, but I would say the focus has been on survival so far. Am expecting some more coming up though, so should be exciting.
Characters: So far we have only met a couple of characters, so not much room for development, but the constant action have helped us to an extent understand the main character and their complexity. I would say it will be interesting to see how Eric will choose his path forward and why we should care about him.
Great read so far, would recommend to give it a shot! - SilvarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Embark on an exhilarating journey through the immersive world of litRPG with this compelling debut, guided by the enigmatic protagonist, Eric. From the very first page, the narrative thrusts you into a heart-pounding whirlwind of action, as Eric navigates the treacherous landscape of survival. His inner conflicts and steadfast determination add layers of complexity to the gripping tale, promising an epic adventure filled with twists and turns.
Style:
The author's adeptness at balancing the fast-paced action with introspective moments from Eric's perspective is commendable. However, there's a slight inconsistency in perspective transitions that, while not overly disruptive, warrants some attention. Nevertheless, the straightforward storytelling style ensures that the narrative flows seamlessly, allowing readers to empathize with Eric's struggles and triumphs.
Grammar:
With polished prose and minimal grammatical errors, the writing maintains a high standard throughout. While occasional punctuation mishaps may crop up, they do little to detract from the overall readability of the text. It's evident that the author has a firm grasp of language and wields it skillfully to immerse readers in Eric's journey.
Story:
At its core, this tale revolves around Eric's primal instinct for survival, weaving in elements of mystery and intrigue to keep readers guessing. As Eric grapples with the challenges of his new reality, layers of complexity begin to unfold, hinting at a deeper narrative waiting to be explored. While the focus on survival is prevalent, there's a tantalizing sense of impending revelations that promises to elevate the stakes even further.
Characters:
While the character development is still in its nascent stages, glimpses of Eric's depth and complexity shine through, particularly in his internal struggles. The interplay between survival instincts and moral dilemmas adds a compelling dimension to his personality, hinting at the potential for rich growth as the story - ikdahlRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story that I think will quickly become a favorite on RR, combining many of the well loved tropes and elements into new packaging, driven by an author with a great command of their tools. The classical survival story is given an engaging structure, with a plot and narrative that keeps the reader wanting more!
The story is a classical blend of survival and mystery wrapped in LitRPG, with a clear system that grows out of the action. The action scenes are both visceral and easy to follow, and the narrative is greatly helped by Eric's interactions. The undercurrent of mystery and exploration is great (this is an important differentiator to me personally - I don't really care for pure Numbers go Up - this mystery is what really drives me to connect with a story)
With regards to the author's style we have an author that excels at crafting a narrative that keeps the reader wondering what will happen next, making us click that "Next Chapter" button as soon as we reach the end of the chapter. The world-building grows organically as the story progresses, giving us a unique and mysterious world that almost a natural part of the cast. A minor comment might be to split up the early fights with other content, but that is purely a matter of preference.
When it comes to the characters, the story primarily (at this point anyway) revolves around Eric, who is both complex and relatable. His approach and reactions to the situation he finds himself in is well crafted, serving to showcase a multifaceted person who is not just there to drive a plot.
When it comes to grammar and spelling there is nothing that stands out, it's all smooth and the author obviously knows how to shape words :) - keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Let’s talk about Laws of Desire by Flokistar. First off, not going to lie, I want to tell the author how cool their cover is; that drew me in right away. Second, there’s so much action right from the start! I’m the kind of person who likes to hop right into it, and this story delivered! A crazy earthquake that leaves the MC in pain and nearly mangled, trying to battle a strange new world and terrifying beasts who seem to have something wrong with them? …Speaking of which, I really enjoyed the creativity behind the creatures and world. We see things unfold as the MC does, and I was in wonder and awe of the expansive imagination of the author, all while keeping the action rip-roaring. Well done! The system is, also, very intriguing. I’m looking forward to learning more as the story unfolds!
Grammatically, I didn’t notice anything that paused my enjoyment of the story. I really liked how the character’s direct thoughts were italicized. It gave a nice internal monologue to the scenes (especially the action ones which, honestly, most were).
I’d highly recommend this! I followed and favorited; you should too! This story is only beginning, but I can’t wait to see where it heads! - ttsRoyal Road★★ 1.5Grammar and spelling are good, so is the initial premise too.
The issues with this story are that a) the author doesn't seem to know how to deal with injuries in a vaguely realistic manner, b) doesn't know how to write believable fight scenarios, and c) thus is forced to constantly save the MC over and over and over again via plot armor and """incredible""" coincidences.
A) Injuries basically don't matter: the MC (and the animals too) get ripped up, chunks chewed out of them, gallons of blood spewed everywhere, limbs chewed down to the bone, etc etc. None of it actually matters. At all. The MC fights on without hardly any issue at all no matter how grievous the injuries. Oh he might cry out in pain or grimace his face but that is about it. There is no hint of healing going on either, at least initially, and the MC doesn't seem to find his ability to continue fighting despite his terrible injuries as unusual in the least.
B) The fight scenarios often don't make sense in that the MC should be killed immediately. He often goes up against opponents or monsters with several times his level, sometimes there'll be multiple of them too, who are at least moderately skilled or intelligent (which the MC doesn't appear to be either of those things) and wins anyways. If it wasn't for the over dramatic gore porn wounds that get delivered to the MC routinely it would lend a Saturday morning cartoon vibe to the fights. As is none of the fights matter, you can safely ignore them and hit the scroll wheel, the MC always wins no matter the odds against him and seems to never really change his approach or learn much either from them.
C) The MC always wins because the author is always saving him. Either he just happens to sense a arrow coming out of nowhere because ???????, or lands a """"lucky""""" impossible just-in-the-right-spot blow against a hyperbeast that outlevels him massively, or just happens to stumble across the right item at the right time without even trying.
