Komena Siri and The Stolen Spell
Community Rating
Description
Thing's had been going well for Komena Siri. After years of working as a private investigator, she had settled into the comfortable mediocrity of her dreams. Cases were coming steady, she had enough time to watch the sand ship races and she hardly knew most of the smugglers she had caught lately. Then she was hired by the city's ruling archmages.
One of them number has been murdered, despite her mastery of elemental destruction, and her most recent spell has gone missing, stolen by the killer. Now she's forced to trade small time thugs and lost trinkets for outrunning summoned demons, blood thirsty mages and the politics of a city of sorcerers. The only help she'll have is her wits, the fruits of a misspent youth on the city's rough streets, a disgraced foreign diplomat and his young, perpetually annoyed ward.

This should really have a lot more attention than it does. Komena is a self-assured, extremely competent character with a bit of mystery behind her--like Jasnah Kholin from Stormlight Archives. The worldbuilding is strong, and Komena's occupation opens a lot of doors for cool plot elements. Additional characters create new dynamics, and the author does a great job of exploring those dynamics and using them to add tension to the chapters. There are a few chapter cuts here which are really well-done and make me want to read more.
I can tell the author has done a lot of work setting up their world, and their descriptions are engrossing. The author also does really well with setting the scene and evoking that sort of noir detective style feeling. I'm not widely read in this genre, but I love what the author is doing here.
So far the story has increasingly added to the tension, and the author is really good at getting you to turn the page, even without bombastic fight scenes or other over the top methods of increasing tension. This kind of subtle tension is more difficult to achieve, and it speaks well of the author that they can manage this type of subtle manipulation of the stakes at hand.
Komena, while cold at first, develops into a very sympathetic and likable character as you read.
Looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds. Thanks for the read!
