BrutalGladiatorialcombat between cursed teens
"The road to freedom is single file."
Fifteen-year-old North is cursed. He is cursed to be a slave, cursed to fight in the bloody pits of Far Mantys, cursed with a temper he can barely control, and cursed in the truest sense—his body that of a monstrous beast hybrid.
A possession of the savage former mercenary Atar BloodRock, North is painfully aware that if he can't gain his freedom death in the pits is only a matter of time. But for a boy raised in slavery and taught nothing but violence there is only one slim path to that freedom.
Win. And keep winning till the whole city is screaming his name.
A bloody,fantasy-sports adventure.

- ATristeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of those rare stories where it doesn't matter if you enjoy the genre or not; you just settle down and read the writer's prose for the pure enjoyment of experiencing it. The main character, North, is incredibly well-written. He feels alive; you can tell the author has a special place in his heart for the cursed man. North curses when he shouldn't, speaks out of turn, regrets his actions often, and makes observations that show his clear bias or inclination (many of which are more than likely wrong).
The fight scenes are well-paced and well-planned. They draw you into the scrum, feeling every blow, running at the same speed as North's thoughts. I think the world is well-constructed. Not much has been unveiled as of yet, but you get a feel for the gritty slave colosseum that the main character has inhabited. He takes you around as if he's showing you his home, but it's just the natural course of events in his day. It's a very smooth way of introducing the setting.
Also, major props for the smoking scene. I know it's a small aside, but those types of additions really bring the world to life for the reader. I've known a few people to use an apple pipe a time or twelve, and that's the exact scenario that plays out. Well done! I'll be following this work. - Boy BayawakRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: Simple and easy to follow, the action is really good specially at the start of the story! Nice one!!!
Grammar: Compliments the style so its very good. Quite enjoyable read!! I don't really see the anything bad on it and it clearly tells what is happening specially the action!
Story: I love action from the get go and this is right up my alley 1 v 4 and he wins. But story wise there is still not enough to see the whole story but the plotting keeps you reading hehe! And the blurb says he will fight until he becomes a champion, ooh 'GRIMDARK'.
Character: There is still no character development or anything but I can tell that the main character is badass, I like it. The only light on his situation is at least he is allowed to practice weapons!! Oh and I was actually waiting for him to laugh because he is a HYENA and he did!
Overall: I would love to know what would happen next and the action is really full filling!! I totally understand what Grimdark means after reading this (I'm a newbie)
Keep up the good work and congrats for the publish!! Good Day!!! - Lucian T. EinarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Bloodthirsty Beginnings: A Dark Fantasy Adventure Unfolds
Overall: "King on The Sands One: BloodRock" kicks off with a gripping start, introducing a cursed protagonist thrust into a brutal world of gladiator fights and slave trading. The story shows promise with its unique premise and intense action sequences, leaving readers eager for more.
Style: The narrative style of "King on The Sands One: BloodRock" is straightforward and compelling, drawing readers into the gritty world of Far Mantys. While the story excels in action scenes, there is room for improvement in sentence structure to enhance readability and flow.
Story: "King on The Sands One: BloodRock" sets the stage for an enthralling tale of survival and redemption as the protagonist, North, navigates the treacherous world of the fighting pits. The concept of cursed hybrids adds depth to the plot, promising intriguing developments in future chapters.
Grammar: While the story flows well overall, there are instances of grammatical errors and awkward sentence structures that may disrupt the reading experience. With some editing and revision, the story could become even more captivating.
Character: Despite the limited number of chapters, "King on The Sands One: BloodRock" introduces compelling characters, particularly the fierce and enigmatic North. The inner monologues and reactions provide insight into the characters' personalities, setting the stage for further development and growth as the story progresses. - MirpletRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly, the story is rather intriguing. I like the rise from the bottom tropes. There totally needs to be a "Are you not entertained!?" Moment later on. So far, it's a good story can't complain about anything. I am also interested in the whole curse thing. Like is there curse upgrading? Will he go full wear wolf hyena? Are his parents secretly some sort of hyena gods? Will he surivie the spice lord fight?
Also liking the combat its very nice and I can follow it really well. Like honestly if he almost beat the four kids with his sucky short sword then how good is he when he has acess to his actual weapon.
Another thing I can think of and I don't if it's already planned but if he is half beast then he should have like way better senses. Honestly, I was expecting some sort of super beastly sense to kick in and he would start whooping butt. Still though I guess that would make him rather op. Love the bite idea from hyenas it's kinda awesome. Along with what I believe is the annoying high pitch laugh they do? Maybe not sure but that's what it felt like.
The world also seem interesting, like I wonder how it functions and if slave towers are everywhere or is it a just one place type of thing.
Either way, good job, great stuff. - Scialytic KnightRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far, I’m really enjoying King on the Sands. The characters feel fleshed out and individual, especially the main character who has me very invested in his plight.
It was a bold choice to write in first person present tense, but for this story it works perfectly in my opinion. It’s great for situations like this where the MC has a lot of internal moral debate and faces violence, betrayal, and other twists (Red Rising anyone?).
The worldbuilding and reveal of that world is done expertly. There is little info dumping, and the reader is expected to pick up on things, because the POV character already knows everything he’s experiencing. It’s refreshing to read a story on here where it’s not the MC experiencing the world/system/whathaveyou for the first time.
The novel pace isn’t too fast at this point as we’re getting acclimated to the characters and world. It feels very real to me. The fight scenes are well described, clear, and thrilling! It’s clear the author has some experience and knows what they’re talking about.
While it doesn’t take away from my overall score or enjoyment, there are some occasional grammatical and formatting issues. Random capitalized words, extra paragraph breaks, missing commas.
Overall, I am so glad I came across this novel. I know it’s early in the story, but there’s a lot of potential here and I can’t wait to see where it goes. I’ll definitely be following this one. - Raj Ch, AuthorRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Despite typically avoiding gladiator-inspired literature, I took a chance on this one, and I'm glad I did. The author's skill in rendering the fight scenes with vivid detail, likely stemming from their background in martial arts, truly immerses the reader in the action. While the overarching plot may not be groundbreaking, its execution is commendable, maintaining a brisk pace and introducing a captivating world that keeps the reader engaged. I particularly appreciated how the slaves' perceived deformities influenced their fighting styles, adding depth to the narrative.
However, there are areas where improvement is needed, such as the need for additional proofreading and the avoidance of monotony in certain sentences. Despite these flaws, I found the book to be an enjoyable read, deserving of a solid 3.5 out of 5. With some editing refinement, it has the potential to reach a higher rating of 4. - JurekaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story was well written according to me atleast. The word choice, hmmm, maybe I'll copy it. The grammar no mistakes in my eyes, atleast.
So the story starts with MC telling how the people in youth pit slave something, always challenge him wounding him badly. Now that's interesting was to start.
I like how the MC's belief was like shown early on, with his goal in front of the readers eye. And the beginning is a literal challenge that the MC is fed up with.
All in all the first chapter seems slow but by the end of it you will want more. - LokiTheQuickRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall: this is a fun story, and for me it’s mostly the main character. The author isn’t scared to write a flawed, challenge MC. He doesn’t get everything right, he pays for his mistakes, and he’s…well he’s not an Adonis to say the least.
You’ll probably get pulled in for the fight scenes, but if you’re like me you’ll stay for the world building, the compelling setting and enticing journey, and frankly wanting to see just what the MC is going to do next.
Style: first person, from the perspective of a flawed character with a temper can be challenging, but it’s well written. I think it takes a couple of chapters to really find his voice, but it’s worth it.
Story: the story unfolds slowly, but that makes sense given the tight scope of the MCs goals. You’ll find yourself caring about specific people and their individual goals a little more than the overall narrative I think.
Grammar: some awkwardness, the author really progresses in his prose as you move forward. I suspect the author will rewrite the first chapter some day just to make it live up the quality of the later ones.
Characters: this is what I found myself reading for, as this story has a lot of characters in it, and they’re all individuals. It would be easy to just say: look it’s a bunch of gladiators who want to be the best, but the author really makes sure that there’s more motivation and personality to each one. - hesrethRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This. is ridiculously well written wth.
It's feels so well thought out! Loving our lil Hyena boi and his anger issues, and the world makes me want just so much more. Gives me Will of the Many vibes.
I have a gripe with it though, and that's that there's not more of this yet!
-.5 for some weird sentence structures and grammar/punctuation errors that disrupted my flow of reading
Will definitely follow and update this review when more chaps are up! - SilverWebWeaverRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I very much enjoyed following North. He feels young, while having the appropriate grit and experience for his situation. His situation is tragic without whining. The story and world sucks you in and achieves the balance between being easy to follow while intriguing.
The cons first: There are quite a few misplaced commas and periods, along with grammer and punctuation mistakes. It interrupts the flow of the writing, making it clunky in places. However, it is far from unreadable and shouldn't be taken as a deterrent.
A few minor points are: There are places information could be streamlined, particularly in high-action scenes. It is sometimes confusing to have 'BloodRock' refer to both the compound and its lord. North's knees are described as 'facing backwards' when it seems to be describing 'digitgrade' posture (like hyenas).
Pros: The substance of the story is definitely on point. The world is fleshed out, despite North's limited experience, and expands in ways that feel natural to the narrative. The characters are similar rounded, with even side characters feeling like there is more to them despite their shorter screen time.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the small details, such as North's hyena 'laugh' being an anxious sound (as it is in hyenas). All around an enjoyable and worthwhile read.
