Kin of Jörmungandr

Description

I am the strongest creature in these tunnels… at least, that’s what I believed until something beyond my comprehension destroyed my territory. I am a serpent at the top of the food chain. A master at threading through the rifts of distorted space. So now that sapience forces its way into my mind, why am I facing so many problems? It is worse than the lack of proper challenge given by other predators of the warped tunnels in recent memory. No longer do I have a territory to waste away time; destroyed by a spaceless being. All I can do now, is search for an escape from the distorted caverns before the world collapses on them. Is there anything beyond? Will I find a challenge? I will have to see. What to Expect:- Snake protagonist. (non-human/non-humanoid. And will not gain a human form)- Inhuman mindset. (but not totally monstrous/evil)- Strong MC. (but emotionally inexperienced)- Spatial distortions and manipulation. (The snake swims through portals) Note: This is a project I’ve wanted to work on for a while now. A progression fantasy xenofiction following an actual monster gaining sapience, rather than a human reincarnating, which are much more common. I want to explore the truly inhuman mindset of a creature that is given the same breadth of emotions as people. This is not a story of blind action and slaughter (though there is some of that), this is a story focusing on the personal growth of a character that is by all definitions monstrous. I've only recently become aware of xenofiction as a genre, and it's quickly becoming my favorite. And Kin of Jörmungandr is setting quite a high bar already.
We still don't have a name for the protagonist of this story, or even a gender as far as I'm aware, so I'll go with Hebiko for this review as a nod to tradition. Or maybe Midoraori?
Anyway, Hebiko certainly starts out quite arrogant, like the curmudgeonly old snake it is. That's entertaining in its own way, but the pace and method with which Hebiko grows into a hero worth rooting for is masterful. Survival is difficult enough in a world where you can be killed by something too big for your vision to capture, but now it has to be a social creature too in a way that can't come naturally to a reptile! And all without ever knowing the joys of a good sunny basking rock. A tragic hero, indeed.
Every battle is riveting, even the curbstomps, because the emotional stakes always keep it that way. I will say that the way twisted space is described as "bends" and "loops" can be somewhat confusing to visualize - it's not really how I understand real life spacial distortion to work, either - but describing what Hebiko can do is not a challenge I envy as a writer.
Scia is, of course, a delight. Whenever she isn't on screen I'm wondering "where is she?". But then, so is Hebiko, the poor thing. It's hard to have a charge.
The interludes and connections with the author's other work are also fascinating, and I can't wait to read how it all converges. I'll be subscribing to the Patreon for sure, just for a chance at a small peek.
As a side note, all of the ads for this fiction bring me great joy. I desperately hope they're all collected somewhere so I can look at them when I need to smile. :)

We follow mr giant snake as he grows after having his home destroyed by to him an unfathomably powerful being. I love the fact that it doesn’t just become him slithering around fighting bosses and becoming some overpowered creature. We get to see his emotional psyche grow as he starts to come to terms with what he is , what he was and what he wants to be, and we carried along with the authors prose to discover the world he’s created and the challenges it will throw at mr giant snake.
I’m a man of very little words ,probably why I struggle with my own stories lol. Seriously! 200 words. I would rather type nice! and give a thumbs up to convey my appreciation. Thank you author, I’m truly excited to see where this story goes.
I do wonder since you use jormugandr (hope I’m spelling that right) if we are going to see any other creatures or people associated with the Norse pantheon or is it more of a “name after Popular Big Snake” kind of thing.
I still haven’t attained the word count. I am left in this bleak dark word box (I use dark mode). I know I’m probably supposed to be giving some criticisms or something but that part of my brain was turned off whiles I was reading so I apologize.

Chapters aren't filled with overly long prose and extraordinarily detailed descriptions of the environment, but the author still manages to convey a clear picture of how the space appears which is something I quite like.
There are small grammatical mistakes and typos every now and then, but nothing that would detract from the reading experience and this story's grammar is definitely above par for a novel on Royal Road.
There's only so much that can be said about a story when it's not even been 20 chapters. It has been quite simple so far, but it seems to slowly be building up to more things happening once we exit the confines of the underground as well as setting up some larger scheme in the background.
The biggest factor of this work so far are surely it's characters despite there only being two of them for now. The author makes sure that these characters are given not only the time they need to flesh out their personality, but also sets them up for further development later or even already. Honestly, it is quite an astonishing feat to have a relationship between two characters be so fun, especially considering neither of them can talk as of now.
Overall I can say that I am very much looking forward to the continuation of this work and absolutely adore Scia and the Snek.
This novel is set in the same world as another work by this author, Young Flame, but neither are necessary to read the other.
(Rating will probably be updated with more chapters, review will likely not)

One of the best books I've read on this site. The mechanics of the spacial distortion may take a few chapters to fully understand, but once you do it's surprisingly intuitive (or at least it felt that way for me). The protagonist feels interesting and complex, and the opinions they have on things and conclusions they come to always make sense considering their life experience.
Despite her lack of dialouge so far, the other major character is also incredibly well written.
The worldbuilding in this book (and Young Flame, the other book by the author that is set in the same world) is again really really good. The locations visited are fascinating, and my only complaint is that I wish the book would go into even more detail about them (not that it's lacking that or anything, it's just what I enjoy the most and I want to see more of it) but I understand that kind of thing isn't for everyone.
If you couldn't tell by my review so far, I highly recommend this story.

Honestly after 10 hours of university I do not possess the strength to sit down and write the proper review this novel deserves, I will rewrite this when my soul returns to my body.
Regardless this novel is one of the best on RR right now, it has Titanic battles, an mc that is very relatable despite what it is and some chapters hit really hard, I have more to say but I have exhausted my thoughts.
Know that I would give 5 stars in everything if I had the brain power to write more

Writing style is clean, it’s descriptive and not confusing. 10/10
Grammar is pretty much flawless, I didn’t notice anything.
Story is good, however, it is somewhat slow burn for plot developments (not necessarily a bad thing, the author lets things be fleshed out)
Character is definitely where this story shines, the MC goes through experiences that shape how they think (character growth doesn’t come out of nowhere) and the non human MC actually feels non human.
One thing that I will say is that I don’t like the early POV changes in the story, they are a little confusing when they mention events and countries that simply don’t get explained in the story. I also feel that the worldbuilding of nation and various faction could be explained upon more.

To start of with, so far this has been a character novel with minimal moving parts, and for the start of a book that’s perfectly fine.
The characters are so far incredibly charming and there is time and care being taken to not only flesh them out but develop them in some sense. Considering neither character can talk it is downright impressive.
The story itself is very simple but I chalk that up to being less than 20 chapters in. There are hints to a grander conflict but until that point the current goals are perfectly suitable with various locals to yet explore. The author clearly has the creative spirit to keep this story interesting.
While there are grammar errors here and there it’s the normal amount seen on most royal road stories and they don’t take enjoyment out of the story. There’s never a moment where you are at a loss of what is being said or meant to be said.
Overall this is a good read with solid, likable, non-human characters with an excellent chemistry. The author is able to give the reader more than enough to feel invested in them and even relate to them on some level, all without a word of dialogue spoken by the MC. That’s genuinely impressive. This is an impressive book with an impressive author.

The writing delves deep into exploring what it means for a creature, not bound by human form or mindset, to develop emotions and face challenges beyond mere survival.
Character development is handled masterfully; the snake evolves in unexpected ways, offering readers a fresh perspective on growth and self-awareness. The plot keeps you hooked with its layer of mystery.
From eating prey in gruesome detail to manipulating spatial distortions, every element adds depth to this fascinating narrative. Paced perfectly with fluid prose, this story offers readability without compromising complexity.
Overall stakes are consistently engaging, maintaining pressure without overwhelming the reader—a fine display of balancing tension throughout 24 chapters reviewed thus far.

I was expecting a book similar to other monster main character books, where all the growth is in their strength and fighting skills. This book is different, the main character is already at what he thinks is the peak of strength(in the beginning) and isn't focused on growing stronger, instead he grows emotionally by accidentally adopting a small creature.
I recommend giving it a try.

This is a story about a naturally spawning snake monster, that spent the majority of its time living inside a cave where it quickly became the apex predator due to its natural advantages in that environment, it became sentient and looked down on every other living creature, because they couldn't compete.
This changed when a even larger monster destroyed his him, over time he found a friend and learned empathy.
I find it strange that his emotions are so human considering that he's a snake, in my opinion it's almost like a reincarnated story but with out the reincarnation, if that makes sense. As he has human factors.
The story is interesting and well done, and the chapters flow into each other without much resistance.
The only real issue I have with the story is the beginning he was shown to be narcissistic, when hunting and even torturing his prey, but when he was on the receiving end he acted like a coward, which I found to be pathetic honestly. Except when it was the Titan.
He also quickly forgets he desire to hunt in a very human fashion and instead decides to dote on a  small bat and have it as his priority.
My only issues with the story is his emotional don't feel like they belong to a snake, and they're very quick to change, giving the impression he is bipolar. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a reincarnated individual but with out memories, if the author didn't express that fact.
    Over all a 4.75 stars as I can't give out 4.75 so I settled on 4.5. 👍
