Journey Into The Abyss: A Progression Fantasy
Community Rating
Description
Sagil Yuudai's life was a living hell. Whether it was grinding bottom-tier quests and never ranking up or being belittled by those around him, it was far from easy.
So, when his Uncle-Figure invited him to escape from that cycle, he was never going to say no. Especially when that escape came with the quest of saving the world from the abyss.
There's just one problem.
They're not even in the world they're supposed to save anymore.

- Chaos JesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A progression fantasy clearly inspired by anime with a great premise and concept, and an execution that shows that there is still much more to come.
The style itself is outside of my wheelhouse, but those are always the best ones, honestly. The pacing and general structure is inspired by anime and light novels in that you explore the concept, the characters, the world, then the adventure. It's a neat way of doing things, and is executed quite well.
Nothing really grabbed my attention on the grammar side of things. A few dropped quotations here and there, but I'm guilty of way worse. I also tend to give grammar a general pass during writeathon. So the fact that it was just that is above and beyond.
The story in the first few chapters set up an interesting premise to give you an idea of the characters, then take a character and throw him into a different interesting premise. This is great conceptually, because the character is already used to existing in one world, and now must find a way to adapt to a new one.
Speaking of character, Sagil is a great one. He lives with so much hate, so much uncertainty, and just enough support circle to make for a tragic yet hopeful character. Keeping in mind that he is thrown into a new world where he must not only accomplish his mission, but adapt his personality to survive and exist, and you're in for one hell of a progression fantasy.
Overall, this was a fun story to start up, and honestly, I would personally be afraid to write this during writeathon. That being said, Kamikoto is absolutely nailing it. To keep things this clean and lined out is impressive, to say the least, and the story speak volumes on how well Kami is managing. - DreameroftheUnknownRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I must say, I don't read a lot of progression fantasy but this one right here? This is an enjoyable one. Sure, there are a few grammar mistakes here and there but they do absolutely nothing to detract from the story. The worldbuilding is pretty good, and the characters feel alive in a way that is very hard to achieve in storytelling. It's somehow both action-packed while taking time to develop its character and setting. Overall, a prime example of progression fantasy. Keep up the good work, Kamikoto!
- emily_mccoshRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A cool progression fantasy with a style different than I've read so far, some really neat worldbuilding, and a rather intense MC!
Style: The style and structure of the way the story is told is a bit different than I'm used to, but it's really neat and keeps my attention! Lots of the sentences are short and to the point, particularly during the action, which makes it nice and punchy. The sibling relationship is written so well, and I love those kinds of dynamics in stories, so I'm here for it!
Grammar: Nothing much to say here, there was a typo here and there and an odd word or two combined, but that honestly could've been the author's style choice, so it's definitely not a big deal and didn't even pull me out of the story.
Story: The worldbuilding is really cool in this one! Our MC is a level D adventurer, and he has a younger sister who seems to be some sort of half-demon. There are all other sorts of monsters and non-human species, which makes for a very interesting read. The atmosphere is perfect for a world where a dark mist hangs in the air, it all felt very alive and realistic, loved it!
Character: Like I mentioned, our MC is a level D adventurer who's unable to rank up and scorned by others on their island due to his father's actions, and you can tell he's become very hardened and angry. I love characters like this, and I'm looking forward to watching his progress and how he responds to all the crazy new things being thrown at him! - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Fun little progression thing, though it has some heavy inspiration from LNs. While I am personally not a fan of that style of writing, I do believe many find it enjoyable so it will be rated as such. Overall, I can't find many grammar mistakes that needs to be pointed out. Personality is great if a bit stilited with the conversations. I can't seem to find the speaking patterns of the characters. Might just be me.
4.5/5. Quick fun story. - luda305Royal Road★★★★ 3.5When the other reviews say this is anime or LN like, I think what they mean is that the main characters are teenagers and act fairly immature. Particularly when the protagonist meets and begins to learn from his young, female teacher, they have the most awkward social interactions; it's almost like they don't know how to speak. I'd probably call it sexual tension, but there's no explicit hint that's what it is.
That said, more generally, I find the dialogue very hard to follow. The main issue is that it's chock full of speech disfluencies (had to look that phrase up), such as huh, um, erm, well, so like, hmm, etc. A little bit is fine, but there's just way too much here, and makes it very tedious to read.
That said, the writing style isn't all bad. I do like that the story barrels along pretty well without explaining things. It's a good balance of show, don't tell, and let the audience figure it out. That said, there are a few instances where you have an action transition or scene transition that's really rough and hard to follow.
