It's Hard Being A Background Character

Description

Just after being transmigrated into a world of immortal cultivation, Zhang Wei naively believed he'd struck gold!

But who could blame him?

All those web novels he read depicted that after an average Joe with no attachments to his previous world transmigrated into a body with the same name, he'd become the greatest legendary being after countless thrilling adventures alongside the assistance of a mighty System!

And... he fulfilled all those criteria!

Unfortunately, those wishful thoughts vanished after seeing his reflection in the water.

No...it wasn't because his looks remained impressively unimpressive.

It was due to the two words in block capitals that hovered just above his head:

[BACKGROUND CHARACTER]

This isn't quite satire, but it certainly got me to chuckle here and there. The premise is a fairly typical cultivation story, but from the perspective of a self-aware side character. He even has a system, which rewards him for acting like it thinks he should. A pretty fun and enjoyable story, I like it!

It's different then anything I've read. It's a good read that got me to laugh. Hopefully the "background" charcter can become the ultimate background character that all background characters can look up to. This novel is a great read for anyone looking for something different because they are tired of the mc slapping everyone's face.

Quality lighthearted work with good humor elements. Not enough chapters being released though imo for the subject matter. I hope Author will sink more time into this as it is a pretty fresh take on the isekai xianxia parody genre. Give it a try and make sure the review is 50 words long

Style: 5/5- Assuming that this is originally written in English, it mimicks the style of a translated novel very well, without any of the odd word choice, typos, or translation failures. The narration is also witty, not overly prosaic (which I sometimes like, but in this case it fits the vibes of the story), and is well paced to make good jokes. This has actually been improving as the story goes on as well.
Grammar: 5/5- no mistakes, like I said before it mimicks a translated novel well but without the issues.
Story: 5/5- It's a clever and funny premise that actually sticks to its premise. Zhang Wei doesn't immediately break from being a background character and become more important than the protagonist, but at the same time, it never gets boring because he has his own issues to deal with related to being a background character, and there are multiple plots besides his plot to follow.
Character: 4/5- This is the one thing I'm rating less than a 5/5, for a pretty justified reason I think. The characters aren't super distinct and don't have memorable traits, just interacting with plot. I like Zhang Wei a lot, but I'm someone who gets attached to MCs easily even if they're a bit bland. I also lose track of which of his friends are which, and they're kind of idiotic; which would be fine, since it's a comedy, if they only had more depth! However, the new dynamic between Zhang Wei and Fan Lin is pretty good, so I have hopes for how the story can improve in this department and make the characters more interesting and likable.
Overall, I really like this novel! It's a type of transmigrator xianxia parody I'm always looking for, actually done right. It's simple, well-executed, and definitely has a lot of potential.
