A very good beginning! Great mix of characters in the original MMO game they were playing. Some knew what they were doing from long experience, others were clearly new players.
Mike is competent and capable, strong but not a Gary Stu.
The mystery why the players were summoned is beginning to develop nicely, I'm sure I'll see and learn more as the chapters present themselves. - TrelawnamousRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far, Lambert strikes a great balance between crunch, character, plot, and world building. While I read this story, I keep wanting to know what's gonna happen next, and so far things are following very well.
It's hard to review this early in a story, but the premise is great, an mmo guild gets kidnapped and sent into a character creator to enter a fantasy world.
The system used seems to be a simplified homebrew of dnd 3.5e, and the world is one he's been playing in for years (according to his reddit post). So far, that's making the system and world feel very fleshed out. With so much experience creating the world and system, it's easier for Lambert to drop little tidbits in conversation, or answer questions readers might have through dialogue. That level of detail and mastery alone should get you to give this a try.
The characters feel simple and grounded so far. You get a few interactions with them, and it's easy to understand who they are and what they want, which in this genre, let's face it, already puts Lambert ahead of the pack. There's a good variety of personalities and voices even at this early stage.
The half star missing in style only comes from the pitfall I see looming in the way system messages and information are displayed. I feel like to a reader unfamiliar with 3.5 it could seem a little confusing, but nothing Lambert does is unintelligible or anything. Other than that, the pacing of the story feels good, scenes all seem to have a dramatic purpose, and Lambert cuts scenes and links them together very fluidly.
Grammar has only lost half a star do to very, very minor comma issues, hyphen issues, and other small editing gaffs that the average reader won't ever notice. This story is miles ahead of the average on Royal Road in terms of craft.
I would say give this a shot if you want a nice western isekai, with gamers who make actual gamer decisions, using a dnd style system, and featuring a mix of younger and more mature characters who actual act that - Eklein455Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5I really Loved the opening....reminded me of playing guild wars and other similar games back in the day....and I really like the title. I am Looking forward to reading on. It is a bit heavy on stats so that is added benefit for those who like that kind of detail.
