- DMMWolfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Many will disparage the content of this story. This is a simple fact. You will encounter it in the comments section. The story touches on slavery and what that actually entails, and that topic doesn't sit well with some people. Even when it is used as a tool disparaging the practice.
The character's are deep, and deeply flawed people. This isn't some feel good story about some guy who is altruistic and becomes all powerful. This is a tale about an everyman who stumbles onto power, but still has the same fears, wants, and emotional outbursts of a regular guy. And he has to deal with the consequences therein.
The Author paints a beautifully gritty setting that is not kind to the people who inhabit it in the least, and it is easy to visualize the events as you read about them.
All in all an intriguing read that can draw you in so long as personal hang-ups do not interfere with seeing the full depth of what is written - BluetorcRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I almost didn't read this due to the negative reviews, but so glad I did.
Pros:
Starts off with a bang and keeps entertaining. I really like the writing style, and how engaging this story is.
Both the plot and the MC have good progression: not racing along too quickly, nor taking forever to have anything happen.
The author does a better job than most regarding the plot. it is well thought out with some clues and foreshadowing, but not enough that you will know what is going to happen. (Note: this is the reason for quite a few of the negative reviews. They didn't read long enough to find out what was actually happening.)
It has characters with personality and quirks. I really enjoy the complexity. I also enjoyed how my view of the characters changes overtime as I get more information on why they are behaving like they are. (note: sometimes my view on the character got worse before getting better.)
Cons:
Starting around chapter 40 the MC seems to loose most of his brains because: "Girls!!" (well, one girl in particular). It can get extremely frustrating with how poorly the MC justifies his actions and this element of the story lasts for quite a while. I honestly started disliking the MC due to this... However the reason for this is:
Take my word that the author knows what he is doing with the plot and characters' actions really do make sense. Please read the story versus the spoiler.
This is not a minor spoiler. Please do not continue.
I'm begging you! You'll ruin a great surprise!
Fine… here you are...
the reason the MC is behaving so irrationally and making such poor excuses for his actions is that he is being mind controlled by Envy. This is something that is a major part of the story for 50+ chapters that you don't know about, before finally being revealed.
Grammar: Their ain't not many issues. It's very much goodly. :D - ShirimeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0TLDR - Tense, emotional story w/ good character writing
The author has crafted a written an immersive story filled with interesting character interactions and mysteries to unfold. Personally, I think it takes a lot of skill to be able to weave story-wide mysteries in a way that doesn't feel cheap or annoying, but the author has managed to do that here in a way that I really enjoy. The first chapter/prologue sets up a question that only becomes more complicated as you read, and every bit of exposition feels like a reward instead of a slog which I love. Each challenge the MC faces maintains a fast pace instead of a drawn-out crawl. Characters reveal their personality through action and not just dialogue, which I really do appreciate. One of the earliest examples of this was Exill's class assignment and his reasoning for doing so, though I won't go into too much detail for spoilers. Everything comes together in a fun way that makes this story very engaging. FInally, as far as grammar goes, I didn't notice any issues or glaring mistakes. Everything is fine on that front, or maybe I'm just not good at proofreading.
Don't sleep on this story. It's shaping to be something really special! - ultrachezRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall, the story double downs on things that made the original source good and curtails some of its worse aspects. The only downside so far, which is annoying, is the virgin MC trope. There have been quite a few stories inspired by the original work, some focussed solely on the worse aspects and others with poor execution. This one comes out on top by moving away from some of the usual predictable tropes. Good work overall.
- Sacred-FireRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Perdition has a truly prodigious vocabulary, and it makes reading a joy.
The prose is scattered with interesting and thought provoking ideas, like chocolate chips in ice-cream. I liked the sci-fi backing to the isekai event, it helps to create a bridge of logic between the new world and ours, it also allows for some interesting foreshadowing.
The grammar is very good, no issues that i noticed. The flow of the story is also very good, smooth and easy to get lost in. I wasn't a super big fan of starting the story at the end point so to speak, in many cases it works, but I think with the Isekai litrpg structure it feels better to not know where the character development is going. That being said, the Perdition's skill as a writer is obvious, and I could already tell I was going to enjoy reading about how he gets there.
The cast of characters is fairly minor a the part I'm up to when writing the review, but I loved their regional vernacular and it was easy to feel the natives of the new world were a product of their local culture and history.
I love reading about MC's trying to figure out the system as they go, as I get to learn about it along with them. The function of having inhabited someone else's body provides a convenient way to bring up memories as they prove useful to progress the story or give us a little exposition.
Overall I enjoyed it a lot, and im looking forward to following Exill's development and watching the new world unfold. - AvidSeasonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I'm...technically not good at writing reviews.
But...I just wanted to say a few things while they are on my mind.
This story takes some weird turns.
It might put some people off, because of some author's choices I won't go into.
But I will say a few things.
The system: Great. It does some things I haven't seen before, but there's also something interesting about how unique it is with our mc. The 'relations' between the two get more interesting as the story goes on, mainly because that's the only way it could be.
The characters: Believable and relatable for where they're at in each chapter. While there are characters with motivations and character traits easily understandable, there are also a lot of nuanced side characters you can easily get attached to.
The plot: It's a lil slow goin, but there's a lot of things that happen that are interesting. It may not have an overarching story yet, but not all stories need that immediately.
Other than that, I can't think of much else to say. I just hope you enjoy it as much as I do. - animusrienRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Review is at the cusp of end of Book 2. I would suggest it to anyone, but you'll need to read through a lot of early slag as the author is growing more each chapter than the MC is. This is one of my favorite ongoing stories on RR right now and maybe the best for the last ~50 chapters. Note: there are plot elements are characters mentioned below, but no spoilers for anything further than chapter 2.
Pros:
- Love the concept. I've only seen world rejection once before in a Chinese novel and it was handled horribly. Hoping this goes well.
- Very little worldbuilding. It's kept it fresh without the horribly long exposition. You get what you need and sometimes not, we're pretty much right there with the MC as he learns.
- Combat mandatory, but so far not a focus. You will, thankfully, not find 13 chapter fights that lasted half a stick of incense.
Cons:
- The MC is trash and naive. He acts like a kid that's never so much as seen another woman, yet he was a 29 year old systems engineer thrown into the body of a 17 year old. It's great seeing him grow a bit, but he's not up to snuff where the setting needs him to be, and it shows in the awkward interactions he has with the inhabitants of the world. He is more on the line of how Hollywood sees high functioning autistics, but without the capability. He kittyfoots around the cheats he has because he's too afraid to use them; chickens out at the women surrounding him. At the current chapter of this writing, his world view is about to break down entirely, so hoping we see him rage with the power that only a sysadmin with a banhammer can; going from Gohan to Vegeta.
- Due to the focus on the MC, as is natural for most stories, we don't delve enough into the side characters. This is unfortunate as Envy and Tsarra are so much more dynamic and fleshed out than the MC is, when we barely know anything about either of them. Their background, desires, and goals - we know that of them, but still don't have that for the MC other than that - monkoRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I really did like this story. But this man was doing perfectly fine before he literally decided to self sabotage the perfect isekai life. It’s not really isekai rejection at that point, more like … stupidity compounded with a heavy dose of kicking yourself in the balls and blaming the world.
- StrategeRoyal Road★★★ 2.5The story has some very interesting worldbuildng in it, a cool idea for the litrpg system in place and the technical quality of the writing is perfectly servicable.
Where this story loses me, however, is on two fronts - the first more minor one is that the primary drama for a while comes from money concerns however the way money is handled makes everything feel rather arbitrary and random, as prices and income don't seem to follow an internal logic.
Second, and this is the bigger one, the story keeps introducing new characters, does a good job getting the reader invested in them - even building up a romance subplot - only to then drop the characters entirely a few chapters later in what appears to be a MC's tragic inability to do anything but run away from personal problems. Which, while perhaps a realistic character flaw is one that destroys my investment in the story.
I really want to like this story, but ultimately I can't recommend it. - jlkennedyRoyal Road★★ 2.0The writing style is good. The world/system setup show some interesting ideas. However in ~50 chapters to the point were I have read, the story has went through what appears to be multiple MC focus changes without really being clear why.
Some point around chapter 40, it started to look like the tags harem & sexual content should be applied. Given the constant focus changes and the story not going very far from that at the time of the review, it is unclear if that is the direction this is going or is just another temporary focus.
