- GonoaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I normaly am not that big a fan of mecha and steampunk, but this was surprisingly entertaining for me. My favorite parts about this story are the characters and the clear descriptions.
Story:
The story is some mixture of 2nd world war, steampunk and fantasy. Sounds like a weird combination, but it feels very natural in the story and not forced at all. I like it, that no one seems to be OP but struggle in the face of adversity with everything they have.
While the setting is certainly very interesting, it is a little complex to follow in the beginning. The characters often talk about events or things, which I don't know anything about. I generally like mystery, but I think it was a little bit to much unkown stuff in the first two chapters. But as these things are (probably) not important in the beginning, you can just read over them, knowing that they will most likely be explained further in the story.
Style:
The author manages to describe the complex machinery quite well in almost all cases, which I think is pretty impressive. Especially for someone who has no idea at all about engineering, which makes it very accessible.
The writing style also manages to keep me interested, even if the story is slow paced compared to other stories on RR. It contains so much interesting details, that it doesn't really matter.
Grammar:
Really really great. The only thing that was sometimes a bit weird for me: Certain words are written capitalised, but they are not names or something. I suppose it could be because these certain words hold big importance to the story, but it was nonetheless a bit confusing.
Character:
I really like the characters so far. Not only the MC, but the side characters as well. They are not some one dimensional characters, but seem "alive".
The only little flaw for me: I couldn't connect with the MC 100% so far. I guess that could be my personal preference, but I would have liked more insight on how she thinks about things. But that probably is also because I'm - North of My LandRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5On the positive side, grammar and style are pretty much perfect. You never get tripped by a they're/their/there confusion, or a 900-word run-on sentence.
The world is also interesting: you don't see many sociological takes on early-20th century steampunk. Yes, really.
Unfortunately I couldn't get past the second chapter.
The main reason: the characters.
Two of the protagonists are... Basically the same person, and alas that person is Black Mary Sue: an attractive young woman of african ancestry with an IQ of 300+ who got multiple degrees thanks to the fact that her name is androgynous (women, especially black women, are not quite allowed to be educated at this point in history - see above, sociological take on the steampunk genre).
This review comes in on chapter two, and I keep looking at their lines and thinking: shouldn't this line belong to that other character? The information we are given about their lives have similar problems.
As for the secondary characters, so far we have met, IIRC, five males: four of them are assholes, the fifth is (I assume) the remaining protagonist. One is a murderer, two are incompetent, and one is just meh. Oh, and the fifth is a wok genius.
Finally, there are parts that are just flat-out confusing.
I cannot, for example, figure out the layout of the plane we are introduced to in chapter one. Or what is going on in chapter two, when a character who should be unconscious and crashing (or in shock and crashing, or at least working really hard to avoid crashing) is suddenly drawing designs in mid-air.
Bottom line: if you want an OP mixed-race female character, go read Diary of a Teenage Mimic. From this same author, even.
Iron Angel... Needs more love.
