- dandelionetteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have too many theories!! But everything I’d want to post here would be a spoiler, so let me just say: this story feels like all the small details matter, and I can’t wait to learn more about the spirits and Felix and Isabelle too, maybe? Anyway, the action is really fun and visual; it feels like a crime that this isn’t a manga or anime or something where I could see all the cool spirit designs and what the rifts look like. The cliffhangers are also so mean?? But I’m kinda hooked at the same time?? Bah. I need more people to read this so we can pressure the author into writing faster…
- SkarabraeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like this story.
It is about a person who can see spirits and ends up having to deal with them for an agency. This premise is handled very well, and the characters involved are quite interesting. The story is a bit fast-paced, which isn't for everyone, but I think it works well here. - TheBBBRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story presents an intense, suspenseful journey through a maze of tunnels, with spirits lurking & antagonistic figures awaiting. As I read, the richness of the descriptions & the gripping atmosphere immediately stand out. The dark, chaotic maze, filled with various spirits, brings a thrilling sense of danger, while Kyrylo’s inner struggles add depth to his character. The pacing feels balanced between action & reflection, allowing me to connect with Kyrylo's growing resolve.
The appearance of Drakmir & Pel adds a fresh dynamic, bringing a formidable challenge. Drakmir’s sardonic demeanor contrasts well with Kyrylo’s straightforward resolve, setting up a suspenseful clash of motives. Pel’s stoic, restrained intensity is also intriguing & gives a sense of budding rivalry that keeps the tension alive.
The narrative style is really good, allowing me to be immersed without heavy handed explanations, which maintains the story’s momentum. Character development feels well paced, showing Kyrylo’s determination in the face of increasingly daunting threats, though the descriptions of the fight scenes could benefit from occasional simplification for clarity. Grammar is solid overall, with minor adjustments that could enhance flow.
Conclusion, this story excels at world building & creating an intense atmosphere, while skillfully fleshing out Kyrylo’s struggles. As a reader, I think, the combination of descriptive immersion & unfolding action makes it easy to be swept into the suspenseful, unpredictable journey ahead. - NolzenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0From the get-go, we get high stakes. The writing comprises intense action and unique interactions coupled with great grammar and tension.
While the story premise was not something that really stood out to me, the first chapter itself captivates me into reading more. Great start and am excited to see where the story leads. - S.D. HussRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story hits some really great points in terms of what I’ve read from this particular genre. If you're a fan of Monster Hunter or something of the like, this is right up your alley. The story follows Kyrylo as he is in the middle of his initiation into a government paranormal organization that hunts down and kills spirits when they show up to attack people.
Style: This I feel is where the book shines. The author's style is easy to follow, and paints a nice picture that you can imagine while reading. It isn’t overbearing or bloated with description or fluff dialogue. I really liked it.
Story: The story is where I found a bit of issues. I really was interested to know how Kyrylo started out. How he discovered his abilities, and how he was approached by the RIF. The story puts us right when he’s supposed to be saying goodbye to his old life. Before he even had a chance to really join the RIF he melds with a spirit, and needs to find out how to rid himself of said spirit before he’s killed by the RIF. The story picks up a lot though, when he finds his way into the spirit realm and goes on to fight a battle while on his way to find the ‘Rat-King’.
Characters: I enjoyed the characters in this book (Mainly Kyrylo and Felix). The author did a fine job building their personalities and giving me a reason to root for them.
Grammar: I found a few issues here, but nothing that affected my ability to absorb the information.
Overall I enjoyed what I read from this book. The character’s interactions and the author’s style ultimately made me feel satisfied with what I had read. Other than some issues with the story, I had a great time. I would recommend anyone who is interested in the paranormal genre check it out. - R.MagnusRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall:
I enjoyed reading this up to this point. I'm a fan of the supernatural genre and anything involving sprits/spirit world, so it was easy for me to pick up. I feel like the author is cooking up a great story here, and I'm definitely curious to see where it goes.
Style:
One of the strongest aspects of the story, in my humble opinion. The author's style is easy to follow, which makes it a fun read. Also, the action scenes are great.
Story:
The story is intriguing, and the spirit realm and its inhabitants, whom Kyrylo and Felix encounter, really leave you wanting to learn more. My only issue is the pacing, which often feels too fast. At times, scenes seem to happen to quickly (for example, the fusion with the spirit - a major plot point). Other times, it felt like something was missing for me to truly engage with the scenes (for example, maybe a patrol scene at the start to help us understand RIF better and how they combat spirits, and perhaps more backstory on Kyrylo, and especially Felix).
Grammar:
There are a few small mistakes, but they're insignificant. Full points from me here.
Character:
The characters are well-written overall, and the supporting cast especially leaves you wanting more of them. I really liked the dynamic between Felix and Kyrylo. However, as individuals, something feels missing. Kyrylo's attachment to his crush is developed and believable, but what about his family? Other friends, perhaps? His earlier life? If he had a sad life before meeting Isabelle, that would explain a lot, but I never felt like it was fully stated. Felix, on the other hand, is a bit odd. Most of the time, it's a good kind of odd, but occasionally it's just the confusing kind (for example, he wants to see the Rat-King for himself, yet continues crying about their decision to meet him all the way there, practically blaming Kyrylo for it). - The CommentatorRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0It seemed good enough. I just read the first chapter, but I believe it is a decent enough story. Nothing screamed to me as being atrocious, but nothing seemed truly amazing. I won’t continue reading, but that isn’t because I dislike the story, or where I think it’s going. I just don’t really like the genre, and thus, this story has no appeal to me.
- SpookyspacklesRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is a general review for the first four chapters of the story.
Good Stuff
Grammatically, the story is written well. Not too many errors and definitely readable and fun. The author has some really fun ideas to make a supernatural urban fantasy story, and weaves some comedy in to make a good dynamic between the Ky and Felix.
The stakes are raised in the first chapter, which I'll mention here to drive the point that this story is not a slow build up. If you like a fast pace, this has the potential to scratch that itch.
Points of Improvement
The book is in its development stage, with the main area of critique being how the events have unfolded so far. I love a fast plot, funky creatures and choices, the whole jazz. The issue is that there are actions that seem somewhat sudden and purely orchestrated to rush the plot. In future edits, it would be good to drip feed the audience some world lore to really set up those crucial moments that drive the plot forwards.
As an example of what was mentioned above (from the first chapter, since it's critical for a first impression) -> Ky's choice to tackle the spirit.
In this you established well why he didn't have a weapon, but as a reader, what I become confused about instead of intrigued by is:
a) why training never mentioned spirit merging, considering it's a death penalty
b) why this haunting was so bad that he had to deal with it right away, instead of walking outside and asking Felix for a weapon, and dispatching the spirit
c) why his first action was to tackle it when his perspective saw the spirit as 'cautiously' reaching out to his friend (this one is a little easier to adjust, could just remove the caution)
As mentioned, it would be very beneficial to build up the world a little bit. These pieces may very well be explained later, but they leave a feeling of confusion as opposed to curiosity. - RavensFantasyRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Overall, this story is fast-paced fiction that is written in third person. I will say this remains consistent throughout the story, at least it appears that way to me. Which is a good thing.
One thing in this story that I have enjoyed is the spirits and their behaviors. Their behaviors are different from that of the MC's. Which is always great to see. The spirits behaviors are a bit quirky and overall fun to read.
Characters: Ky and Felix do seem to be like a good pair of MCs. I would like to see a bit more on their relationship and how it had developed to what it is now.
Grammar: there are a few grammar mistakes here and there but it isn't terrible.
Overall, it was a good read. Just give it time and a bit of editing and I am sure it will be great. - RobinGSparrowRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Overall
If you enjoy paranormal fast-paced fiction with quirky monsters (spirits), you might enjoy this as well. My impression is this is solidly in the YA category, so make sure you adjust your expectations accordingly.
Style
The author’s voice may not be fully developed, but it’s getting there. There were places where I really appreciated the author’s frantic pace and the nearly slapstick relationship between the protagonist and his foil. Expect a rapid pace and quirky choices.
Story
As of chapter one, the story has already moved past the inciting incident and moved into dealing with it by chapter two. Expect a breakneck pace. While the premise has a lot of potential, and picks up by the fourth chapter, I would have liked more scenes to flesh out the world, setting the stage and background for plot and character development.
Grammar
There were spelling and punctuation issues, but I’ve seen much worse on RR. Unless you’re a grammar Nazi, you can get through it
Character Score
I’m conflicted. In terms of character development, without background and context, the protagonist and his foil are missing something essential. The protagonist’s relationship to the love interest he reaches to kickstart the plot is the most developed, except we only get a glimpse of a scene where she is cute, but there is so little, I’m left wishing there was more. On the other hand, the dialogue and interactions between Ky and Felix are what will make this story special, so pay attention to that going forward.
