Description
Charlie wasn’t what he himself would call happy, but he had a stable job, so he wouldn’t complain. And honestly, ten-hour days weren’t all that bad. What else would he spend his time on, otherwise? So, he was fully expecting to continue his career, in one form or another, until retirement. Then he died. In his own home, in his own bed. Only afterwards, now with far more arms and a strange relationship with gravity, did he start panicking. Not quite alive again and in a place he’s never heard of, Charlie isn’t sure what to make of a world he hadn’t thought of in more than a decade. Really, he’s lucky to be where he is. After all, if he’s never heard of Almia that means nothing bad happens there, right? This is a Pokémon fanfiction based loosely around the Ranger series. I do not own Pokémon.

- Snailman1999Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I just binged the 30 existing chapters today and it is 1:52am at the time of writing this review, I got in bed to try sleeping some time close to midnight, I was unable to put the story down and sleep because of how incredibly delightful of a read it was making it easily among my favorite stories to have read this year.
- WanderingOwlRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pokemon fanfiction that so far doesnt have drowning amounts of angst or trauma. Has so far handled the Isekai aspect fairly well, with it being relevant without also being a burden on the story or characters. I like Charlie, and find their constant overthinking relatable. I hope they can get poketherapy.
- Eagle0600Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is excellent right from the start. It's a deep exploration of the protagonist's psyche, a story about learning about the world around you. But most of all, it's the most unique take on how pokemon can fit into human society I've ever read.
In many fanfictions—and very often in the source media—pokemon are treated as either animals or people, but rarely both. Very few works both explore and embrace the dichotomy; what happens when a wild animal is a person? In this way, In the Ranger's Shadow is also excellent xenofiction. - FollowingReadingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Decently unique in PokeFics for having protagonist as a Pokemon, taking place in Almia, and centering around Pokemon Rangers for human characters.
Might figure out how to leave a more eloquent review later but for now I'll just say that I really liked the writing both in a technical and content sense. Definitely felt like this fic has more than lived up to its potential, would recommend anyone in the Pokemon fandom to read it and join me in wanting more fics like it. - AdversusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0TL;DR: Psychic tentacle ghost wizard slice of life.
That's it. That's the selling point.
In The Ranger's Shadow is not an action story in the sense that there's not pokemon battles nearly every chapter, but it is a progression story. It's largely about the personal growth of Charlie (The MC) as a damaged individual, as a pokemon partner to a ranger, and as a psychic/ghost powerhouse in his own right.
It's thoughtful in a way that so few webnovels, fanfics or otherwise, tend to be without (in this reader's opinion) getting bogged down in pointless filler.
Honestly, my only real complaint is that there's not more chapters to binge... as I post this at 2:36 am when I really should be sleeping. Yeah, it's one of those. - Magicperson1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great new fic. Most fics that do the whole turned into a Pokemon premise always feel cheap and low quality. This one feels well written and manages multiple simultaneous plot lines at once.
I feel like this fic has a lot of potential if the author doesn't drop it - MioenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0well written, introspektive soul-sertching, decent charakters and good consistent world-building. well worth a read and im genuinely sad it does not uppdate faster
do keep in mind that the MC is a ghost type, it shoud be rather obvius their previus life was not exaktly 100% perfekt and at least in the beginning their solution is basikly to not think abaut it and distract themselves - NanotrexsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book is really good. I generally do not like Pokemon that much but this book is just sooo good I'm actually considering watching it again. I like the main character and their reaction to the world around them. I enjoy the way things are explained and I'm not just expected to know or understand things. The behaviour of Pokemon is also more reasonable (though a little extreme) than most other books.
Great book, I'm looking forward to more chapters. - Redrover1760Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A phenomenal book written well. It is very unique and well written, with a well developed world applied excellently.
Pretty much everything about this book just feels so good, but I had to sit down and say something at least. I am really excited to see where this goes and how Charlie learns and develops their powers. - callmesteveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0But when I do, I read the Ranger's Shadow. Apologies to a certain beer commercial.
Unlike my throwaway line, this story is pretty unique. Of the others I have read, they're usually looking at a very humanlike pokemon or a SI who basically continues human-ing in a new environment (to the confusion of everyone else, not that that's a bad thing).
This one feels a lot more alien in how the pokemon perspective works while also feeling very organic. Also, this is the first one I've seen that goes with the Rangers of Almia instead of standard trainers.
I would totally take telekinesis over hands, just FYI.
