Improvisation and Magic Don't Mix (A Progression Fantasy)
Community Rating
Description
Ya like jazz? Ya like adventure and fantasy and bards learning awesome magic? Well do I have something for you!
In a world where bardic magic can backfire and blow up, most bards stick to carefully practiced pieces to make sure they still have a throat and fingers.
Most, is not all.
Meet Theo, a singer in The Pub in Union City, who has never been good with practicing, and prefers to make things up on the spot. Let's see how long he can go without visiting a healer.
Expect:
An interesting (yet still familiar) medieval fantasy setting
A vibrant magic system, with lots of interesting growth and progression
Human and imperfect characters who do their best
The Power of Friendship!
Sometimes chill vibes, sometimes exciting vibes, never bad vibes
A story that ultimately ends in a happy ending for most
Something that could be mistaken for wit
What this won't have:
Edgy MCs
Harems
Grimdark/trauma
Too many cliffhangers
Complete!

- AdmiralKhardbasovRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Is it bad that I didn't even have to read the cover image to audiate it?
I guess I gotta read this thing now, in stead of shedding like I should be.
Gordon Goodwin isn't going anywhere. Even if I wish he would.
Fender Mexican Jazz Bass out of 10
This opinion has been brought to you by Saxophone gang, the greatest of all gangs. - LegitBurrito112Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Glad I read it. It hooks you in and doesn't let go, evolving from a boy finding himself to a group and beyond, keeping it short and sweet not to spoil but it is absolutely worth the time, especially since it is complete with a heartwarming conclusion!
(Tiny note with no impact on reading: late on I feel like the classmates outside of the group disappear; no bearing on the story just woulda loved if the epilogue coulda had a bit more cast for me to remember after this journey, great stuff! :) - SaibotRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0For anyone interested in an interesting magic system, music or both, I definitely recommend you check this out.
Expect a slice of life story with some interesting plot happening on the side and very occasional action scenes.
What draws me into this story is the casual way it's written combined with very interesting world building. Reading this really feels like taking a look at life in a fantasy city, exploring music and magic alike. Don't go in expecting some action packed murder hobo story, you'll mainly just be vibing to our lovely boy Theo.
Also, you get free music recommendations at the end of each chapter and some occasional links within them as well, definitely worth checking those out too - akoimeexxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Excellent characters, with the lead character being one of my more favorite depictions in a long time.
This story is heartwarming and while things get tense near the end, it's all worth it.
My only disappointments with this is that it is completed and there are no other fictions by the author as of this review posting; and I cannot add this to a curated "Super Favorites" collection. - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I would say that this fiction needed more descriptions of what happened around the people rather than just hearing "You're crying." While it most certainly worked in the situation I am indirectly referencing, a overuse of it kinda killed the tension when reading. The world around the two doesn't seem like it exists. I want to know more! Characther development is great but more than that would be great as well. Grammar is fine btw. 4.5/5 for now. Might chance later. Not sure.
- DromerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5My only criticism is that it ended, as all things must.
Now I feel the familiar sense of satisfaction and loss and being lost?
As when one finishes a game and have to ponder what one must now do.
Kind of wish we had learnt more of the dryad.
Definitely wish the ending included Sparrow.
Still, my thanks. - vasillaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I liked most of the story and binge read it in two days. I even stayed late reading it so I give it 4 stars because few stories are so captivating.
My favorite part was exploring of warior and priest magic systems. I like DnD style settings. And out of all DnD stuff that I read it have just the right pacing to relex and enjoy DnD world . Or at least up until chapter 118. Then everything speeds up and quality suffers. I think if the story didn`t abruptly speed up it would have around 190-230 chapters instead of 144.
As it is I am dropping this. I know that there only 8 chapters left but Ichapters have been getting worse and worse and I don`t want to ruin my opinion about this story by forsing myselft to finish it. - JohnPlumeRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is essentially about the development of a DnD style Bard. The main character is able to use magic with the use of music. His physical abilities are being trained for melee combat. His charisma and social skills are being trained by interacting with unique individuals. And the core strength according to the mentor is flexibility. These traits/abilities feel like they are almost directly copied from an offical description of the bard class in a dungeons and dragons guide.
Do not get me wrong, this is not nececessarily a bad thing. In fact, I find it very intriguing to see the actual training that those fighting bards have to go through to reach the sterotypical image of the bard class. That journey and the various interesting training excersises that the author can come up with will be potentially fun to follow. Don't be afriad to have fun with the training as the more creative the training the more fun it is for the reader. The characters themselves also feel like real people as the mentor has a deep moment with Theo when he apologizes for not properly explaining himself/taking his opinion. However, recently, I can't help but feel like the author has almost slightly forgot the foundation for the character and to explore the world itself. The internal magic system makes sense and builds off itself quite easy. The internal magic system, the obstacle course, and the interacting with extreme personalities are logical places to start training. However, despite the logic, almost none of this involves anything to do with being a musician. Even the internal magic doesn't need music to activate so it feels like the music has been left by the wayside.
I could see another story which follows a pure fighter, not a bard, go through practically the exact same training. Developing internal magic, go on obstacle courses, and even just learn how to deal with people (ex. look at The test for Tigu in Beware of Chicken). Even in chapter 20, it almost feels like Theo almost in - gregarityRoyal Road★★ 2.0Good premise. Strong writing until about halfway through, when Sparrow leaves. The chapters get much shorter, progression stops happening. The MC becomes subject to an ancient prophecy, and proceeds to do jack about it, except
handing over knowledge of great power to the first authority figure he sees THREE SEPARATE TIMES.
Can't stand a main character who lets the story happen to themself without exercising hardly any agency. Maybe because we hate what we see in the mirror.
The author occasionally a few words, but you can usually out what they mean.
