Description

Every self-respecting basement dweller knows what to do when fictional monsters become real and people get the ability to level up. You figure out an overpowered build, you grind, you snowball, you become ridiculously powerful by abusing niche and seemingly useless skills. You focus on yourself and your own interests, giving token help to others when it strikes your fancy. You survive, you thrive, and you become a god. Dennis has other priorities. What to expect: - Beating hopelessness with overwhelming fervour, Gurren Lagann style.- Unhinged yet charismatic MC.- Absolutely unbalanced power system. FTL is on the plate.- Comedy grounded by reality. Sometimes things’ll get pretty dark.- Nah, I’d win. Updates M/F.

It's been such a long time since I've read a good unreliable first person narrative. It's pretty hard to pull off since the author has to write reverse dramatic irony: where the characters know more about the situation and the reader is left in suspense. So the author is forced to plan ahead and 'show' what the characters know and not 'tell' us as it was. The author also uses other tools (to build suspense); in this case we have the plot's mystery (the standard unique twist of system apocalypse), amazing characterization (mc with non-standard world view, tension with side characters' unique worldviews), and realism (where author is not shy of killing off characters or have the mc take injuries).
Grammar is better than most, less than perfect. In my case I'm so glad that peek is used correctly instead of peak.
I like how every character has a very unique voice.
Style wise i have no complaints; there are no verbose use of em dashes, and/or semi-colons. The basic period and comma combo with the sprinkling of punctuation and question marks is enough for me but people might disagree.
The story is peak. The exp, attributes, and skills systems are so unique, mc's mysterious past and why he is so psychopathic with heroic tendencies. The system apocalypse. The side characters which have not been explored (which i prefer, i love that the author focuses on the mc).
The action scenes are crazy good, but I had to suspend my disbelief at a katana not breaking after slicing off leather + meat + bone off of hundreds of opponents. But whatever, maybe the smith is just that good?
All in all I'm having a blast, and re-reading chapters that have the cool factor. Definitely recommend. In fact, I have recommended it to my 2 siblings but I'm not sure if they'll appreciate it 😔

while the style of writing itself is quite ok... what makes this story worthwhile is the characterization of the main character. if your looking for a sane mc with empathy this is not the book for you. the mc is batshit crazy! but this juxtaposes the tragic nature of a apocalyptic world leading to some genuinely funny moments.the system is also another thing i enjoyed about this book... it does not feel rigid... and has some interesting quirks i do not wish to spoil.the story is still in its infancy but it is quite entertaining and has some mentions of an over-arching plot.the writing is style is not memorable but nor does it feel like a hindrance.

This was absolute peak fiction. I genuinely loved every single second of the experience, and the writing quality is top-tier. I was able to understand the plot easily without any confusion, and the author’s insights were so helpful that they actually helped me gain 5 rep points. Truly incredible work!

The story is amazing and every plot-point Or thread that was made is always being progressed with or sometimes without the MC getting too involved. And the author does not lie when  he said it is a speedster story he is genuinely OP with him growing stronger with each level. It may not seem like it at first but after his 3rd level things start to get very fast;)
The characters are made with a great deal of thought by the author each having their own purpose. The character at the start is a bit annoying and he stays that way till chapter 30(but I did grow to love it by chapter 18 or 23 so it is not going to be too bad and he is not the only one that carries the show) or before that I think as he feels very much like a child even when he should be serious and no there is no sudden realization till that point it comes in a chapter a bit later but it does not give the MC a sudden turn of heart he just realizes his reasons for doing the things he has done were not as justified as he thought they were. It I very well executed
As for grammer I felt the words flow smoothly enough so no problem on my part and there were not that many corrections in the comments so that is great.
Finally the story is really good and the only thing I can nitpick on it is that we haven't gotten to much time with some of the characters but that would be fixed in later chapters I think.
Anyways with all that covered let me shamelessly beg for the author to post one or two more chapies as two chapters a week is too little for me😭. But if that does not happen or is not possible no worries as I would prefer quality of chapters over quantity 😁.

I’ve enjoyed my time with this one so far. The internal monologue can be slightly grating and goofy, let’s just say this character would freak anyone out in real life. You’d listen to him for one sentence, nod and try to put as much distance between each other as possible.
With all that said it works in his favour for this story. His commitment to his dream is endearing and serves as good common ground between himself and the audience. Then he opens his mouth and you want to kill him and yourself all over again.
I’ve enjoyed this one quite a bit more than I thought I might, combat is good, characters distinct and realish, and the system is definitely a cut above what you see on this site. I was surprised by how much depth was there and I look forward to what we get to see in the future.

This story has much to recommend it. A wonderfully comic-book-weebish protagonist with a unique personality, well-portrayed. An awesome unbalanced system that makes for incredibly fun story. A superpowered hero who isn't really OP, given his extreme limitations, allowing endless death-defying tension often missing from this genre. Soft-philosophizing in the vein of Conan the barbarian philosopher, except from a speedster-hero-obsessed nerd point of view. Great side characters and their own amazingly unbalanced powers with equally strong downsides.
The style is amazing, taking system apocalypse LitRPG to a unique place, very different from the "regular joe makes good" stories. The story is deeply enjoyable so far with a unique, softly philosophical take on a system, tons of adventure, and great character and scenario development. The grammar is shockingly good considering it's a non-native English speaker who learned from Doctor Who--of course, I'm reviewing after the Rising Stars explosion, when the author got a whole lot of grammar fix suggestions. Still, an author who carefully edits and fixed grammatical issues after the fact bodes very well for this story. And finally, the characters are full of sheer awesomeness.
Of all #1 Rising Star stories I've read, this one has got to be my favorite. I hope the story goes good places from here.

Honestly I’ve always loved the thought of writing a story where all the character cared about is speed and the writing is done in a way it’s like seeing a dream come true. The main character is a bit odd but he feels real. Excited to see more as the story progresses.

Imma be a Speedster, as you can probably tell from the title, knows exactly what it's trying to do. The MC is singleminded in wanting to be a speedster and a hero-onlybeing a speedster and a hero- without having the typical 'spirit' of one, I suppose. Not at all. Dennis has a complete lack of empathy, a near inability to understand how most other people think, and the longterm planning ability of a child. His moral compass is essentially just 'is this something a hero would do' without the underlying reasons forwhya hero does any of those things. It subsequently doesn't apply to things that heroes don't typically do in superhero media. He doesn't really treat people decently, he thinks of other people as NPCs to be saved at best, etc etc.  He's not a hero beyond the surface level, and franklyhe's failing at that too. It's like he's a kid aping his favorite characters like it's a halloween party, only it's the apocalypse and he's trying to be a superhero. It's so funny, go read it.Aside from that, the system is way more conceptual than hard, and it allows for more wiggle room than typical system stories do, so that's fun.ANYWAY.STYLE: 5/5I always have no idea what to write when rating style, so I'll just say that I liked it. Pacing's good, format's good, everything's good.GRAMMAR: 5/5Got no complaints here. I either didn't notice any errors or they were so minor that I immediately forgot them.STORY: 4.5/5Can't really say much because it's still fairly early on, but I've got no complaints. I can't really tell where it's going to go yet so that's why it's a 4.5, but for now, I'm still interested.CHARACTER: 5/5Chef's kiss, best part of the story. I already mentioned Dennis at the top, but everyone else is also done very well. No one is stupid for no reason, everyone feels like a person. It contrasts that much more to Dennis, who is very much the abnormal one in this situation. We only have two POVs from people other than Dennis as of the time I'm writing this (I think?)

Guys give this story a chance please. Make it to chapter 20 and you will see this goes deeper then just another “apocalypse system based novel” I won’t give you any spoilers but it’s sad, pay attention to the skills Dennis is being offered, they hold so much more meaning then you think…
