I Will Touch the Skies - A Pokemon Fanfiction
Community Rating
Description
Grace Pastel is a young girl who lives a cozy life in Jubilife city with her father, and for her, Pokemon battles are just something that she watches on television or online. Entertainment to be seen at a distance. After turning fifteen, she watched as young people her age got ready for their first journey across Sinnoh, all aiming to become the Champion. She usually scoffed at them, wondering how one could throw away a comfortable life in the city to risk their lives in the wild for an unobtainable goal. And yet when she was asked by her father to deliver a package to her mother living two towns over, something clicked in her brain.
Suddenly, she decided that she wanted to be the very best.

Two chapters a week on Wednesdays and Sundays, from July 3rd
Warning: this is a slow story, there is a romantic subplot, and the tags + content warnings are there for a reason. This story isnotactually grimdark, but do not expect something out of the anime. Nobledark would be a more accurate tag that RR does not have, and it is still the darkest large Pokemon fic on the site.

- NickomaniaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story feels like a good beginning for a Pokémon fanfic. I enjoy that our main character's, Grace, starting Pokémon isn't a typical "starter" Pokémon nor is it a Lucario/Gardevoir/dragon-type. She's beginning her journey from the start with her literal baby Pokémon and we get to travel along with them as they take their first steps.
Grace's reaction to getting the battle high is relatable to anyone who ever gets that rush of adrenaline from doing something new. Getting up on stage and delivering your lines for the first time, cliff jumping, sprinting as hard as you can to beat your opponent in a race that last 100 meters and getting that runner's high. A nerve-wracking experience, but so exhilarating at the same time.
Plus, we get a glimpse into the life of Grace's family. It's not a happy-go-lucky family where everything is handed to her. There's some drama and tension, just like any normal family has, making this story feel more relatable and real.
Take what you will from this, but I have high hopes for this story. The grammar is good and the dialogue is smooth, not feeling forced like some stories have. Can't wait to see what's in store for our heroine and what her Pokémon journey will be like! - Pawn315Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I Will Touch the Skies is an outstanding piece of fanfiction. While the label of "fanfiction" is true, it can sometimes carry baggage that this does not deserve. I have read traditionally published original work that lacks the quality of world-building, character writing, and plot direction this features.
This is a wonderfully written story with engaging characters. The author, Soussouni, has managed to churn out high quality work at a regular rate of a chapter a day maintaining a plot progression with good pace. Things rarely feel like filler, nor is it at a breakneck pace.
There are things that I can and will complain about, but I want to be clear that these are not objective negatives. Anything I've found myself wanting to complain about has only to do with my personal taste in stories or pokemon fanfiction in particular.
For instance, the Grimdark tag is accurate at times. I don't really prefer grimdark things on the whole and specifically here I feel it is a strange fit for Pokemon, which is meant to be a children's IP. However that is entirely a matter of preference and even then, for the most part it is handled in such a way that it is not egregious. It is not grimdark for the sake of being grimdark. The story has built a world where Pokemon have a certain level of power and danger and then the story lets actions have consequences. Some of those reasonably occuring consequences happen to be grimdark. Is that what I'm here for or what I personally want to see from a Pokemon fanfic? No. Does it in any way actually make the story or writing itself worse? No, definitely not.
I feel similarly about the power scaling. The pokemon are stronger than my personal preference, but it doesn't detract from the story and is, in fact, necessary for the story the author is telling. It isn't bad by any means. It is simply a matter of preference.
The closest I can get to an actual critique is some of the interludes. I really enjoy the interludes of the Gym Leaders and the Forum - DarudaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read the story up to chapter 265, and I must say it's been a journey. The darker tone of the narrative adds a sense of relatability that's quite interesting. The new lore introduced in the story surpasses the original canon in my opinion.
One noteworthy aspect of the tale is the skillful character development. The characters are multi-faceted and leave a lasting impact. I've noticed a steady improvement in the narrative quality, with a significant leap in depth around the Eterna.
The relationships portrayed in the story, whether they are friendly or romantic, feel genuine and believable. The dynamics between the characters are thoughtfully crafted, enhancing the overall immersion.
One peculiar observation is the prevalence of LGBTQ+ representation among the main characters.
The inclusion of alternate POV chapters was a delightful surprise. I typically have reservations about such shifts, but in this case, they were seamlessly integrated, expanding the story world without disrupting overall immersion.
In summary, I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've read so far. - E.T.LEERoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has been updating daily for this many chapters and remains banger, but you've probably heard that about a few things on this site. What I think I Will Touch The Skies does different, though, relates to the post-binge experience. I'm caught up and still find myself checking daily - this is because in each chapter stuff happens and then resolves. If other serial web fiction has gotten you down due to the small amount of per-chapter content, IWTTS is here for you. Every chapter ends on a note of satisfying resolution that leaves you hungering for more, instead of depending on the artifical hook of a cliff-hanger every chap. You read because you love the story. You stay because it respects your time.
I knew I was going to love this aspect of the story when every one of the climactic gym battles, which I had been conditioned to expect being broken into chunks, were posted all at once. No bullshit here. You love to see it. - ratman71111Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0sous is just an insane writer. it amazes me how she can keep track of all the worldbuilding, characters, character dynamics, side stories, and other things she has in this fic.
my favorite part of this is the politics, funnily enough. I'm usually not one for politics, but in this fic, sous expands on them so that everything feels a lot more real and each action has a consequence. it truly feels like a real version of pokemon.
thank you sous, for this insane and amazing fic. - TitanioRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is very good, its not groundbreaking or anything like that, its a story about a young girl journey with his pokemons.
It conveys very well the ups and downs of the world of pokemon without being scared of showing the very dark points of the pokemon world like showing how dangerous some pokemons can be for the young trainers starting their firs journey.
Other thing that i really like is how it explores the inner workings of the pokemon world and society. Like how pokemon centers and the pokemon league works.
In a nutshell, is not a groundbraking story but what it has done is very enjoyable to read - IgneasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I follow quite a few Pokemon fanfics, both on Royal Road and on other platforms and honest to god I think I Will Touch the Skies is right now my favourite of all of them.
The story is overall very well written and thought out, the style is clean and concise and you can always follow what the author wants to portray well, there is no unnecessary prose or over the top imagining and its done well enough to keep you focused on what's important in the story.
And man the important parts of the story are REALLY well done, the interactions between the characters, both human and pokemon are very very enjoyable and I think its a really good part of what makes the story shine, they are consistent with what the author has told us about the characters, they develop well and they go through well thought out arcs and progression, there is teenage romance and relationships but they don't take over the story they just help it bring it along.
The pokemon lore, world and everything that surrounds it is also very well characterized, even if the world is quite a bit darker than its normally portrayed in the pokemon franchise I think its well developed and explained by the author and while there are parts that are dark there are also others which bring happy feelings.
Lastly the pokemon battles, a lot of the time I don't like how some fanfics portray battles but Soussoni does a great job at writting these, we are told each trainer has a defined style and you can actually feel and see this in the way the battles are written and developed, its the final touch that brings this fanfic to the skies and makes it soar over many others, atleast in my opinion.
Hope these review helps those of you undecided on if you should start reading this series, in my opinion if you like pokemon fanfic you are missing out if you aren't reading this one. - Salvodoc99Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've never been a fan of pokemon fiction.
There's always been something that made them very fake, like when you add a system or the protagonist with a pikachu can knock down a lugia or something similar.
This instead? This is perfect simplicity! There is no Golden finger, no pokemon extra strong from the beginning. All she has is for her hard work.
But she's not only the hard-working protagonist, she also seems alive. A real person! The other characters as well, the pokemon and even the canon fodder, everything looks damn alive!
I only discovered it three days ago and in three days I read all the chapters! really beautiful, congratulations! - KalashRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is my first review, so bear with me. Before tackling anything else, I want to say that this fanfic has a lot of potential and is among the best I've read (so far!), although it isn't my favorite yet. I also want to thank the author for the insane upload consistency they've shown so far. Anyway, let's go on to the review.
Style: The way the story is told is simple but effective. Sure it's not the best narration you'll ever see, but at least it's consistent (I don't like it when authors randomly add complicated words out of left field), and it's slowly getting better as the story progresses. Right now, I'd give it a 4.5, but if the author keeps getting better, I'd give it a five.
Grammar: From what I've seen in the comments, the author sometimes has typos but fixes them instantly, and I personally haven't caught anything yet. The writing is smooth and I always understand what is being said. 5/5
Story: Now, let's get to the meat of the review. The story here is clearly being set up toward something grander, 4.5/5. There are two axes to the story:
First, you have the classic wanting to gather the eight gym badges and become the champion, but this has more depth to it than I expected. The world itself feels incredibly real, and the author shows us snippets of the bureaucratic work that goes toward running the 'League Circuit', as it is called in the story, but it's never too invasive or immersion breaking because in my opinion, just the right amount is shown/talked about because we see it through the eyes of someone going through the system. This means that we aren't overwhelmed with info dumping, but the information we get is great.
The second axis of the story hasn't been explored much yet, and it has to do with team Galactic. Now, I'll be honest, Pokemon Platinum is my favorite game and team Galatic is my favorite evil team, so I might be biased, but I'm super excited to see how the author writes them. If they manage to do it well (like they've been doing so far) - KristroffRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story opened my eyes to how good fanfic can be when done well. Ive always thought of most fanfics as derivative self insert but this story proves that in the hands of a skilled author it can be something magical.
The story offers a trully unique take on the pokemon world. It takes the source material and expands upon it in a way that is both natural and interesting. The darker tone strikes a perfect ballance between geneting real stakes without being too oppressive.
With that being said the best part is definitely the characters. Both pokemon and trainers have real depth and a sense of character progression which means they only get better and more complex the further the story progresses.
The battles are well done, easy to follow and have good tactical depth. The author clearly was still finding his feet with the first ones but the most recent fights are all excellent.
Chapters have a good lenght and the releases are incredible consistent in both quality and time.
If it seems like im gushing a bit then yeah i kinda am. This is the one story where im impatiently waiting refreshing the page everytime a new chapter is about to drop. It's my favorite running story on the site and definitely top 3 of all time!
Tldr: cant recommend it enogh go read it
