Reading Stephenson requires a thesaurus on hand and a gin and tonic on the side. This is a light novel. I have turned off my brain, and have been very happy since my self-imposed lobotomy.
For a light novel, this has a very light style. It's easy to read. Goes down like room-temperature water. While I personally prefer waterboarding via wit and words I don't understand, I can understand what the author is going for — and they did it well. Grammar is good for the same.
As for the story and character, well, the label informs of you of everything you need to know. A young rough-rider cop (who, coming somebody who used to work with cops, has no idea how police-work works) has tea with a demon lord, then immediately decides to not do that. It's light-hearted, it's fun, and at the time of reading, there's not much else to the story so far. Characters have some decent personality so far, but again, there isn't much to go by just yet.
I am an asshole who unironically enjoyed Cryptonomicon, so my opinions are worth very little. But alas, this is a light novel. I know how to enjoy light novels.
At least you're not a vending machine.
