Ava Longwood has always yearned for adventure, so when she's offered the chance to join a team of spacefaring pioneers on a mission to colonise a distant world, she eagerly accepts. But her true purpose is far more personal - to track down her father, who was last seen on a mission to this same planet seven years ago. At first, Ava is thrilled, but elation soon turns to horror when she realises there is more to this world than meets the eye.
As Ava and the rest of the crew delve deeper into the secrets of the planet, they discover that it holds the secrets to a powerful ancient artifact, one that could alter the balance of power in the entire galaxy. However, they are not the only ones searching for it, and soon find themselves in a deadly race against rival factions who will stop at nothing to secure the artifact for themselves.
When danger mounts, Ava must use her cunning, skills, and newfound allies to survive.

- M.G DriverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The best part of the novel was the clear attention to detail. I never once felt that something was so completely unrealistic that it shook me from the immersion (or fantasizing like I was an explorer myself)
The start also showed that he did not shy away from the more pressing mental issues that comes with humanity being trapped on a station while having to contend with losing their loved ones. This gives me hope for a deeper trek in future chapters, and Ava and her colleagues already start to show signs of that.
Style:
Great style, a character-driven narrative interseeded with bits of world-building lore.
The descriptive style of some of the technology really scratch the itch I've had personally when reading sci-fi novel, where there should be a greater emphasis on how the technology actually functioned. The explanation of the blaster is a great example of this.
Story:
No issues with the plot so far. While the pacing of the chapters is fast in terms of time (e.g years occuring over a chapter), you still feel like you're closely following the MC, observing the points that fleshed out who she is.
The timeline in which the other parties moved to investigate the planet was extremely plausible as well given the world-setting, so no issues there as well.
As for the main driving force for why our MC is doing all of these, I only fear for the worst outcome (cynical, I know) and that makes it even more thrilling.
Grammar:
Smooth sleek english. I'm not a native speaker, but great read with no major hiccups.
Character:
There's not been a lot of time for the characters to develop, but I can already see the seeds of future conflict. Already there's some foreshadowing to the way social interaction will happen at least between the ladies, and I'm sure their exploration on the planet will only exacerbate those relationships or bring them to the surface.
Overall, the story is shaping up to be an absolutely exciting read, can't wait to explore alongside our main character! I've been - kanundraRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I admit – it has been a while since I’ve read anything here for SF which is why I asked. Originally I started out with SF on here, many moons ago. Thoughts as I read through and overall stuff later.
I hope you can take something from it in regards to keeping going and learning. *even I learn* all the time. And you’ve already helped me there too.
Opening -
I like Ava already, her position, her hope. Her father has left them and even after 2 years she’s hoping for his return. Why I’m of course just thinking she’s a daddys’ girl, but maybe there’s just a bit more to their relationship, quality than that. *at least as a trope* I’m hoping.
The Echo Cloud, interesting : ) and a great way to add in some extra tech. I’m holding out hope with Ava that it might be her father.
So, it really is her fathers ship… the CC ugh… I know this is going to go badly, she’s 13?
“Where’s my dad?” Ava didn’t leave her mother’s side, but she did let go of her arm.
Yeah ouch…. That sucks.
Maxim Heart, wanting to talk to them as soon as they emerge from decontamination is okay, the crowd there wanting answers, I can see that.
But it is very much in public, not too sure they’d actually allow it.
Is her father dead, is the wife…. So many questions. I get their frustration. But murder in front of everyone? Eeep. That takes a lot more than just frustration, desperation, sickness, anger at them for hiding it, especially as he’d been asking time and again it seems over them, and now they knew. Horrid. I’m almost glad he did do this.
Almost want you to cut this line, so I can learn go through it myself. Seems just a bit over the tops.
Five years later, she still didn’t know, but she was soon about to find out.
Then chapter 2 comes and I understand it. The goodbye to her sick mother is really hard. you got me there, I almost want a bit more regret from her, or something, but it’s still very well handled. Sometimes you have to go where you have to go no matter what’s going on at home.
10 in her cr - TJJonesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wanted to leave an advanced review here because there's a lot of good to talk about.
Style: This, for me, is where the story really shined. It's extremely well written. The author's use of vocabulary and depth landed extremely well with me. It didn't feel like the prose of a book written by someone off the internet. It felt like something I'd expect to find buried in a thick small paperback I picked up in a bookstore (you know the type, one of those that smells like musty paper, nostalgia and stories waiting to take you with them).
Grammar: There isn't much to say here. As with the style, the grammar is extremely sharp and on point. There weren't any instances of transposed words or clumsy wording. The structure was sound and sufficient to carry the reader through.
Story: At the time of review there isn't much to the story yet, so I couldn't fully or grade it for what it could become. At current it has a good start. While it's not my kind of story, I can still appreciate what it has and where it's going.
Character: The MC Ava has her motivations, and you get enough of what makes those motivations work and why. When coupled with how well the words are crafted, it really makes things pop.
Overall: What's here is good. If you're looking for something that doesn't lean hard into violence or explosions to start off, this would be well worth the time invested. Not exactly my cup of tea, but by no means a lesser story for it. Give it the time if your reading list is empty if nothing else. - James Hugo YavinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Gave this another read and found even more to appreciate, which bodes well. I found myself asking the following questions: What makes a hero? Who should be the protagonist? Do bookns really need to be about heroes? What makes a story relevant? Well, this author answered every one of those questions in their first chapter. A hero is someone who speaks up, but also someone who learns, endures and believes, like Ava. Does a book need to be about a hero? No, absolutely not. And while Ava might end up becoming one, for now she's just a young girl who misses her dad. And that's what makes a story relevant, it contains emotional truths that we can connect with. Already this book is a cut above the majority of the work we see on RR, in that it's not a tropy, genre focused donation grab. It's a real story, and it's worthy of our attention.
Below is my orginal review which was after a more cursory reeding.
First thing that grabbed me was the title. it's very dramatic, smartly worded, and gives the sort of detail that raises questions. A very good hook. The synopsis was a bit wordy. I prefer those say as little as possible and give more of a thematic impression that further lures me in, rather than provide literal detail, but that's a subjective point. I like the premise, I like the atmosphere, I like the feel, and it's worded well. Lots of promise here. Looking forward to more chapters! - Lara Zanatti ReisRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Chapter One surprises us with a very flow narrative, very similar to classic sci-fi. The tone, description and imagery are what we expect from good sci-fi novels. What kept me reading was two points:
- the fantastic emotional description. With mastery use of "Don't Tell, show!"
- And the author kept us glued with the question, "where are they?"
Chapter Two - We are served with more description of the world and the new world discovery, Zurn 852, once again, amazing imagery.
I loved the common sci-fi language easy to be understood by any sci-fi fan. (standard technical terms).
In conclusion, thanks to the sun, the narrative is very faithful to most space-SciFi, keeping a very natural tone to its storytelling. Reading this novel feels like butter.
The story is still at its very beginning and already keeps us hooked.
I definitely recommend it. 5/5
Note: No cons to point out. - EverseasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I enjoyed reading the first chapter of this story and the premise it sets up shows that this might be one outstanding read.
The universe that the author created seems very interesting and it would be great to be able to explore it further.
Also, this story has a lot of possibilities since there are a lot of different ways that this story can go, and that makes it exciting for me.
I hope my review motivates the author to continue writing and developing his universe even more. It would be great to see where he takes us and all the new tech that he comes up with. - M.D. WellsRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I have to say that reading the first two chapters of this novel really drew me in. I started with the synopsis to get a feel for the novel and boom I was ready to read. Its really well done. It lays out the general plot without giving too much away and is short and to the point without being not enough to go on.
At first I was only going to read the first one just to get a feel for it but I couldn't put it down after that first chapter.
Even now, I need to go to bed for work tomorrow but I HAVE to leave this review because this novel is very promising! I love space novels and this one seems really well researched, really well thought out and very interesting.
It seems like its going to be a slow burn and I love that gives me lots of time to get invested in the story and its characters. Ava is desperately hoping her father is going to return and I can feel her anticipation and longing through the authors words. I wont give too much away here since you have GOT to read it for yourself but trust me you wont be missing out.
For style, I have to give it 5 stars. The writing is buttery and smooth, and isn't hard to keep track of at all. The flow will definitely keep me coming back for more.
For story, 5 stars! I love space novels and with one as well written as this I can't help but give it full marks. Let's not forget how well the world is built up around the characters too! Research was done I'm positive of that!
The grammar is spot on too, earning that 5 star rating. I didn't notice any glaring issues that would have been something to question. No little hiccups here folks! Everyone makes mistakes sure, but I'm very pleased that this was coherent and unquestionable. The dialogue is well done which is a challenge for a lot of authors myself included!
Lastly, the characters. Ava is inquisitive and likeable from the jump. I can feel her longing for her father without it being unbelievable or pushed too intensely. To that end I offer up a humble 4 stars with the expectatio - FooBarTrixieBellRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A slow ramp up, interesting premise but a little odd. I'm still not sure why terraforming a planet with existing hostile life would be better than finding something lifeless in the Goldilocks zone. The main character's motivation seems a little far fetched. I would understand wanting to find out what happened but the belief he may be alive seems overly hopeful, if the intent is to have him be alive I would almost suggest this would be better used as a plot twist.
The characters often seem actively ascerbic towards each other, even the friendly ones seem a bit... bitchy?
Otherwise, I like the writing style, very descriptive and lots of good world building, the recent chapters have been faster paced and I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes. - A. StargazerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I was impressed by this story. The author does an impressive job of world-building a post-earth society looking for a new home. The author has obviously put a lot of thought into buiding this story.
The first chapter in particular I found gripping. It really sucked me in to read about Ava's father and the return of the Crimson Collective. And the aftermath of their return was very exciting.
The author's writing style is very descriptive and detailed. They do a great job of illustrating this strange new world. But honestly, it's the space colony scenes which I thought were particularly well done.
Gramatically I saw exactly one issue in my reading. That's it. One. And it was a minor one.
The story is a banger. Space colonization in a future where earth is uninhabitable for (reasons). A daughter who wants to reunite with her father, who is missing. Add a bit of survival and hostile alien life, and you have yourself a great mix.
The characters are unique and believable, for the most part. There is an event which I will not spoil, and the reaction to the event detracts from the believability of several of the characters and setting significantly.
I'm only detracting half a star from the overall score because there were a few things which broke through the suspension of disbelief.
* There's too much handwavium going on for hard sci-fi, which is what the story is currently labeled as. This is a minor detail and I'm not upset about it, as the author seems inclined to change the tag to soft sci-fi in the near future. (It's not the space flight or the FTL I have issues with; it's the free transmutation and the weapons which seem to come from video games).
* I don't think that the colony is militaristic enough. While not everyone on the ground would be a soldier, they would all be subject to martial law. The Author makes some attempts to reflect this reality, but there are several scenes which fail to hold water in my opinion. This goes hand in hand with the - jjhuttoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5First of all, I.W.T.E.A is easy to read. The characters are not echo chambers of the MC's voice, but rather each one seems to have their own strong opinions and motivations that I found easy to love or hate.
Thats the thing about this narrative... It evokes, something I think all good writing should do. whether its the MC's dream of finding her father or Sybil's diatribe on consipacies being played out across the galaxy, these things make me feel.
So I deffinitely recomend, and the only reaso Im not giving it 5.0 is that some of the logistical set up of the military and base seemed to not be as logical as I would expect from this genre.
Also, no one believes the 5 star ratings. So there you go, thats what I think.
