I, Criminal Mastermind!
Community Rating
Description
Fame! Fortune! Powers! You name it, Metas can have it in less than what it takes you to spell their name. You just need a System and bam! You're swinging sky-crappers around and kicking villain (or Hero) asses, with the medias licking your boots and your excessively cringeful name going down on history, for better or for worse.
Oh, but there's a catch. You have to be the lucky one in two thousand.
Lawrence is as far from lucky as one can be. He's no Meta. He can't spit freezing fire from his mouth, summon adorable monstrosities or make people hallucinate with his eyes. He is nothing but a freelance programmer, one whose life has been full of boredom and luck (i.e. lack thereof). He couldn't care less about the world of superpowers, as long as it stay away from his life...
But of course, that's not going to happen...
BE WARNED!!!This is a parody on the supervillain sub-genre, with a lot of dad jokes, bad puns and a knack for ridiculousness. So expect lots of that. Oh, and cookies. Can't forget the cookies!
Story really starts boiling around 15-20 chapters so stick around and see before making a judgement. Please?

- D.J. RintoulRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is great fun.
We follow a somewhat normal person who is semi-randomly selected to become a superpowered being. And instead of observing him conquer the world or something along those lines, thus far, he has gone out for snacks, broken his back carrying an old lady's groceries, lost his wallet, and yelled at the walls of his apartment (not in that order). This is a very funny take on the superhero (and supervillain) genre, and although the first handful of chapters or so are relatively uneventful (almost slice of life in style), those chapters have also been very entertaining. Slice of life style only works with good characters. But the author has really gotten the main character right, and that is more than enough, in my opinion, to justify a slightly slow-burn start.
I can only imagine what heights the story will reach once the protagonist's villainy will begin, and I am very interested in staying tuned.
The only major fault I see in this work is the grammar, which features a significant number of mistakes, odd word choices, etc. It wasn't a big enough deal to keep me from enjoying the work, though. Just something that we readers need to help the author with, I think, unless he decides to pay for a professional editor. The story is worth dealing with that.
The only negative I have on the story is that the Prologue is the least interesting part of it. I can see why the author included it, but it could have been half the length and still conveyed the same information, without spending as much time showing the god of this universe playing around in his own dimension. I suspect that some readers will probably see the Prologue and stop reading before they get to the interesting parts of the story, which is a shame, because even the very next chapter is a big step up with a more interesting character. - GlassSpidersRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'd like new readers to be aware that the author took all the feedback given and rewrote the first two volumes pretty much entirely. Like complete rehaul and it turned it from a fun but hard to follow chaotic romp into a very fun easy read. Even in the rewrite the improvements in between the first chapter and the end of volume 1 as the writer gets better are pretty obvious. Plot events are filled out, characters have more personality , motives and justification for actions. There are in fact more side characters which also makes it all more 3-D and helps me keep up my suspension of disbelief. The writer gets better at showing and not telling.
The actual story is a fun chaotic superhero/villain story where we get system tropes and snarky justification for in world concepts. Also characters who really probably don't count a sane for us but match their environment perfectly. It probably if it was on AO3 would be tagged as "crack taken seriously" and would be the best kind of this type of writing. - HotChickenCheeriosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I, Criminal Mastermind sets itself up quickly as a fast-paced and fun-filled action-packed journey. The story is very fun with how the events play out and the system has interesting mechanics and is used sparingly, which I much prefer over the overuse of systems that's a trend.
The characters are dynamic, and Lawrence is a compelling protagonist who makes the journey interesting.
There's nothing groundbreaking, but the story ticks all marks when it comes to being fun. I enjoyed every second and will keep enjoying it for a while to come. A big thumbs up from me! - Pirate-CaptainRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A nice little story that really plays well on cliches and you will have a fun time reading the chapters are frequently posted and theirs always a nice twist. Thank you to the author for entertaining us with this nice beautiful story. I have a wonderful time reading this book.
- TharsultRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So, overall I really liked this quite a bit. For the most part its a fun little romp through a semi-serious supervillain origin story, played more for comedic fun than anything. But beneath that is a well-designed story that follows a sort of anime version superhero/supervillain/antihero story.
Honestly, the title here really sums up my thoughts quite well, but I'll go deeper here for the sake of the review.
Style: Quite solid. A well-maintained tone and writing style, traditional but done well. Very little to write about but that's usually very good in this category imo--if I'm noticing the style significantly as I try and get lost in the story, either you are a genius or (far more likely) you screwed up. No screw up here at all--the style is fine and lets me enjoy the rest of it.
Grammer: This is where I take exception to this otherwise excellent story. Sentence structure is fine, punctuation is fine except for useless but formally official punctuation at the end of quotes that's frequently missing, things of that nature are all fine. But god the typos. So many typos. I'm known in our writers critique group as the one that doesn't even see/pick up on typos, but they were getting to even me. The author tries to be funny about it in his authors notes (and I laughed at them once or twice I won't deny), but the truth is -- the author knows it's a problem and this story needs a copy editor more than anything else at all imo. If "Typos" was the category this would be a 2 star at best, but since its grammer in general and the rest is all fine, I'm just gonna knock a star off here and move on. Grammer is the least important category to me so I'm not dinging the overall score.
Story: This is the best part. The story combines "basic story we've seen before" with "just enough cool and new elements" that I'm having a ton of fun. The status chart portion and quests are also very interesting. I haven't gotten far enough yet to see the complexity, but I can see the method of gai - FireballchargingRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Disclaimer: This was written for a review swap.
The story is written in a unique style, to say the least. At first, it was a little off-putting, but as I read more of it, I found myself enjoying the style. The story itself is, so far, fairly slow as it seems to be doing a lot of setup, but I find myself liking the direction it's heading in. I liked the idea that while it is LitRPG, it takes the approach of only certain people can interact with a 'system' which is a concept I enjoyed. If you want something that doesn't take itself too seriously then I would recommend reading I, Criminal Mastermind! - Keyboard AddictRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I have an appreciatation for peoples inspiration, and that weighs heavily on the score, because I think the author had some things to say.
I think the inspiration here was the author's humorous look at a modern day to day lifestyle, kind of like a satire of the videogame infused lives so many young people live. And I loved the idea behind this story. I see the sense of humor in it. I think I get what they're trying to do here.
It's worth a read just to take in the commentary, in my opinion. There's a lot of day to day life stuff in the first couple of chapters, but that's all part of the commentary. If you're looking for instant action... I say slow down a bit. It's coming. Read, observe the character, enjoy. That said, for old boring people like me, the metropolitan gamer existence has kind of worn thin, so I had to take a point...but that's just based on my own personal preferences. If you're a young gamer living the programmer life, this is clearly your story!
So the author admits that there are grammar mistakes. None of them are glaring, and only one or two actually stood out, the rest I caught because the author told me to in the note.....LOL. - Wyatt_WriotsRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is for a review swap, but I am 100% up and front honest about this review. Reviewed up until Chapter 3.
Overall: 4/5
What's really holding this story back right now is Style and Grammar. The author has said it themselves that their native language is not English, so it's really hard to judge the, for not having perfect syntax. However, nontheless, it can be distracting.
Style: 4/5
I like what I'm reading so far, and I really enjoy getting the headdives from the MC who seems to have a lot of personality.
Story: 4.5
Interesting premise. Love the MC's ability and can't wait to know more about it.
Grammar Score: 3.5
Needs the most imporvement, but, again, non-native English speaker. I suggest Prowritingaid if you can afford it.
Character Score: 5.0
MC seems fun, nonchalant kinda guy who just goes with the flow. I like it. Too many stories nowadays are serious serious serious all the time, with brooding MC's to boot. He's the kinda guy who simultaniously doesn't give a crap, but, countrary to that, still has a conscience. What I'm trying to say is that the MC is different, and that alone makes it a 5/5.
Goodjob author, keep going and keep working on your grammar. English is dumb, I know. - kendollguyRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0A very quick-paced story with an interesting premise. You will find yourself quickly reading the chapters, expecting more. The story is fun, and the protagonist is compelling. I felt disconnected from the worldbuilding, feeling lacking overall from the adventure. I find myself convoluted sometimes in reading this book and I am lost in the plot’s inconsistencies and holes.
The writing is very simple and easy, with a very informal feel to it as if you're in the story. The chapters are short, leaving much to be desired. I found myself bored at times when I read the story, having to skip ahead because of the prolonged conversation points of no substance. The grammar is very simple, so many audiences can read this with ease.
There's a lot of potential in this story and in its development, and if you're interested in an easy story about superpowers and an interesting take on the hero's journey motif, then I suggest taking a read. - TheGreatGazpachoRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5[Review Swap]
The narrative is very off-beat, and at times, I found it hard to follow. I feel that the humor and the story the author wants to tell don't mesh well. I thought that the premise of the story was interesting; it reminds me of certain elements of anime, like My Hero Academia. I'm not well-versed in LitRPG fiction, so I don't know how well the system will blend with the story in the long run.
I wish I had more constructive stuff to add, I had a fairly neutral reaction to the story, but it's clear that the author enjoys the story that they're telling, and that counts for a good bit.
