Description
Valerie has everything a hero could ever need: immense power, unwavering resolve, and the will to do whatever it takes to get the job done. But she’s not doing it for fame, justice, or even the thrill—she’s doing it for money, to help her struggling dad and give him a better life. When Valerie enters Astoria’s most prestigious superhero college, she quickly finds herself at odds with the modern hero philosophy: “We protect life, not end it.” For Valerie, this code feels frustratingly soft in the face of dangerous villains who deserve no mercy.
Her uncompromising approach and ideas of systemic change set her apart from her peers, who see her methods as a step too far. In a world where heroes are tasked with preserving the status quo rather than creating lasting change, Valerie stands out as a controversial figure, challenging everything a “hero” is supposed to represent. But with her unyielding stance, she’s seen as a threat, someone teetering on the line between hero and villain.
As the lines blur, Valerie must decide: is she fighting for justice, for money, or something else entirely? And if she can’t change her ways, how far will she go before society labels her a villain?

- PeppermancerRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Based on the synopsis I was expecting a book about a Luigi Mangione-esque character in a superhero world, or a philosophical dive into what is morality and how does violence play into that in society. What I was not expecting was for there to be literal gods and a magic system that automatically determines evilness (somehow). It's not BAD per say, a little rushed and slapdash for my taste, but with some fun ideas and okay execution. It just wasn't what I was hoping to read. It feels like the story is being pulled in too many directions, and while what I was expecting to read is technically part of it, the rest of it clashes. I'm not saying it can't be multiple genres, but I don't think it can be a satirical comedy about the justice system AND slice of life AND have trope-y superhero stuff AND have heavy dramatic action AND dark tidings in the shadows AND epic overarching plot. It's like two books that would be great on their own got squished together, even the main character feels split between sociopath demigod who loves murder and empathetic college girl who's mad at the system. Like I really want to read both books, but instead I am forced to read a mashup of the two. I think if it was focused more rather than trying to be a bit of everything, I would have been willing to read more.
