- nusan_walenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Hi
Hydra And The Heroes' Shadow is simple story where main character is no 'summoned to be hero' but 'summoned to be baby-sitter of hero and heroiness' what is quite fresh compared to many stories.
Mc is summoned human male that does posses some information in his head about this world because of the godddesess as well as some skills that are mean to help him in his mision (no, no skills that are overpowered at the start or ones that make Mc strong) thanks to this, we have a nice view of the world from commoner view and no bulshit of 'you are the chosen one' or 'knows nothing about common sense so he build city in 1 day'
other characters are nice, I won't say anything too much about relationships in this story besides the fact that for now it seems to methat hero and heroiness didn't fall in love because they saw one another so a +(lol) for this.
only critique that i have right now is Mc forgets about his mission,Mc getts sleepy easly and goddesses seem not to like babies for some reason(a joke ,but seriosly kaname did you really had to say what you did say at the first meeting?). - Psycho_Wolf_LTRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Might be a bit overboard with the review title, but that's how I'm feeling about this story. Caught up to present (20220926, chap 16) and I'm really enjoying the story.
Not a lot is really revealed about the world, despite this it's easy to understand the where's and the why's. The characters and interactions are both random and hilarious. No cookie cutter stereotypes so far, and it seems the characters have their own reasons and reasoning- which I like because I don't get to see that in a lot of cultivation style novels. Conversations remind me of the shenenigans I get up to with my friends, and I'm very curious to see how the story progresses.
Most definitely NOT another crappy xanxia wish fulfillment novel, MC is not insanely overpowered, but he is reasonable (and most importantly) relatable. - 1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Hydra And The Heroes' Shadow is a cultivation-based LitRPG with a focus on magical espionage sponsored by gods, set in a magic school. The premise? Four chosen heroes are attending a prestigious institution, and it is the job of the protagonist to secretly watch over and protect them. The writing is quite good, and the plot is developing quickly, so I'm confident in saying that this story is worth reading. Enjoy!
- MeepNotRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Pretty enjoyable stuff. I really like that stuff actually happened in the first 12 chapters, compared to other novels that drag on and on.
For now, just a bit formulaic. Hope it will diverge from the tropes centered on the magical school, nobles vs commoners, light vs dark gods theme. - bsmnRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Read up too chapter 27 its not bad a mix of cultavation and litrpg. Not bad is pretty good feom me because i usually hate cultivation, but theres a lot of spying in this and its more focoused on his spy mission than the cultivation. Its still a big part of it but every 5 words isnt about how aswsome he is for reaching this new lvl but cannot beat his bully cause hes been that lvl for weeks and hes at the middle stage of that lvl instead of begginer stag. Can anyone figure out why i hate cultivation?
- God's HydraRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The thing about this story is it needs to focus a bit better on developing a main cast of characters, and focusing more on them. A lot of re-occuring characters have been introduced, and with the 10ish days between uploads, I keep having to go back and re-read parts to remember who some of these people are. Also, somehow, the main character just doesn't feel like the main character sometimes. I get that he is not supposed to be Hero of this world, but he should feel like he is the main character of HIS story. But its well written for the most part, and the story flows well. Maybe its just me though. I'll do an in-depth review when there is more, and I have the time to fully re-read it.
- CatAoiRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Not good at reviews but here I go,
Some other reviews said he is relatable and not overpowered which I like as the MC can grow and develop. But his personality is too average for the setting and his role as a shadow, he bumbles through without planning and is terrible at hiding he relies on his summons without even planning too much.
But he can grow and I hope he does but when he falls asleep in class and never practices his techniques I question why the goddesses chose him... he just seems too normal for his role and I don't mean he has to be special but is there any reason he got picked to be the shadow?
Despite the negative review I hope the author does their best, I would say the good things about this novel but I don't even know how to start and I'm horrible at reviews.
The last thing is this is an early review chapter 17 so things could change. - ShyBoyRoyal Road★★ 2.0And I'm on chapter 22 out of 26 ATM.
Before I begin reviewing: it's not a bad teen novel. And I am clearly not the target.
I got pulled in due to an interesting premise and a really lovely cover. Yes, I know, it's a peculiar thing to be hooked by, the loveliness of the cover, but I was. I wanted to read more about the lovely place that was depicted there.
22 chapters later I find myself increasingly often considering Ethan, the MC, as a character as well as the actions he took so far and how out of his depth he is. I'm more and more questioning WHY was he chosen. Why was our protagonist chosen for a task that is above him, doesn't suit him, AND doesn't hold much appeal to him? Not to mention he lacks the knowledge to execute it?
IMO, no wonder he prefers to do other things more. Which is fine and all but the premise kinda got sidelined. Or perhaps the juggling mentioned in it was meant differently? I had hoped for all those topics that were meant to be juggled, to appear in roughly the same proportions. So far the proportions are mostly about combat growth, for which money is important. A lot about friends, especially Alia. A couple of scenes about two out of four charges of our protector. And mere mentions of the other two: met in passing or appearing in a scene.
TBH - and with some HEAVY stretches - this could still be "all according to keikaku", but I somehow doubt it and am not planning to wait for it.
According to the "heroes' shadow" premise, I expected espionage, looking through windows, stealth, subterfuge, diverting plots, identifying enemy agents, and nullifying threats to the heroes via carefully placed surprise attacks or dismantling spheres of influence...
Instead, I got:
1. Gacha mechanics, aka underused summons carry the day while the master bumbles through it. There's a story potential right here: "My summoner is a bumbling baboon, I need to save the day, every day". No, it's not yet this story.
2. A teen-suitable mystery-acting from both si
