Description

A judgemental teenager gets isekai'ed in a world of gods and torment. She makes it their problem. All else is consequence. What to expect: -Strong to too OP:a story that starts a year after the mc has been isekai'd with her unique Game System, once she has already started losing touch with what a “normal high level mage” should be after grinding and levelling up on her own. The mc starts unaware of her overpowered nature. -Unreliable Narrator:the point of view from which the story is told will be heavily filtered by the character's opinions and trolling, edgelordy, flawed personality. Mistakes will be made. Consequences will arise. -Focused Storytelling:No filler arcs but foreshadowing elements rippling down the line. Consequences. A constant stream of consequences. In the same spirit, there will be detailed fights with a strategic mc who uses deception and cheesing game mechanics. -a deepdive on how even people who know what a cult is can get unwittingly recruited into them Note: On average, chapters are 4000 words long. Cover and writing are AI-free. [Participant of 2025's Writathon]

Action is very well done and executed, battles feels dynamic and novel. Their ending is often not what you would expect. I was never bored. I hesitated between 4.5 and 5,0 stars and eventualy made my choice.
You will not regret reading it.

Right off the bat the MC, Vic, just leaps out of the page. She’s witty, sarcastic, full of energy, and she doesn’t mince words. The kind of main character who makes you grin one moment and then lean forward the next because you’re thinking, “Okay, what’s she going to pull next?” The author gives her “edge” without making her into a soulless caricature she has personality, she has flaws, she has quirks. All of that makes her feel alive.
What’s more the plot keeps things moving. It doesn’t drag. There’s enough setting, enough stakes, enough weird fantastic worldbuilding that you’re both entertained and curious. The tone stays light enough to make the comedic moments shine, but there are real consequences, too so you’re never feeling like it’s all fluff. And the side characters, yes, there are a good number of them, and they feel like people. They have voices. They have vibes. They interact with Vic in ways that show off her personality and build the world. For example, the cultists, priestess, and especially karah, they’re not just background, they’re functional and colorful. Especially the latest chapter with ivy shining on her personality, intercations with the mc, not just as the usual glazer but as a another person with their own life own goals, and interest. Someone that isnt just some stepping stone for the mc to gain more popularity/aura. That makes the whole story enjoyable and fun to read

This review comes after reading through chapter 5 of How to Trick Gods into Killing Themselves by Lorn Lyes. I apologize for the spoilers! There will be some.STORYHow to Trick Gods into Killing Themselves is an isekai LitRPG that grabs you by the throat from page one and doesn’t let go. It follows Vic — a hilariously unhinged mage trying to survive a world ruled by cults and gods. The world feels massive, and each encounter (from bureaucratic priests to eldritch emperors) rocked my socks off. This isn’t your typical power fantasy. I believe that beneath the chaos is an undercurrent of satire about faith and systems.STYLEHow to Trick Gods into Killing Themselves is told in third person from the unreliable eyes of an MC who’s just done with everyone’s nonsense. It is funny as hell. The tone shifts between comedy and tension. One page, you’re laughing at Vic cursing out cultists, and the next you’re genuinely unnerved by how broken the world is. The dialogue is delightfully messy, fitting the MC's personality.GRAMMARTechnically solid. The grammar is clean. The author clearly leans into long, winding sentences to match Vic’s internal chaos. There are no glaring mechanical issues, as reported by the RR app (where I listen).CHARACTERSVic is one of the most entertaining female leads in the genre. She is overpowered, petty, and weirdly endearing. The supporting cast exists mainly to test her patience and highlight the absurdity of the world. The unreliable narration adds an extra layer, making you question what’s real. This story takes the LitRPG/isekai format and injects it with manic energy, wit, and heart. Lorn Lyes has created something genuinely fresh. If you like your fantasy smart, sarcastic, and unhinged, this is absolutely worth your time. 5/5

It’s a story with an MC that has no problem shanking someone. That and divinity deserves to get shanked. Vic Is not rough around the edges, but sharp as a diamond cutting everything she touches. She also fights the man at every turn for good or when it doesn’t benefit her or anyone.

This is such a compelling story. The author does an incredible job of making a character that is a total mess. She is an unreliable narrator, and the author lets through the perfect amount of real information to see through some of Vic's incorrect interpretations of whats happening.
Also love the choice to drop us into ongoing events a couple years after the isekai happened. I think the story is way better off for it.
Vic is also annoying and broken and uses humor to deflect and cope and the author does an excellent job of bringing that all across and having a very consistent characterization of Vic, without ever veering too far into pure unlikable cringe mc.
It did take until I think chapter 14 or so to really start grasping who she is and why shes like this since theres a lot of fight scene in the earlier chapters. Which by the way is written fantastically.

The start definitely does lay it on thick with the whole "wowie op spells go fwoosh" shtick, but past the 15th chapter or so the story actually gains nuance. At the time of review, it seems there is a direction this is meant to go, but I would follow along for a bit longer before making any definitive statements. Worth a read

This story is such a fun and engaging read! From the very first chapter, Vic’s chaotic energy, humor, and determination pulled me in. The world feels big and alive, with enough mystery and danger to keep me curious about what’s coming next. The fight scenes are especially well done tense, creative, and full of personality.
What I like most is how it balances comedy with real stakes. Vic can be hilarious one moment and serious the next, which makes her feel like a real person instead of just a trope. By the time I caught up, I felt genuinely invested in her journey.
If you’re looking for a mix of action, wit, and a unique main character, definitely give this a shot. Can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

Me loves Vic. Me finds Vic actually funny and super cool, even if she is a cringy edgelord teen sometimes. Me forgives her.
She is arrogant, but she can back it up.
    I started reading and I couldn't stop... I can't stop!
Me likes the way the game system is portrayed, like there is no numbers that I don't read, there is still the mechanics of it, but no statuses.
She is OP, but like, funny OP. Instead of wish fulfillment OP.
Also, she has morals!!! such a wonderful surprise!!
And she annoys the ever living fuck out of anyone that exists in her vicinity!
    Me Loves it!

Story- The setting blends game mechanics with fantasy in a way that’s immersive and clever. We see early on that there are also other races and monsters in this world, which subtly adds depth.
The story itself is amusing and never makes you feel bored. We follow the FMC, Vic, as she tries to survive and maybe even make some money in this messed-up world, but things quickly spiral out of control
Character-  The MC, Vic, is unhinged, funny, and massively OP. Her dark humour and attitude are a standout. She is beyond powerful but also considerate and tries not to kill any innocents while fighting with the bad guys, but It's interesting how the narration itself is warped by the point of view of the story
Grammar and Style – The Story is written well, and it definitely has its own style. Which stands out from the rest in the genre. My only critique would be to maybe edit some parts a bit to make the dialogue tighter. But all in all, it's written well.
Overall- The story is chaotic and witty with a strong protagonist and a unique voice. It’s packed with clever worldbuilding and biting satire, but could benefit from tighter editing at some points.

Style: The author does a great job of giving the narration its own voice, which adds a level of chaotic intensity to the flow. Never really found myself bored or asking “okay, when is something good gonna happen” even with the slow burn approach early on.
Story: I felt as though the main theme of the story was isolation. And it does a great job of making it feel heavy through Vic’s perspective. She has a lot of relatable hardships like having to bunker down in a society filled with extreme cultists, people accusing her of being a demon because of her ragged appearance and even down to little things like being forced into boring conversations just from trying to walk to the store. It makes the entire world around her feel unbearably insufferable… which is the whole point.
Grammar: I don’t see many mistakes when it comes to grammar. Great job on this note. However, there were multiple occasions of run on sentences that did slightly pull my attention away. But that may be intentional based on narrative approach. But overall, nothing game breaking.
Characters: Okay, Vic… VIC IS FREAKIN AWESOME. She is the best part of the story, hands down. But she isn’t some perfect little angel. She’s wild, brash, unapologetic… down right chaotic. But she’s also charming, funny, and relatable in a way that makes me sympathize for her. And it’s clear she has a layer of warmth and sincerity underneath all of the chaos… which just makes her all the more likable. A+ for Vic alone. As for the other characters… they do a good job of making you hate them… which is kind of their whole purpose. But seriously they all sound distinct with their own voices and none really sound alike, which is good. But I think it would be nice to have at least one more normal character that isn’t some religious freak or some cult devil worshiper. I think the story would benefit greatly from it later on!
Had a fun time overall!!! Great job!
