Description

After a heist goes wrong, a slum thief and his friend are forced to seek the aid of an immortal witch in the nearby forest, and upon reaching her doorstep, they are offered a proposition: their sworn loyalty for a year in exchange for saving their lives. Though it’s too late for his friend, the thief accepts, working with the witch and her apprentice to learn their craft. All seems to be well at first, but before long he discovers people are lured here to be experimented on, and breaking his oath, he decides to run only to be quickly captured. With his fate seemingly sealed, the apprentice approaches him with an offer—he is to take her place in a time loop set up for her years ago that she’s unable to take advantage of, one last gamble for both of them to escape. The problem is the damned thing only goes back a single week, and even worse is that it can only function for a handful more resets.

With an ever-shrinking lifeline, how can one possibly outwit an all-powerful witch in her own domain?

This time loop book, focussing on a thief who is learning magic and a witches apprentice who is teaching him, is written so well. First, the quality of writing is on par with a lot of the “New york times best seller” authors. All the paragraphs are well formed and very clear in meaning. Not to mention the story they tell. The actual story is intriguing and has me actually reading it and question what is going to happen next. It isn’t as predictable as I had thought it would be and while I’m only partway through, I’m excited to see as the story unravels and the questions I have are answered!

Thanks for the story. A nicely presented time loop story, with characters that evolve as we get to know them, and the landscape being an interesting unfolding character as well.
Story: quite good, the sandbox is small, but the use of every part and every revealed skill is nicely done. I did think a dungeon would be found in that cave, but no, sometimes a cave is just a cave. I liked the motivations of the characters getting deeper and more nuanced over time, and as their absolute age/wisdom grows. One star off because the Baron and the guard and other princes all are one dimensional and something could have been done to bring forward a broader sense of peasant vs titled class system conflict. Not really a criticism but an observation.
Style: very satisfactory. Mostly first person but the shifts to other views done well and helpfully able to move the plot forward as well as provide motivations for the characters.
    Grammar: no issues.
Character: the characters with screen time were good, nice progression of their motivations. The unfolding revelations were good. Elven motivation was a bit weak, other than to escape, and I kinda wanted more from Bassy, but that's not enough to actually take off points. Again, soundly done.
Overall, a nice compact, relatively little, but still substantial story. I was unclear about the end even after reading twice but I'm sure it's me not quite understanding later stages of magical theory reveals. It was an enjoyable day of reading. I hope you enjoy it, when you read this. So, Thank you, and yes, recommended!
