Description

Althea just wants answers to the questions that surround her life. Where is she from? Why is she not like the other centaurs? Why is she incapable of magic?

After reluctant warrior training, she goes on a quest into the wider world to find her answers. Along the way, in the deep woods, she meets a strange fox - a talking creature thought to have been long wiped out. He joins her quest to find her origins - and to discover if he really is the last of his kind.

I went into this worried about the possibility of furry nonsense. I want to assuage everyone's fears that that's not a valid concern.
Instead, what you get is the story of two magical creatures and the relationship they form as they investigate their identities. The type of banter they engage in will probably make or break the story for you - I personally find it cute and endearing and takes the edge of what is otherwise a fairly gruesome and deadly setting.
The writing style is well formed and provides no distraction.

The story so far is an interesting take on a classic adventure formula. While it uses classic Dungeons and Dragons tropes, items, and inspiration, I do not find this takes anything away from the unique world it is set in, which is described well enough to entice the reader to want to know more. I had some minor confusions, for instance, how Althea had never encountered a talking animal and seemed amazed, calling him a cursed creature, but later confesses that she knows talking animals exist in the wider world, even if they are rare.
Stylistically, the writer displays a strong voice. While there are minor struggles in the first chapters to define the Author's approach to certain issues of perspective, it is never glaringly unclear. Moreover, the Author's voice does not overpower the characters at any point, merely acting as a third narrative leg to the titular duo.
The characterization is well done. You can really get a feel for who the characters are, even early in the story. While humor is a predominant feature in their interactions, each has displayed moments that hint at future development to be explored. Each character is a well-thought-out individual with multiple layers to them.
The story's grammar is, while not flawless, polished. There are minor mistakes that could be remedied simply by an additional proofread, but they never glaringly take away from the story or cause confusion.
Overall, I look forward to seeing more of the world the Author has built and experiencing the story as it unfolds.
