Hobgoblin

Description

Life's tough! It's tougher when you're an aspiring teenage Supervillain living in a country on the brink of Super civil war. Add some girl problems in there and... well actually, Marcus Cove is having a great time! Things are messy, but they're certainly not boring. Plus with the power to transform into a blackfire wielding Hobgoblin and he's got the perfect double life going on: Super sixth form by day and bantering with his partner-in-crime at night. As long as the two stay well separate, he's sure it's all going to be fine! If only Cape and Spaceman can refrain from ripping each other's throats out... and more importantly, not destroy half the country in their attempts to do so. Winner of the RoyalRoad Writathon! It's written very quickly (for me). That means it's rough and will be edited and improved, but right now you're here for the ride. - Superhero Story- Character Driven- Messy Romance- Alt-History Worldbuilding- Big Build Up

Great read, really giving me what I've been missing from letting my imagination run away reading Ultimate comics as a kid. I'm only eight chapters in, but the characters are fun, their motivations are mysterious and interesting, and the background lore of the world is intense, impactful on the story, and really well sprinkled-through.
And it's written by an author who clearly knows his stuff, there are great action setpieces with distinct moves and great variety that all flow really well, really puts a vivid image in your head.
And this is a punt for the writathon, so you can be sure there's lots to enjoy!

Hobgoblin follows Marcus Cole who has the power to transform into a hobgoblin. Rather than being your typical tale of a young man brimming with optimism, Marcus (aka Hob) has less than noble intentions. On top of his aspirations of being a supervillain, he's tasked with juggling high school life and everything that comes with your teenage years.
    Story
The story has a nice blend of the action and the downtime in between the grander spectacles. It's here that the relationships between the various supporting characters are explored, and several more are introduced. Marcus has history with most of them, even if that history is one of cold distance, but when you're living life with an alter ego and your classmates are too, their futures will no doubt intermingle more.
    Style
I covered that partially above, but there is no shortage of action with the exploits of the various Supers. There's also the always-needed reprieve of civilian life, primarily focused on Marcus and his schoolmates. Everything is well written and the vocabulary is colourful. No complaints.
    Grammar
There are a couple of minor nitpicks here and there, such as run-on sentences, but it's easily remedied. I've approached the author before with feedback on the earlier chapters and they were tidied up immediately.
    Characters
The characters are where the story shines. While there are more and less prominent named characters so far, nobody feels like a cardboard cut out. I'm not 100% sure whether I'm meant to like Cassie or not at this stage, but I think that's something that'll be developed. As with any good story, you're not beat around the head with what to think about the characters and left to draw your own conclusions from their actions.
My favourite of the side characters so far is the unassuming Mr Boyle, who has an air of dignity about him while trying to teach the benefits and drawbacks of Supers, powers, and vigilantism without imprinting his own morality onto the students. There's 100% more to him t
