If you enjoy somewhat 'hard' (but far-future) sci-fi you might like this.
If you are reading Systema Delenda Est you might like this.
So far both Khoza and Mufara's sides of the story are quite enticing and well executed for the most part. I've become invested in both characters' situations within the opening few chapters. The jumping between viewpoints is a bit confusing at first, but around chapter 3-4 everything starts making sense.
As an aside, I appreciate the appropriate attention being paid to AI use, as having a sci-fi story in the modern day with no AIs, or AIs that are seemingly less intelligent than ChatGPT, is quite emersion-breaking. This is not one of those stories, so thank you. - SundayravenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Godfall is the perfect mix of sci-fi and fantasy with professional-level writing and a deeply interesting world. You won't regret reading it!
The style is just about flawless. The writer is skilled as shifting tone whenever we visit different viewpoint characters, and can write both humor and tension very well. It's easy to follow what's going on even when multiple characters or new concepts are involved. It's an easy read with quality prose.
I have zero complaints about the grammar. Godfall feels like a professionally edited novel. Any typos were small and escaped my notice, and the writer has a good understanding of sentence structure, tempo, and grammar/punctuation.
The story is perhaps the weakest point, but that's not to say it's bad. Having multiple POV characters is something you either love or hate, and I fall closer to the latter. I think the story would have been stronger if it focused on Khoza, with Mufara chapters kept as occasional interludes, but since it's a personal preference and it's clear from the synopsis and tags that Godfall has multiple lead characters, I'm in no way going to mark the story down for this. The rest of the story and world is extremely well-designed, and the mystery of what's going on is sure to keep you reading. I really like the AIs.
All of the characters are well-written and feel like individuals, but Khoza is easily the most engaging. There are a good number of minor/side characters already, but the writer doesn't fall into the trap of making them all feel like faceless extras. Having some AI characters is a really nice touch, and I like the humorous interactions between Khoza and Dag.
I definitely recommend reading Godfall, even if you aren't partial to multiple lead characters. Godfall is sci-fi done right. - MtlKillsMyBrainRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Personally I’m fine with the story as it currently is however others may be off out or confused due to current amount of povs.
Im giving this book five stars for now cause I want to boost it.
It’s also new so it’s hard to fully judge it.
The grammar is fine. - ZareithRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a fantastic story, unfolding from multiple POVs. With a vast futuristic world, well thought out MCs and great level of detail, the story really stands out. I love the pacing, and also love the depth of world-building.
The concepts of SHiT and magic mushrooms are particularly hillarious.
At times the details do get in the way of story progression, esp. when lot of the concepts are being introduced at once - this is not a criticism of the level of detail, but just how and when they are woven into the story. Also, at times the author seems to lean a bit too heavy on thesaurus eg. words like diaphanous stand out like beacons of unusual wording in a totally casual context. - simplyleoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style:
Alright, so the style may be the weakest point of the story. There are times when the dialogue becomes difficult to follow because of missing dialogue tags. Right now, it's manageable, but I can see this becoming an issue further down the line. If there is a large character cast, it will be easier to get lost. I also feel like the flow between switching MCs was a bit off since the view swap happened a bit out of nowhere. I felt like it took away the engagement I had for Khoza at that moment as I blitzed through the chapters.
Story:
The story is pretty good. It's entertaining to see Khoza's development and how his role plays out. The prologue teaches you a lot about the setting and the stance between technology and Gods. The author exposes the reader to many sci-fi elements that really immerse you in the story, such as the combat AI assisting the legionnaires in their power armor. Even the voyager element with Khoza felt well delivered. Timelines at the start may be confusing, but it irons itself out pretty quickly.
Grammar:
Some long dialogue sentences felt like they could be broken into smaller chunks. With some editing and polish, everything will come together nicely. Overall, there were no obvious issues that took away from the story.
Characters:
The character dynamics so far feel natural and pretty well delivered. I won't lie; so far, all the AI interactions have been my favorite. Dag and Khoza have a very solid dynamic, and their conversations have really brought out the best in each other.
Overall:
I recommend this story if you are looking for a sci-fi story with enjoyable AI interactions and settings that are similar to Fallout and Warhammer 40k (Though a lot less grimdark at least up to what I have read). - James ThomasRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Godfall is a story that expertly blends sci-fi elements with traditional fantasy. So far, the story is off to an excellent start. There are many POVs, which slow down the pacing a bit, which makes me think this is going to be a longer series. That's a good thing because the world-building is fantastic and this universe deserves to be fully explored.
Style:
The prose is very detailed, which does a good job of displaying the world-building without being overbearing. This is especially true in some of the more sci-fi sections, where the details are used to emphasize the power of technology without devolving into meaningless technobabble. The same detailed style is consistent with the fantastical sections as well, where the technological descriptions are replaced with a more theological magic system. Both sides of the story blend well, to the point that I didn't even realize the technological discrepancies between Khoza and Mufara's chapters at first.
Story:
At the time of this review, the plot is still being set up. From what I can tell, the story is split into two main sections. Khoza's section, which is more sci-fi focused, and Mufara's section, which is more fantastical. It looks like the author is going to drive these two storylines together, and I'm interested to see how these two worlds clash.
I will say that the world-building is very interesting. The detailed descriptions hint at a rich and thought-out world. The author uses little exposition, which means that characters are often talking about things I don't yet understand. I enjoy this approach to world-building, but I know some people might get confused or frustrated by the lack of answers.
Grammar:
The grammar is excellent. I only noticed a couple of errors throughout the ten chapters I read.
Characters:
The story is split up into two main characters with a couple of side characters.
Khoza is a colonist who set out from Earth on one of the first manned interstellar ships. However, the trip goes wrong, and h - RavensFantasyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style: The style is a little confusing for me from time to time as it goes between two different sets of character point of views. I assume that has some purpose to which we may see in later chapters. The character switch may make it confusing for some. I didn’t mind the thought lines that the author uses throughout the story as it helps give us a bit of insight into the character Khoza. The story is also a bit of a Litrpg as the author does use bold black text to go describe some things. Overall, the style of the story is not bad. Just a bit confusing at times.
Characters: With the switch in characters I wasn’t too entirely sure on who our MC really is. I believe the main MC is Khoza which appears to be nonhuman as they somehow managed to live a very long time. Khoza’s interactions with the AI Dag was amusing to me in bits which I enjoyed. As, I really enjoyed these two interactions so far, I hope the author will continue to develop these two characters.
Grammar: The overall grammar was pretty good. There was one thing I questioned but the rest seemed good to me.
In Summary: The style may be a bit confusing but overall the story was written well. Characters like Khoza and Dag made for some interesting interactions to which I can’t wait to see how the author develops their relationship. - RznRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Was looking for a completed story and found this, but it is an unmarked stub. Only the first chapter remains, but even still it has a good amount of prose to get the narrative style and a feeling for the author's skill. There is not really a hook in the first chapter, a little mystery, but the descriptions and exploring are the focus and do try to set a rather somber tone. It does engage the senses, but it doesn't do much in nearly 2500 words to try and set a hook right until the very end. Not sure if this ever got published or not, but the prose does have a fair amount of run-on sentences and it does have some awkward constructions, nothing serious as this already seems to have been edited. It was a good first chapter - just wish it wasn't an unmarked stub on top of it.
