The OxRoyal Road

I want to begin this review by stating that many of the flaws I think it has are a direct result of this being a story written for Writathon. I also want to commend the author for how many amazing details and style elements ARE present in Gilded Serpents given the incredible pressure putting out a story during Writathon and meeting the word quotas is.
Gilded Serpents is at its heart, a Romance. That is not a popular genre on Royal Road, and may be why such a well-crafted story has gotten very little attention, its in the wrong genre for the demographic here. That said, for a reader willing to look beyond a genre tag, this story has much to offer.
The protagonist is Mira, a young girl just on the cusp of spreading her magical wings and becoming an independent life. She is anxiously awaiting being chosen by one of the Four Guides, entities which select mage candidates for training, so she can begin learning in one of the four schools of magic. At the beginning of the tale, she has repeatedly performed the necessary ritual to request selection from a Guide, and seemingly recieved no answer.
The reason for this rejection is at the heart of the stories conflict so I will not spoil it.
She is present with her mother and sister at a ceremony where her sister is a candidate to travel to the front lines and serve in combat or support of combat.
At this ceremony, she meets a mysterious masked stranger, who promptly ruins the pomp and ceremony before disappearing. Mira is blamed for the farce by proxy. The next morning she is without warning rescued/kidnapped by the same masked stranger who informs her that the authorities are coming to arrest, try, and execute her.
This begins our fast-paced road trip, fleeing from pursuit, fighting off enemies, discovering the depths of Mira's magical power, and the truths about Lumo, the mysterious masked stranger. We also meet magical creatures, talking animals, horrible magical bog witches, exiled mages, friendly and hostile knig
