Description
In the year 2252 I, Axel Garcia, woke up early, ready to enter the next phase of my life. I've since concluded that I should've slept in. Story details:A mix of slice-of-life, monster killing, and someone who wants to do good in a world fraught with greed and, well, monsters. Protagonist:Male, first-person PoV. Setting details:Cyberpunk world where humanity has been pushed to build futuristic fortified cities for their own survival against the monsters. And there are... Magical girls?:Less Mahou-Shoujo and more superheroes, but yes. But there's also military?:Also yes (and unlike every superhero story, the normal people fighting monsters actually know what to do for a change). But... HOW?:By the magical power of "common sense" (and big guns). Minimum Chapter Size:2K (4K starting on ch92) Posting Frequency: When I can Also you can go over to [Patreon] to read ahead.

Just as my title says, Gamma-protocol mix different concepts that may seem strange firstly, but they fit so well together when you read that it's impossible to complain.
Style: I've been following the author since his last work, Aetherfall, and I'm confident to say that his style of writing has improved. Furthermore, the subtle hints of mystery and the slow demonstration of this unfamiliar words makes me always want to know what comes next. It's so interesting to see how a world so technological fair against monsters. We can't forget that at the end of the day, the setting has clear cyberpunk vibes, so the story is full of social dilemmas and the differences between the top and the bottom of the hierarchy. And to finish, the Megucas are such a wild-card to this whole setting that makes me want to understand WHY they are there.
Grammar: Can't complain here, Ravn does have a good grammar, and the occasional typo is patched up by his beta readers.
Story: It's a vast world with many secrets, you have to hop in the ride and slowly discover what is happening alongside the MC. If you pay attention, every chapter gives you a subtle hint to the plot, making you theorize what could happen.
Character: Alongside the mystery, this novel has a huge focus on its characters. Everyone feels so alive, their reaction so like a real person. They have different facets that they mask behind some mask. The calm slice-of-life chapters shows what THEY want to show, but the tense ones can demonstrate the real them.
Overall, pretty good novel, one where I'm always eager to read and understand what happens next. - Lurker LuuuurkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's stories like this that cause me, to return to RR. Food for the soul ! Get it while it's hot ! - NayrukeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Seriously I don’t know how this story isn’t more popular it’s essentially a litrpg apocalypse, cyberpunk, magical girls story all mashed together and it f’in rocks!!! Genuinely some of the best writing on the platform and excellent by any standard. The characters are all incredible vivid with great relationships and strong dialogue. The only minor criticism I have of the story is there hasn’t been a major emotional hook but with how early it is I can see myself giving back the half star I docked. I think if you like any and I mean any of the mashup genres you need to give this story a try. To the author best of luck making this your full time career you deserve it. This story is one of the best I’ve come across in years and really hope it stays the course.
Now I must ramble for sixty words in order to complete my review the doctor is really great. The world building is really interesting so far I really enjoy how the author portrays the insane scale of New Francisco. Most cyberpunk stories fail to capture the scale.
The first 20 or so chapters are just the call to action I enjoy the pacing so far and the first arc was great now transitioning into the second arc I hope the author sticks the landing - Casual Human MaybeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This so far is a great mix between superpower and cyberpunk, the characters are fun and the pacing it great, the only complaint I have is that the credit system seems out of whack, thought I can see how it came to be with inflation and everything, I just sort of feel like the numbers thrown about Willy Billy, has no negative effect on the story and doesn’t change my opinion at all it’s just something I noticed
- RedPineRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First off, MC passes the not evil test with flying colors. Before the story even began, he had the time and focus to figure out what he was wanted to do, and why. Granted, he made those plans before accidentally getting superpowers, so he routinely encounters choices he never thought he needed to consider, but he learns from his mistakes.
Like most of the best litrpgs, it could barely be recognized as a litrpg. The MCs "system" is a well meaning but hilariously flawed character that's almost as confused as the poor MC, not some infallible exposition dumper as is all too common in the genre.
Better yet, the power isn't free. The details are beyond the scope of this review, but the limitations and logistical challenges are personally and practically significant to each character.
Now that I've described how the story isn't bad, like the progression or litrpg tags might lead you to believe, why is the story great? The characters. Everything about them matters. If someone is old, that's not cosmetic. They have health issues, a lifetime of baggage, and pending mortality looming over them. If someone has a bionic limb, it shows their personality, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle. None of this comes from info dumps or monologues, it's all told organically.
Lastly, room for improvement: Their are occasionally continuity errors. Talking face to face during what should be a radio call, transitioning from one scene to another too quickly, etc. It's rare enough to not detract, but needs a pass if ever going on the lines of Amazon.
All in all, worth your time, a rollercoaster between relateable feels and hilarious absurdity. Even if this goes on Hiatus, it's still worth reading for what's already there, and worth following for when it continues. - SilverChariotRequiemRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Having read other stories the author wrote I expected this to be good. But even then I was blown away by the quality of this story so far.
The general plot has a lot of promise and I'm excited to see where it goes.
The characters are all great so far and have a lot of potential for development.
The world is exciting, well described and a good depiction of a dystopia (not that everything in the book is grimdark, but there are harsh realities to overcome).
Read this, it is good. Check out the author, they are good. - TelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one odd cyber punk magic girl story.
The writing is superb, the world building shockingly well done dystopia, there are still freaking LLM's and highschool classes on how to exploit them which is hilarious, and the characters are gritty in all the right ways.
If you want a sort of judge dredd meets magic girl genera this would be the one.
Less sparkles and more high caliber however.
Be warned.....the magic does get fluffy....in an angry don't want to meet this in an alley way......muahahahahahahaha - UnwightRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Except Axel, who's XY chromosomes didn't stop him from gaining powers, anyway.
I'm always, always a sucker for monstrous (or monstrous-looking) protagonists, but Gamma protocol has merits beyond its surface-level gimmicks. The prologue rockets you straight into the action, clear and easy to understand while still really selling the desperate tension of the characters involved.
It's an ugly world out there, where starvation has a strict definition in the manual, Ais monitor your language and fine you for swearing, and all the worst parts of the internet are spammed straight into your brain.
Oh yes, and monsters of mysterious origin are trying to kill the entire human race. Can't forget that, of course.
Enter Axel, who just wants to be a city guard like his father, only to have his plans de-railed when one of the greatest scientists in the world highjacks his graduation and drags him into a plan that has yet to be fully revealed.
While the story's still in its early stages (we've only just gotten to what looks like the primary setting), I was impressed - it reminds me a little bit of Vaewolf, I think, albeit with less fantasy in the overall flavor.
If you're looking at the reviews to see if it's worth it, then I would say yes. If the tags appeal, you should definitely give this one a read. - VoxyldRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I can see several things I like in that beginning, characters, including the mc, the setting, and the little lore we get. Definitely will go far. also the futuristic settings are interesting these days so that's a plus. I think we'll see a lot more of that doctor too, and the
megucas part also shows a lot of promises. Same for the backstory of the mc, I assume a lot of plot will come from that. - sdeligarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0At first, I wasn't sure about the story as it looked like it would be another generic cyberpunk story with some rando who gets a bit lucky, gets some great cyberwar, and is suddenly unstoppable. But, I'm pleased to say the author has done a much better job than that and I'm looking forward to how the story plays out.
The world-building has been pretty interesting so far and is just enough for things to fit together logically but also leaves hints at more going on in the background that most aren't aware of so it leaves you curious about what other secrets you might learn.
Even the minor characters so far have been pretty well-written and interesting. It doesn't feel like just a bunch of random people meant to fill space but many of them feel unique and fit into the world very well even if some of them seem to be one-off characters that you'll probably never see again they still feel well written and well thought out as the main cast has been.
The writing has been very solid and errors very rare and easy to ignore. There haven't been any big moments that break the story because of obvious errors in grammar or cut-off sentences like some stories I've read.
Overall a great story with a lot of potential and every indication that it will actually meet that potential by creating a unique story instead of just coping the ideas of other popular stories as so many other recent stories. If you want a different take on cyberpunk than just one more protag loading up on all the cool cyberware than this is definitely worth a try.
