Description
“Your first death is always the hardest.”
Miguela was the third-born child of a well-off merchant family and knew from around the time she could speak that her life’s path was already decided for her by her father. She was to become an Orator, as was Xandran tradition. However, Miguela had an affinity with the magikal arts and somehow found herself studying at the Academy.
One fateful day, the government offers Miguela an opportunity to join a team tasked with the mission of gathering intelligence via scrying magik. The catch is that Miguela and her associates can only scry the deceased.
Miguela finds the memories of the dead haunting but is adamant not to fail because the prospect of regaining control of her life and using her magik to help others gives her a purpose in life that she never had before. Of course, Miguela soon discovers her new job has an exorbitant cost. Will she be willing to pay when the bill comes due?
Welcome to Five Kingdoms of Cordizal!
What is the Five Kingdoms of Cordizal?
I often get asked this type of question about my stories by friends, bloggers, and potential readers.
The Five Kingdoms of Cordizal is a high-fantasy epic universe that is the setting for most of my stories. The foundation of the universe is its multicultural, multiracial setting with several sentient races attempting to carve their legacy and survive. The world is fully fleshed out and vibrant with a rich and mysterious history not based on Tolkien mythology.
This brings me to magic. To me, magic is an essential part of the fantasy genre, so, of course, there is magic in the Five Kingdoms universe. However, one critical part of the Five Kingdoms universe is that magic is an abundant commodity that is a part of everyday life and not some plot device used to drive the story.
In short, the Five Kingdoms universe is the setting of epic fantasy stories with deep characters and world-building. I try to tell as many different types of stories as possible in the universe, and hopefully, you can find something for you in it.

- Alt41Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: I like the style the author is using, it's not as slow as other stories that have similar setups; As in someone gets recruited into an army or an academy or the like, instead it's quite fast and not dragged out at all, the mc soon finds herself being put to work, and so introducing us to the world.
Story: linked to what I said above, I like how the author uses the MC's abilities as a scryer to tell the story and for us to understand the world, by seeing how people died and what happened to them in their exploration of the Wildlands, from a soldier to a scout. We as the readers are left to piece together what we have and come up with the full picture slowly and gradually, which means that the author has a well thought out plan that he's following, and that's always a good thing~ There's also some room for internal conflict inside the mc herself and I'm looking forward to how that will pan out~
Grammar: nothing to say here, almost perfect and had no problems with it
Characters: the MC's power doesn't come up easily as using it has a certain effect on her, and that gives big room for character development, something we are already seeing hints of at the moment, just the difference between the first time she used her power officially for a job and the second time is a big enough indication of that. We also have some other characters, like her friend and the person she's working with, but she doesn't have much screen time at the moment, she's still distinct though so that's that~
Anyway, that's all from me, the story is fast-paced, short and completed, I totally recommended it~ and finally a big thank you to the author~ keep up the great work~~🎉 - JEPayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a fantastic story of a type of magic fairly common in fiction (at least in terms of effect) but uncommon in this story in that a practicioner is the focal point of the story. It has a novel approach to 'scrying' that, without giving away minor spoilers for the first few chapters, could easily make this a horror story with a few tweaks. All in all, despite an almost 'slice of life' vibe to the first several chapters, it is a traditional fantasy story in that there is high stakes and high tension, and it is all handled in a superb way by the author.
Style - The prose is pragmatic in the style of Brandon Sanderson, there to tell the story to the reader, not to get in the way. While there are areas where the fat could be trimmed a bit regarding filler words or unnecessary detail, all in all this is some of the best quality functional storytelling I've seen on the website.
Story - Extra points here for putting a magic that usually sits on the sidelines, front and centre. It's handled in a way that immediately punches up the stakes for the main character, but also the entire kingdom at the same time. The two sets of stakes are significant for very different reasons, one big picture and epic, the other individual and emotive, and the two are weaved together and complement each other fantastically.
Grammar - Generally very good, there's a few typos here and there, but nothing that detracts from the story.
Character - Easy 5 stars! The MC is intelligent and capable, but her natural talent is complimented by an emotional resilience and drive and that makes her immediately compelling. The supporting cast feels fleshed out and individualistic, with their own quirks and motivations.
All in all, an easy 5 star read - KalebellRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is honestly one of my favorite stories now because of how unexpected everything is. To be fair, I've never really read a story in this kind of genre so I didn't know what to expect, but this story kinda reminds me of the book The Alchemist because of the time period and everything.
Style: The style was great and I really enjoyed the descriptions of the characters, some of them had me chuckling. It was refreshing to see how the characters acted in a realistic way even in a fictional world.
Grammar: I did notice like one or two mistakes but it wasn't jarring.
Characters: The characters were awesome and I found myself getting attached to the characters that were supposed to be on the sideline, especially towards the end. The only ones I didn't like were the witch, because it kinda has romance and I don't like romance most of the time, and the Archmage because he was a little less cautious at the end, but those two things are just a small preference that is easily overlooked for my whole opinion of the story. The witch was a nice edition at the end of the day and meshed well in a strange way, strange being good.
Pacing: It was my favorite part of this book because everything happened gradually but there was still enough interesting things happening in each chapter.
Overall, this story is grate and I want to read the other parts now. - LireRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This fiction is one of a series of fictions set in a vast world, crafted carefully by the author.
I took a peek into his world, and I liked what I saw!
Grammar (5★):
Yes. A five.
Aside from typos, which were most likely just some finger fumbling, there were no problems.
Story (5★):
I find it very hard to say much here, since I really don't want to spoil something. But, here goes...
The story starts off with Miguela, our MC, leaving the Academy she is studying on. For those who get a hard-on for new and fresh premises and concepts, this is already a nice beginning.
Then there's the central magic of this story, which Miguela acquires in the 2nd chapter, called Scrying. I don't want to mention what it does here, since I want you to find out on your own, but let me just tell you that it doesn't just work like the Scrying Orb from League of Legends multiple seasons ago.
This magic alone and its potential was enough to hook me.
Give it a try, and I'm sure you will too!
Style (4.5★):
I would be more critical if I could, but I can't, so I won't. I don't have the necessary skills to be notice the tiniest of flaws here.
However, I have been reading for just about two decades, so I will just give my opinion as a reader.
The style worked. It didn't get in the way. I had no trouble knowing who was saying what or who did this. It successfuly managed to aid me paint a picture in my head as I read.
But, it doesn't get the five star from me because there were times where I just felt like information was being dumped on my head.
It wasn't that bad. And I like information. Information is Power, as they say. And it helps me know more about the world.
There were just a few places where that may have been trimmed down, and maybe slowly exposed through dialogue or other things. But the author may have wanted to limit the number of pages for some reason or the other, so that may have made him rush it a bit.
Still, it's just a tiny problem, so I only took half a star off.
Now, as a writer, - OrlonDogmannRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was a real, literal breeze. I'm being serious, I never expected to finish this story as quickly as I did and, really, I am so happy about it!! This was a disturbing look through an interesting yet sinister world, and I love it.
Style: As I mentioned before, you have a prose that flows like melted chocolate~ It's quick and to the point but it never feels bare or unattended! It's a delight. If I had any criticism? It would be the inconsistent length of some of these chapters? Some feel way shorter than others? But I bet that's deliberate.
Story: Scrying is an art, and not one for the faint of heart. Do you feel ready to walk a mile or two in someone else's shoes? Well, you are not, no matter how prepared you feel: experiencing death is never easy... ahhh, the magic system is so fascinating! And the looming presence of the Kingdoms is interesting, it hooks you real good
Grammar: It never took me out of the immersion, I never noticed anything~ So you either have perfect grammar or the story is so good I didn't even care about it.
Character: Each little person in this story feels alive and with their own, very clear motivations. Miguella feels so nice to follow through it all, you root for her, you feel her distress and drive to push on with her newly found duty, and that's all I want in a protagonist! - Ravenbridge StudiosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm reviewing at chapter 3, but I'm sure to continue reading this story. I have a weakness for scrying and foreboding visions, so in that sense I'm biased, but this is truly a fantastic beginning. The prose is smooth and won't let you notice it's there. Depending on your stylistical preferences, you will have different opinions on this, but I personally believe that if the prose becomes too noticeable, you're being yanked out of the secondary world. Good prose disappears into the story until you don't even notice it's there.
There's quite a bit of information delivered without the narration ever bogging down or becoming tell-y. The scrying is impactful and traumatic, hitting just the angle I like.
A well-deserved five stars for this very strong opening. - RoenzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is about a girl named Miguela, working as a scryer for the five kingdoms. She peeks at the last moment of the dead by using something he/she left behind. By then, she gathers some information about the bigger world and experienced various ways of death. Not the best experience for our girl, obviously.
Style
For me, this is the best part of the story. The flow is really nice, and the pace feels just right. I can imagine the setting and feel the experience of being Miguela. But I wouldn't be as strong as she is while facing many deaths. The scrying process is also shown in a way that really brings me to the other reality.
Story
Reading this story gives me a feeling like collecting puzzles of the vast world. It is so intriguing, as there are many things to unfold in the future. The bit-by-bit information sprinkled during the scrying process keeps me guessing about the bigger picture of the story. One minor thing is that there is no learning process of scrying. Miguela just mastered the art a bit too soon. Maybe it's going to be more natural if she failed at the first trial?
Grammar
Everything seems to be good here.
Character
Miguela, as the main character, is easily lovable. She is the obedient type of girl that does what she is told to do. I also enjoy the interaction between the characters, especially Miguela and Caecilia. I think a little deepening of their background and personalities could be a good thing. - S.N. KeirsteadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Solid start to an opening for an epic fantasy series. The prose is pretty straightforward, making it a digestable read. Miguela makes for an interesting protagonist; she has a bit of charisma to her that makes her memorable, but with the way the world and magic system are laid out, there's plenty of room for her to improve.
Standard formula that's written well. - _GlassesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Fragments of the Wildlands, a perfect title for an interesting piece of literature that has two main aspects to it. The life and story of the MC, a scryer, and the World Building that is done amazingly well in a piecemeal style.
Style: The style is fine, with a 3rd Person POV. It isn't my preferred POV, but is done very well and I have little issue with the dialogue, except for certain conversations that might need a few more contractions to make things sound more natural and living. The Scrying is handled well and I can always tell what is happening in the story, the descriptions of action and environment coming across very well.
Story: The story is great. Learning about the greater conflicts of the world around as the MC effectively looks out her window from her secluded, detached place in the world and is slowly realized that a lot of conflicts are going that she didn't even realize. The implications of Scrying, the unknown ramifications, and the underlining manipulations from some of the MC's most trusted make this a great story to theorize and discuss!
Grammer: The grammer is good, not problems from what I have been able to see. If there are any issues, they certainly haven't disturbed the pace of the reading or the general message as a whole, which I believe is satisfactory.
Character: Really enjoy all of the characters, each of them having unique and pleasant interactions with the MC, while also having their own motivations and suspicions. The MC, who seems to just be trying to deal with the weight of her new job, actually has a lot of ther characters pointing out odd things than she ever picks up on her own. I, personally, really like that. The MC is certainly being manipulated and her experiences with Scrying have left her somewhat disturbed from what I can tell, not able to see every subtlety going around like some of her unaddled supporting friends can. Still, there is a sense of duty and expectations that will push her further and further and I am really - DA_OriginsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story 5/5: A very well written and interesting short story that follows Miguela as she becomes part of a top secret scrying team for the five kingdom. Each chapter weaves a unique and interesting narrative as she uncovers part of a much bigger plot the author has created as part of his five kingdoms of cordizal series. An exciting world of magic and political intrigue that matches some of the great fantasy novels out there. The author has created something truly epic that will assuredly leave fantasy fans wanting more
Style 5/5: does the writing style flow? Yes definitely. The author has a style that is concise, clear, consistent with an advanced use of vocabulary and prose. I can feel the world and I can feel the characters. Big tick in the box here
Grammar 5/5: I'm not a big stickler for grammar having read machine translated novels in the past. But I have to give a nod of respect to the author here. The level of grammar comes close to professionally written books.
Characters 5/5: The author certainly put in the effort here. The MC and supporting characters each have their strength and weaknesses with a clear backstory. There's no OP in this story but that's by design. Instead, we find very real people each with their own goals and agendas interacting in a world that feels succinctly real.
Overall 5/5: this is the starter of a five course gourmet meal that is sure to leave you satisfied. If you love epic fantasy's set in complex and well designed worlds then this is for you. Oh and there's magic!
