- KingofPizzaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Warning: I have a soft spot for gnomes in general and used to collect garden gnomes when I was a kid, so this review is a bit gnomish, er, biased.
I was actually about to retire and play some Baldur's Gate 3, but when I saw this, I just had to give it a read. Just one chapter to sate my nostalgia for gnomes and to see if was good or garbage, and I ended up binging it.
Basically, this is great and my favorite story on the site so far. It's a great combination of classic '80s Kids-on-bikes vibes with a shiny, modern LitRPG veneer. And, their base of opertations is a parlor! Good stuff! The only thing I don't like about it is that I didn't think of it first!
Style: The writing has a lot of flavor and challenges the reader without being too over-the-top or cryptic. It is a high-quality, yet simple style that is fun to read and I was able to flow through the story like a breeze. The dialogue is short, snappy, and relatable.
Story: Good stuff, suits my tastes well. Mort gets it rough, but he isn't tortured for the sake of attention-grabbing shock value; it's just enough to get you to empathize with the character, but funny, unique and strange enough to keep your interest.
Also, I'm a sucker for stories with banter and heart between good friends, and this story is loaded with that stuff. An MC with a simple desire to keep his friends safe as they stand up against apocalyptic threats is always choice for me, and this story is no exception.
I am not a big, big fan of progression systems, but I still found the system here to be interesting enough to make me curious about its details. I am doubly curious about what path Mort will go down, and how it will contrast with the more traditional classes of his friends.
Grammar: Tha grammer iz gud.
Characters: It is hard to say a whole lot about the characters because I am reviewing this at a very early stage in the plot, I find the characters to be solid and realistic. Mort is a fun, sympathetic character with a good heart. I enjoy
