- CoerbRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I started Filters a couple times before it really caught on for me. It doesn't do a great job explaining what it is, not in the first couple chapters or in the description. It's a slow burn, like a seven course meal to the typical fast action burn of a dungeon/power emergence story. It has depth of character and philosophy that takes time to work through.
As of the latest chapter, MC has only used his power in public once. Other stories might have jumped into 'people have powers now and supernatural sheet is happening' right off the bat, but most of the time has been backstory and how he is dealing with being one of the first Controllers in the world. How the world will react, and how he should use his powers.
Dialogue feels good and natural.
The writing style is unique with its own particular feel and voice, and to me a cut above most of what you will find on RR. Seems jarring for some, occasionally commenters mention getting lost and having to reread. For the most part I haven't had that issue. Things aren't always spelled out fully right away but usually make more sense after a few chapters.
Very few mistakes, just the typical small things that slip through without professional editing.
In terms of criticism, not much so far. I'm curious if there will be more variety in powers and how the author will handle it - at the moment they're all basically the same and I think it could get dull, so I'm sure there will be.
MCs family is likeable and fairly well developed but his love interest is really bland and boring. Her whole character can be summarized as speaks Spanish and likes MC. I felt more interested and connected to sphere lady who only had one chapter. If their relationship continues to be an important part of the story I hope she becomes less of an arm hanger.
That's all I got for now, if you're like me and stalled on the first few chapters keep going! - MrHrulginRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is excellent. A combination of excellent characterization and high stakes, played out over a lifetime. Many stories try to have every week be another emergency; Filters plays it slow. Life isn't always like that. Sometimes weeks pass with nothing happening, and the story moves along without needing to dwell too deeply on them.
The style is distinct and enjoyable, the story is going somewhere without feeling hurried, the story was competently copy-edited, and the protagonist and side characters alike feel like real people.
