Fallout: Vault X

Description
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. New 'Tales From Vault X'
Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie.
After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race.
A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts.
The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors.
The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed.
The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own.
This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes

- AzrulacRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A beautiful book with a wonderful world and charming characters. I loved the world building, the characters, the details. All of it.
Amazing use of the Fallout lore, and done so in a way that let's people who don't know Fallout be able to understand.
Outstanding use of imagery. I was able to paint each scene, every fight, in my head as clear as day.
Though, there is one issue. After reading this book, I have most certainly Flowers for Algernon-ed myself when it comes Fallout fanfiction. - MVVRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Let's be honest , if you haven't played Fallout 3 or 4 , you will be getting only a tenth of the full experience this story provides.
If you have sometimes just forgot about the mainline quests and just let your feet take control and wander the wasteland, this history is for you.
Full of detailed if not always clear pictures of the enviroment, fully fleshed characters, and some digging into the MC, I have great hopes for this novel to get into the hall of the best RR will have to offer to a select audience.
This is not your average reincarnator/xianxia/transmigrator/looper story (as fond as I am of some of them , mind you) , but real meat. Come with some hunger and you will be served.
The author is willing to fix the minor typos and is really catering to the audience , so jump in and let's make this the best shared experience we can. - MasterofreadingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So lets get this out of the way early this is a marvelous story that I would recommend for anyone even those that have not played any of the fallout games (particularly 3 and new Vegas). It has a great cdoi main character and it has a amazing cast of side characters it's story is strong and well balanced between combat and dialogue and it is very discriptive of the environment that our main character finds themselves in. I does a marvelous job of creating a compelling story and drawing you in without you even realizing it. It does suffer a minor pacing issue in the beginning but it fixes it quickly and it is an enthralling read .
Tldr it's got a great cast and a wonderful overarching story that I recommend yoou give it a try - MooseonthelooseRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the atmosphere and lore, scratching that Fallout itch. Absolutely worth the read if you like Fallout, supertech with a retro twist, or power armor. The story takes a bit to get moving, but really nails those first moments stepping into the wasteland. Overall a very fun read.
Edit 12/31/23
I've caught up and have been reading each chapter as they drop. Volume 3 sees a lot of questions answered, and makes you ask even more questions. Grammar is improving, flow and style are much smoother and more developed.
As far as the story itself goes, it's about a vault survivor, heading out into the world, with a special pipboy and a strong sense of justice. As more points of view are added, the story gets more complex and engaging, but never strays too far and gets lost. The many characters are well individualized, with each being interesting in their own way. The world is well realized, with interesting settings and even paying attention to weather and flora/fauna, as is best in a fallout story.
The grammar errors take you out of the story sometimes, but such is the nature of weekly chapter drops on a site like rr. It's not so egregious as to make the story unreadable in any way.
Still one of my favorite stories, and I strongly recommend it if you like Fallout at all. - ZhaneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the Fallout Universe and the post apocalyptic time period over all. That could make me biased for this story, but I would like to belive that I would have enjoyed it even with no previous knowledge.
The author uses his story-telling to really bring the characters to life. The story sucks you in, and the chapters length is just right for a quick read every now and then.
The author have to work a bit on the grammar though. He seems to love his commas to death. Even in the last chapter it is as full of them as in the first. When I get in the flow of the story though, my eyes just learns to ignore them. In other words, it's not unimmersive in any way. - DnojRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This deserves more views and followers, but I guess it's understandable since the Fallout franchise has kinda gone through it's peak in terms of hype. If this came out around the same time as Fallout 4's release, I bet this would have been on the front page of RR frequently.
Anyway, on to the story.
Pros:
Love the characters. They're all distinct, and they make the world feel lived in. My favorite is definitely Rosie.
The plot seems to have already been planned out.
Grammar is decent. Rarely any errors.
Great world building! Integration into the Fallout canon was well done.
Cons:
THE PACING!!! Here is my biggest gripe with this story, and why I'm taking a break from it. So, spoilers but
every volume starts with a new character. So the overall plot's progress goes A-B-C with volume 1, then resets A-B-C with a new character with volume 2, then progresses to D slightly at the end of volume 2, then goes ALL THE WAY BACK TO 'PREQUEL' TERRITORY IN VOLUME 3. I WANTED TO SEE WHERE JOHN AND ROSIE WERE GOING WITH EVERYTHING!!!
This is mainly personal taste, but I like my stories to progress forward. Some people might like Fallout X's style of story telling progression, but not me. I don't mind flashbacks, but they shouldn't take the entire volume. I am used to them taking a chapter or three at most.
Anyway, another gripe I have is that I find some plot points to be a bit too convenient in terms of characters being too, uh, emphathetic and kind to the complete a stranger which is the MC. I don't know, I guess I expected post-nuclear survivors to be a more suspicious lot. - Helianthus1992Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a review of Volume I.
Conclusion: I’ll start with the conclusion as that is what most will probably want to read. This is good stuff. Read it. Seriously. This fiction is great, especially being the author’s debut feature. I was already familiar with the fallout universe from the games and chose to read it because of that. If you’re the same, give it a try as I can promise you that you’ll feel right at home reading this. If you’re unfamiliar with fallout, no worries, this is a fiction set in a post-apocalyptic world with a touch of wild-west, with robots, kinda-undead-but-not-really radiation victims, steel-clad knights and “normal” people. The world is somewhat different from ours, but the author did a good job describing the differences. So what are you waiting for? Dive right in and get hooked like I did.
Story: Now this is difficult … I am not going to spoil the story here and instead give a summary of my impression. Being set in a fictional post-apocalytic world, namely the fallout universe that I was familiar with, I can say that it almost never felt out of place, totally believable and “realistic” from start to finish. The story fits well into the lore and expands upon the universe.
The story mostly follows John, the main character, who escapes the vault and finds himself in a totally foreign world. There are only a few chapters that are told from one different perspective, mainly to paint a wider picture for the reader to understand what is happening to John.
Sometimes it was quite easy to predict what was going to happen but then again there were quite a few more or less unexpected turns of events. The story is generally quite fascinating, which made it hard for me to put it down. It has some more tranquil moments followed by action-packed encounters.
Character: The characters are really well thought out and the author stays true to them throughout the story. When I started this fiction I imagined something closer to the games where the main characte - Jacker41Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story itself mirrors kind of close to fallout 3 so far in that a vault dweller is leaving their vault to explore the wasteland above. However, the similarities with any game stops there and the rest is an entirely new story that's both nostalgic to those who have played a fallout game and remember the first time seeing the ruined world to explore as well as being good enough at showing the world around and in the vault to make anyone new to the fallout fandom feel like they're not ousted or out of place. I worthy story to follow and rush to whenever it updates
- PrayerWalkerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5So, as a series I'm reading recently went on hiatus, I decided to find something else to read to take my mind away from what appears to be impending ww3 irl. But I wasn't sure what to read.
While on YouTube I decided to look through some Playlist I made a while back and watched the nuke break mini.
I love fallout 3, NV, and 4. I moved a year ago and had to sell my ps4.
Thats it for my backstory. Looking up fallout here on RR, I started one but didn't like it. So I tried this one.
I am so glad I did. This is only the second story on rr I've found that I'm am really impressed with. Also like the 4th I've tried so there's that.
Character building is great. World building too. Story draws you in and you just want to keep reading.
Yes there are some issues. Some minor grammer errors, and paragraphs were really long in the beginning. But I also love to see the improvement made by fourpin as I keep going. And honestly, none of the grammer issues have stopped me from continuing. The story is so good you just want to keep going.
I'd say whether or not you've played fallout or not, this is good apocalypse fiction. If you are a fan of the games though, then READ THIS! Seriously. If you want a story that fits into the universe, here it is. I honestly would love for Bethesda to publish this and make it cannon. Its that good.
Finally, Fourpin, thank you. I needed a good story to read, I'm only on vol. 2 chapter 1. So I am devouring it right now but didn't want to wait any longer to finally rate this. Keep up the good work.
And thanks for letting me escape all this recent talks irl or nukes getting ready to be used. Who knows, maybe we are all about to be living in fallout for real. - TableFableRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5It's not often that you find a new Fallout story, new in the sense that it covers new ground and isn't a retread of one of the game stories. I've really enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to starting volume 2. John is a solid, dependable main character and the side characters, especially Robco and his family, are rich and wonderful. I love the world building, especially Shadowtown. I look forward to see more of it in the coming chapters, as I feel that John's time there wasn't nearly enough for us to experience everything it has to offer. John deserves a hot bath!
I was worried about where the story was headed when the author introduced John's special pipboy, since it seemed to be an overpowered MacGuffin. Thankfully, Fourpin had a solid plan for it beyond "strong thing good" and wove it into the narrative, even building up a budding mystery around it that poor John must unravel bit by bit. I'm curious to see what he learns and how he'll feel about it, as he uncovers more of what the strange device is capable of. And what it has done to him. John deserves a break.
All in all, this is a very enjoyable read.
