- mythicwolfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read the 30ish chapters that were out when I first found this story almost non-stop, and I have been eager to read each release every weekend since. I have enjoyed every chapter and im hoping the releases continue for a good long while.
Grammar seems good(but i'm to dumb to know if it is for sure). Story is enjoyable. I like the MC. - Gorden BonesRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a great story about a kid with a bad life that doesn’t give up. He had a chance to become better and he took it. The darkness powers are a little confusing but I’m sure it will get explained more in future chapters. I like how even in horrible places Frank still has a sense of humor.
- FalconjhRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story is pretty good, the writing is decent.
The author loves cliffhangers, almost all of which are entirely unnecessary and more than half are of the 'next time on dbz' variety rather than integrated plot points that follow from the story. It's like the author got told they need to foreshadow, and decided the only way to do so was in narrative breaking end of chapter paragraphs.
The author clearly has a strong audiovisual imagination of what is happening. That doesn't always get transmitted in the text though. It's actually really good when it comes across, but sometimes gets jaring when it doesn't quite, especially in action scenes. - AzureDaoistRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Chapter 21:
It's a nice novel. Power system seems interesting. Cultivation in a modern setting, so stats get measured. Humanity is in a fight with monsters where the poor and weak need to stay underground.
The MC gets an interesting set of affinities, with lots of potential for further development. The MC is quite badass from the start as well even though he is really weak he has the heart of a fighter.
Now the cons, emotionally the MC is a wimpy kid. People easily walk right over him, can see right through him, he has zero confidence and no social skills whatsoever.
Another con for me is the direction it seems to go, the oppressed slumrat going to special forces school and joining the "oppressor". I kinda hoped he would set out on his own a bit more but I get the need of guidance for him to progress. The MC doesn't really have his own personal goals and aspirations. It just feels a bit "going to hero school" to become a white night to help his family and humanity. As of C21 we didn't get to meet his family while humanity had been really shitty to him
Let's hope he grows out of the doormat vibe.
Ch32
He has grown from doormat to experimental object. He was supposed to go to school but isn't taught anything, gets tested and used. At the same time his skillset seems really unique so I don't get why the military isn't treating him with golden gloves. There's lots of potential but sometimes it reads like the world is formed to get the mc to certain situations. Instead of the world making sense first and the MC acting on that. - Coffee FocusRoyal Road★★★ 2.5I've enjoyed the author's other works. Alexthymia, in particular.
Honestly, Alexthymia is a little rough. The secondary characters are all eventually sidelined in favor of the MC's storyline and puppeted into supporting and opposing roles for the sake of generating some conflict, but at least some thought was put into developing them first and I had an opportunity to connect to the characters and the story. It was entertaining and a decent enough read.
I was hoping to see the author improve on their skills, but that's definitely not what's happened here.
The most generous interpretation is that this is a rough dump of a first draft. It starts out well enough, with an interesting premise, and relatively strong writing, but it all unfortunately goes down hill.
Very little thought or care has been put into developing any of the characters, or their relationships with one another. Which means the friendships don't matter, and the villains are all cardboard cut outs. It pretty much kills any and all tension. Which means the nonstop action ends up boring instead of exciting.
BTW, development for me means some non-transactional screen time. The villain can't *just* show up to villain monalogue. The love interest doesn't *just* show up to confess their everlasting love/lust. (There's an instalust/soul bond thing with a villain (who's supposed to be a victim?) that is just cringey.)
Giant step back in quality for the author. It's disappointing, as we already have proof that they have the chops to do better.
