- AlexaLeeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I recommend this story to everyone who is looking to read a tragedy. Freya manages to capture the humanity and fear so perfectly. Each chapter focuses on a different person to give you a glimpse into their lives and will leave you with a rush of emotion, starting almost lighthearted before becoming much darker and more heartwrenching.
Style: Masterful. Each chapter revolves around a different character but they are related to the last which gives you a fantastic insight into the world whilst also constantly building the tension which makes the story impossible to put down. The writing is perfectly poetic without being too flowery and it flows wonderfully. I truly cannot stop gushing about this but it deserves all of the praise.
Story: Eyes of Bloodshed tells the story of two countries at war but it’s more than just that. It explores how people, civilians and soldiers, live their lives as their countries declare war on each other. Freya captures the rawness of it, the terror and the tension absolutely perfectly. It’s heartbreaking but I couldn’t stop reading.
Grammar: This is clearly a well-polished story. If there were any typos, I didn’t see them. Either that or I got so distracted by the story and the characters that I didn’t pay any attention to them.
Character: The characters are where this story shines, which is really saying something because the rest of it is fantastic too. Each character is an individual and distinct person with their own personality. Some stood out more than others to me (specifically Jane, who made me cry, and Jessie, who also made me cry) because they are so well written that they remind me of people I know in real life. Even when writing younger characters like Paige, they are so well done.
Freya Stone has crafted this story so carefully. It feels effortless but truly it is an incredibly skilful feat which clearly involved a lot of planning and thought. It has left me heartbroken, as expected from a tragedy, but this is the best one that - Chaos JesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I want to lead this with the fact that I was lucky enough to be able to read this story in it's entirety prior to it's publication. So fear not, there is an ending. That being said, this review will offer no spoilers to the story, and instead focus on the storytelling itself.
Eyes of Bloodshed mixes an amazing concept of format with raw, emotional insight to give the reader a thrilling, thought provoking story. The seemingly effortless story structure is executed expertly, and the ability to maintain distinctive voices in characters say nothing about Freya except that she has absolute mastery at what she is doing.
The style itself sets us up with an interesting premise. This story is fomatted in a way where the central character is an event that is happening in the background. As the event goes from point A to point Z, we are passed character to character for multiple perspectives on it. Events like these effect everybody, and Freya makes that point effectively. War is felt by everyone, not just the ones fighting. To give these quick, tragic slice of life glimpses into a multitude of characters is an amazing way to portray that.
Grammar is clearly checked with a fine tooth comb. I remember seeing a few things in a word document, but the published version is polished well, as nothing stood out to me so far as I reread it. Sentence and paragraph structure flows well, and there are no syntax issues to add confusion to the overall narrative.
The story itself takes something so raw already, and adds in a layer of emotional depth to really set the overall tone of the world. We grimace during happy scenes as we know they won't stay happy. We fear for characters in dangerous situations. Our hearts hurt when things start to change. There are real world parallels to this on a regular basis, yet Freya manages to convey that feeling onto the page.
Each chapter represents a different character, so to peg any of them for this sections feels like it's not enough. But I will say t - Inkwell RabbitRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Freya's debut fiction is takes a real strong shot at your gut with this story. You're left breathless with the unique take on storytelling and beautiful prose. Not only that but despite being in a different pov each chapter, you still feel connected to each character we are introduced to. The world is vast and Freya will be damned if she doesn't make you cherish each person we meet.
Story:
The story is more of a backdrop for the real effort that Freya is going for. With each chapter being a character study through the the emotion of fear and the need for survival, the actual over arching story serves as a back drop that links each character in each chapter. I dont know if this was on purpose or just interestingly timed, but we find the characters dealing with a border country invading their nation and about how each character deals with this news. Each character brings the threat closer and closer, much like an actually clock for the reader that by the last character all you can say is "Time's Up."
Style:
I had to check my spotify play list for its name, but there is a song from the rap group Fort Minor that sings this song called "Right Now" that has the same style as this story. Each character is a self contained story and the next chapter picks up with the last other character the pov met. There are no main characters in a traditional sense, for every character shares the spotlight as a main character. And because this is no traditional story, you will find this story reshingly creative in a sea of genre trending litrpg and cultivation stories!
Grammar:
Freya must have had a good editor, I found no errors!
Character Score:
As I've explained, each character repesetns each chapter and their daily life dealing with the looming threat of the plot. I can't stress this enough, you don't spend a lot of time with each character, and yet they come to light right off the screen, their developement is masterfully done but in travel size packages. Detailed through and throug - JMMatheisRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an early review, Chapter 4.
'Eyes of Bloodshed' is a poignant reminder of the fragility of everything we hold dear in the face of an unstoppable tragedy. Where fear creeps into the everyday until it turns to a overwhelming fight for survival.
Even at this early point it is a startlingly relevant and insightful take on life as stability is being eroded, freedoms restricted and the fight for life itself takes over every thought and moment. Every chapter is a snapshot, a moment where life, love, realizations, misgivings, fears, and shared anxieties takes place.
Freya is showing some real craft in this tale, this is a heartfelt album of photos that needs to be experienced and not just read. I can not recommend it highly enough!!! - TealiciousTeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Brilliant! Read it!
The tone, atomsphere and character work. All great. The clean, brief style and grammar are also all on point. Damn fine writing. The story seed is explored at a agonising slow pace and it is a the better for it. The tension is built up slow as we meet new people like links in a chain.
Lots and lots of death - emily_mccoshRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well, this is an absolute gem here on RR! It has criminally low views, seriously, y'all need to read this right now!
Style: I LOVE the style. Each chapter follows a single character in a city as two countries are on the brink of war. The most unique way it's written is that every chaper starts with one character, then by the end we're introduced to a new character in passing, then the next chapter starts from that new character's POV. It's such a subtle and brilliant way to handle a story of this nature. Bravo!!!
Grammar: Got nothing to say about this, didn't find any typos or anthing confusing, it was great!
Story: A haunting tale that begins carefree and sweet, but slowly builds in tension and dread as the two countries come closer and closer to war. It's such a great move on the author's part to tell the tale from so many different characters as we can see how it effects everyone differently.
Character: All these characters are awesome in their own unique ways. You'd think a story with a dozen or more MCs would be difficult to follow, but it's written so well I've gotten attached to all of them. Sally (who is a badass) and Bruce (who reminds me of Vander from Arcane) are my two favorites I think, and I'm looking forward to meeting the rest!
To sum up: I'm righteously angry this story doesn't have more reads, seriously, it's so well-written and pulls you right in. Everyone just go read it while I wait for more chapters to come out.
