- M W Arita AuthorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you're a fan of swash-buckling pirate adventures and a wacky hijinks, you're going to have a great time with Elise McGill.
To save her dying father, Elise ventures out on the high seas in search of pieces of a treasure that may have the power to heal him. Along the way, she bumps into a colorful cast of characters and the adventure transforms into something more dangerous and complex.
While the titlular heroine herself is a tad passive and mostly reacts to what's going on around her, I found her believable for a child character.
Much like the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, the true star here is the "Jack Sparrow" captain character, Archibell. He's just the right balance of cool and comedic, and acts as an effective foil for Elise.
The supporting cast is hilarious. My favorite among them is Tony, a talking trout with a Brooklyn accent. He gets by the far the funniest and most memorable lines in the series. His counterpart and love interest is Sincirce, a witchy femme fatale who balances out the team with her own flavor of wacky antics, too.
A character I'd like to see a lot more of is Chloe, the pre-teen queen of an island nation who struggles to balance her royal dutires and her desire to become a pirate captain and live a life of freedom. Honestly, she overshadows Elise to the point where I'd like to see Chloe get her own series in the future.
So go on, me hearties, and sail the seven seas with Elise, Archibell, and the crew! You won't regret it.
