- Pieter BredenkampRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I find it interesting that I have downvotes on my review. If you disagree, please leave your own review/remarks. Writers need feedback. And your feedback is essential, so that us, the reader, have a better experience as the author grows in skill.
1) Some of the ideas are novel. In my opinion most are pretty good, but there might be too many. Time will tell. Ideas are like plots in my opinion. If you go overboard you risk going crazy keeping it all together.
2) He gets Afrikaans culture horrifying wrong in quite a few places and does participate in some culture assassination. But then, he is also not saying anything any other uninformed person is not. I just... expected more? I mean, if your setting is Victorian England don't have your characters serve tea and rum, with white bread slathered in vegamite. ('Everybody' knows Victorian England had ceylon tea with scones. :P)
3) A lot of Afrikaans is used in the earlier chapters. That's nice. I would suggest you just skim over this if you are proficient in the language.
4) One idea I can get fully behind are his church. It might be seen as blasphemous by some, but I rather liked it.
5) The travel magic is strong in this book. I did point it out, but when the writer uses particular locations, just... I don't know.... use a pinch of salt?
All in all it is eminently readable, with very few glaring problems. I have bought worse at Amazon Kindle.
