Description

Monsters lurk in the night, but what if something else hunted them?

An incident in his childhood left Velik an outcast with a racial subtype that thrives at night and unique class called[The Black Fang], which focuses on just one thing: killing monsters. He’s good at finding them, and he’s good at slaying them. For ten years, he’s been gaining levels and sharpening his skills on the thousands of monsters infesting the wild lands of the frontier. For ten years, he’s kept a lonely stretch of towns safe.

Despite his efforts, this year has seen an explosion in the monster population, so much that he’s no longer capable of protecting everyone by himself. This draws the interest of another monster hunter, one that’s professionally licensed, but he seems more interested in investigating Velik than anything else. At least with him there, Velik is free to finally explore the mysteries of the deep wood, where he believes the source of all monsters resides.

Every answer he finds leads to new questions, and not even Velik himself knows the truth of what happened on that fateful day. One thing’s for sure: not even the monsters are safe in the dark.

Duskbound is a well-written LitRPG set in a traditional fantasy world about a reclusive MC with a special class who hunts monsters. Not exactly a groundbreaking premise, but the story nails the fundamentals. IMO, it's one of the better LitRPGs on RR, definitely worth the time of fans of the genre. The chapter release is breakneck at 7/week, too.

Great story with actually good writing. I skipped sleep to binge read the current chapters in less than a day.
The author has a plot that keeps you hooked and waiting to see what happens next. The litrpg aspects are nothing new, but the author manages to tease you enough that you’re interested in how things will develop.
While I do wish the MC had more character development, it helps that he’s competent and the author doesn’t make him do dumb stuff for plot.
Book one was well worth the read. Looking forward to see how book two goes.

    Not an expert however:
Felt like it had a good flow
POV changes added a bit something to each chapter
Didn't give you all the answers straight away (hate that)
    Characters seem pretty good 👍
World has been given a lot of room to grow
System has a slightly different format than usual litrpg, slightly worried about only having 3 stats, but we'll have to see how it develops, story seems more skill oriented anyway
Just my quick rambled thoughts, seems very promising 👍

The pacing and writing is well done. The plot is interesting and keeps me coming back each new post. The characters are fleshed out. What else could a person ask for?
In my opinion it is a good solid, fun read. Would recommend this book to others if you are looking for something good to read.

Genuinely intriguing is probably the best way to describe how it felt to read this novel so far. From the first chapter to the most recent, my intrigue hasn't faltered. When it starts is probably the biggest factor for this but far from the only one.
There's the mystery of who the main character is mixed with hints of what he's done but you're never outright told these things. It's a discovery of the past threaded with a progression fantasy in a way that is immensely pleasing to read.
Style wise, it feels like an experienced author with the word choice to match. It doesn't throw out big words just for fun, but uses a variety of different ways to describe what happens. My mind doesn't pick up any repeated words while reading nor does it find any ones that stick out like the author was looking through a thesaurus.
Story, the plot development builds with every new chapter and it never feels dull. It always has something rolling ahead no matter if the chapter is from a side character's POV. It also holds those POVs together really well.
Grammar, as stated above, it feels like the writing of an experienced author. It doesn't have any large grammar issues or spelling mistakes that I've seen.
Character, this is where I feel the fiction does best. It finds a way to make nearly every character at least a little bit interesting. Even if you're only here for the main character and numbers go up, it finds a way to pull in different side characters in a way that isn't paper thin. It also has these characters feel distinctive, which is rare.

I came to this from the Archmage Keirnan books and this is a good follow-up to that series. Keep it up! I look forward to every chapter and read it when it comes out. I like the exploration of mysterious powers and how they affect everyone around. It seems like there is a lot to explore with the dusk type of magic and I can't wait to see what happens.

This is an above average story, with good pacing, believable characters and no major inconsistencies.
If you read this review because the blurb could not convince you to read this story, then you should at least give this a shot.
Below you can find how I would rate it against everything I have read and the given rating of the review is against the average RoyalRoad story.
In the context of the best stories I have read in my life, this is a solid 3-3.5/5.
In the context of RoyalRoad this is an above average to good story, so it is a 5/5.

This, has been a satisfying read. If there was a rating above five stars I'd have given it. But sadly, there isn't.
Velik has just joined the Hall of Fame as one of my favorite MCs. He is a surprising blend of humble and no-shit-taking kind of guy. I like it.
I said 'surprising' because, for someone so young and with every justification to be an arrogant and selfish person – not that I'd mind – he isn't. And I also love him for his spear wielding. I mean, who doesn't love a spear wielder?
The story follows a mysterious boy, Velik, who also has a more mysterious past. Although he does far beyond his best, risking his life to protect the towns and their inhabitants, they still hate him, which isn't surprising; humans hate what they don't understand. But unlike other characters who would have been meek in his situation, Velik is instead calm but quick to slap down anyone who has too high of an opinion of themselves.
The Grammar is smooth and easily understandable, shifting from a mix of calm to intense all in a split second. I don't think anyone should have an issue following the story.
Being a newb author, myself, I don't really understand the style part; I just go with what feels right. And from my lack of issues reading the story, I don't think there's any issue with the style. Though, I'll leave that to the more experienced readers to judge.

I really enjoyed the story and the world so far. The ending went a little too body horror for my taste, but I don't think that's the general direction at this point. I think it was just the particular situation. I'm eager to see the next book and get more information outside the small area we started in.

As the title says enough of that. The story is well written although a little all over the place, I feel introduces too little of the things I need to get into a story, a prologue of how he ends up in the situation from chapter one would have me care more then just being briefly told. And as a result of not spending the time on getting me invested on the MC, I struggle even more with multiple POV than I normally would
