- SrayanRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I am always happy to see a well written dungeon core story. This one has good structure and grammar. Unavoidably for a dungeon story without a "fairy" there is no reall oppportunity for true dialogue and therefore a fair amount of exposition - combined with the Core narrating events as they happen. There is a somewhat snarky "system/ tutorial" that makes an occasional (blue screen) appearance but does not provide the stylistic and/ or conversational options of a dungeon fairy. Not that I am a huge fan of dungeon fairies but it has effects on style. At this stage of the story no dungeon monsters have evolved to linguistic sapience - although they might be close. The story style will likely change to more conversation when language using monsters appear.
This story starts out within one of the main RRL tropes - a decent bloke dies, is inspected by a Deity and given a reincarnation option - he gets a bonus feature that gives him greater flexibility in design of his agents (I.e. monsters). This will allow him to bring in creatures from legend and myth. Mana costs at first limit him to adaptations of real creatures that might eventually "unlock" more exotic beings.
Character - the Core has carried over the original personality (seems like a fairly nerdy and gentle guy), so he doesn't exactly rush into making a slaughter dungeon but he does recognise he has to work with his limited options in a dangerous world.
It s an interesting start - I think a some more interesting discussion of bio mechanical template design will be on the way. Mana use is also a component that adds some variety. It is VERY early in the story at current chapter - but a promising start. MC is still building first few rooms and some interesting/ amusing but still basic monsters. He has just gotten some scouting information about the outside and thankfully there isn't any sign of humanoids or large societies nearby - other than the small group of lesser kobolds he made himself.
If (like me) you like d - 1Royal Road★★★★ 4.0This is a fairly basic dungeon core story. The main character is reincarnated, although this distinction doesn't add much to the narrative. The dungeon system used is detailed but clunky, with too many moving parts in each stat table. There are huge infodumps, which are made even worse by being part of a tutorial, instead of the main character figuring things out for himself. The premise is fairly well done; I haven't read any dungeon core stories that use the same monsters as this one, so points for originality.
I can only reccomend this to people who already enjoy the dungeon core genre. - BrokenBulb65Royal Road★★★★ 4.0An interesting dungeon core story with a somewhat weird premise.
Grammar's OK, and what mistakes there are don't impact the reading too much. A map of the dungeon would help massively though, since I've found that putting a mental map into words almost always ends up confusing.
Unfortunately, I have the feeling the story is dead (nothing new in 2 months at time of writing), which is sad. If it is dead though, maybe the author might consider changing the 'ongoing' tag with the 'dropped' or 'hiatus'tag and posting an update saying so? - MxCrossbrandRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The tag for this review should indicate that I've reviewed the story at around chapter 3, but I've read a bit farther ahead signed out.
The story seems to be a fairly standard dungeon story, all things considered. Normally, I say its worth 4 stars, given that its perfectly fine. However, in chapters 2-3, the author has a bit of blatant self-insert masturbation where the protagonist goes, "I'm not like other protagonists, I'm going to actually listen to the tutorial." And the universe descends from on high and replys, "Its good that your not like other protagonists, otherwise we would have had to smite you. Have a cookie." It draws attention to the hand of the author (which is bad writing), is self-congratulatory (which I would prefer the author do in private), and is a poor attitude to have towards other authors, and I've detracted 1/2 star from my review for that reason.
In all fairness, the premise is interesting enough, and if the author can make it work, more power to them. Chapter 3 is just the spot where my interest in the story almost completely died.
