- Eli'sPencilRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I wanted to start this off by saying who the heck gave this a 1 star rating? Talk about being a hater.
Anyway, Dream Paralysis is a very interesting school life drama with some supernatural aspects.
Story: I find it genuinely fascinating how the MC has these dreams that are so life like that he is confused in whether or not they’re real. Eventually, you’ll have the answer to if they are real or not, but I won’t spoil that for you. I’m not too into school dramas, but the supernatural dream elements are what hooked me.
Characters: There’s a lot of characters so far, which makes sense since it’s a school drama. My favorite is Lance, he reminds me of a friend I used to have back in high school, the chill dude who’s always cracking jokes. He also sort of reminds me of the Persona bro character archetype, like a Ryuji or Yosuke. I love that type of character and Lance fits the bill. Also the MC is very relatable for those of us who weren’t the most popular in school. I wouldn’t call him a loser or anything but he gives me a sort of nostalgic feeling.
Grammar: 0 issues. Perfect. Great dialogue!!!
Style: it’s pretty standard and the author’s use of vocabulary is broad. However, I think this is where the story could improve. There’s a lot of back and forth between characters without much in between. I think the story would benefit from having some of their actions described as they talk so it’s not just back to back boxes of dialogue. Other than that it’s great.
I’m glad to have found this novel, since I’m tired of reading the same things all the time, this has been a breath of fresh air! - SlappaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Look, the MC is the Alpha Simp. He simps so hard it's a miracle he hasn't tried to buy the bitch's bathwater. I am not gonna try and deny that. I'd sooner convince you that the sun rises in the west and the sky is a lovely shade of green.
However... The story is still riveting, exploring a relatively simple concept to a ludicrously intriguing degree, and it portrays so many characters so realistically, especially when you take into account their ages, that I found myself unable to stop reading it, even when the MC made me want to claw my eyes out with his stupidity.
SPOILERS:
He actually stops being such a moron at some point! But maybe it's a fakeout, we'll have to wait and see. - mintykinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0this is my newest drug! im loving the story so far i am looking forward to future chapters! keep up the good work. im loving the dota references and multi-layered characters aswell as the whole setting, everything flows in sync so well together. the supernaturality makes it all so mysterious..
- Odi ErisRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5To preface this review, I'm absolutely enjoying this story despite its flaws. They barely bothered me for as long as I took the time to read this. I was supposed to just stop and review at around Chapter II but it got me hooked so I continued. Unfortunately, due to a busy schedule, I have to put reading this to a halt. However, here are my general thoughts on the what is essentially the beginning of this story.
Style - 4.5/5
The style is as I said in the title, written like a TV show. The pacing and the descriptions feel like the author wants this to be like a series of some sort. And I really enjoy it. Though when I'm reading, I'd want the style to be more akin to that of a novel but I also appreciate this style since I tend to write like this from time to time. I enjoyed it a lot and not many flaws were found.
Grammar - 5/5
I'm not an incredible judge at grammar so I gave it a perfect score since I also didn't really notice any major grammatical errors. I'm sure that there might be some small mistakes here and there but it didn't really take a way from my reading experience.
Story - 4.5/5
The story is pretty interesting, it's like a combination of Your Name, Chainsaw Man, Death Note, and even The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria (it's a light novel). It's an amalgamation of interesting concepts combined into one. It's going to be hard to pull off without resorting to cliche dynamics.
But if the author was able to use the appropriate troupes to their advantage, then I have no doubt that the story went as good as he envisioned it.
Character - 4.5/5
It's a pretty generic cast of characters who we've seen time and time again in different books, shows, etc. However, I don't really care because these types of characters are already proven to be captivating. With the proper care for their relationships and development, they could definitely be one of the best casts I have encountered thus far. The connection that everyone has is incredibly intriguing and I'm just at Chapter II - skilly7717Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Grammar (5/5): No complaints on the grammar.
Style (4/5): The style is good. The pacing feels right, and the interaction between characters feels natural. There are long stretches of dialogue without reminding the reader of who is speaking. I got lost a few times and had to go back and reread. Don’t get me wrong; I loved the dialogue. Sometimes, though, I could use a reminder of who is speaking, especially when there’s more than one speaker.
Story (5/5): I’m not the biggest fan when it comes to school dramas, but this one got me hooked. The MC has dreams that he doesn’t know whether they are reality or not. There are supernatural elements that come into play, such as gender-bending and such.
Characters (4.5/5): There are a lot of characters so far, which isn’t surprising, considering it’s a school drama. It’s just the beginning, so there’s still time to really explore each character. The dialogue is great, and each character has their own voice and personality. The MC is good, but I feel like the side characters are even better. They are unique and fun, and the dialogue makes them so lively.
Overall (4.5/5): It’s an exciting read with lots of promise. If you love dialogue and school dramas, then this is perfect for you. I can’t wait to see what the MC does in his dreams as the story progresses. I will continue reading, and I’m glad I found this story. Also, I love the cover.
