- AltoventureRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Dragon Spar is a fantasy/post-apocalyptic LitRPG featuring a sympathetic protagonist and an interesting premise of a class that can change the world itself. The author shows intent on balancing this rather than creating an overpowered character from the get go, lending a realistic spin to this fantasy tale and allowing for great tension and action from the start. Fans of dragons, detailed systems, and fun need look no further.
Style: The author has a good flow to their writing and a light presentation overall, using small paragraphs and quick character reflections to express the action happening on the page.
Story: The prologue gives good set up to the story, priming Chekov's gun without really revealing anything too spoilerily. The system is on the hard side with system messages and stat boxes, and they're done well so as to not overly fill the pages with chaff. When the story proper gets going with its main protagonist it kicks off with little build up, getting readers right into the action.
Grammar: Great! The authors clearly taken time to edit their work and the polish shows.
Character(s): Rosabella is a realistic MC thrown into the Isekai with a strong motiviation for her to continue forward. The prologue really helps set her up as a character even though it's in a different perspective and gives the readers motivation to keep going. - BigThinkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Dragon Spar is an excellent entry for a first-time into the litRPG genre that is so popular here on Royal Road - it hits all the right points to get you invested into the story, and as early as the prologue you are already shown bits and pieces of the game element and what you're in for mechanics-wise. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dragon Spar despite my overall skepticism of the genre, and am looking forward to reading on about Rosabella's adventures!
That being said, here is my review:
Story 4.5/5
The story starts off INCREDIBLY strong with a prologue that sets up hints of the major overarching plot concerning dark happenings in the game world. The first couple chapters really hammer home the bond between Rosabella and her dad, and there is this continual suspense that hangs over the reader as we cross the line from the mundane to the Game.
The narrative hits a bit of a speed bump once Rosabella crosses into the game world - with a fair bit of time dedicated to introducing the mechanics and re-hashing the protagonist's conflict. This doesn't last long however, and the author quickly steers back into the action once the business of introducing all the major world beats is done. Overall, despite the minor expository bump, Dragon Spar is great in setting up the major conflict for the MC, and has me pretty invested in what's to come for Rosabella and her new companions.
Character 5/5
Rosabella as the main character is fantastically well-written as a confused, disoriented teen thrown into a world they aren't even pretending to understand. Their inquisitive nature makes for a great surrogate audience as is the norm for most isekai-like works, and the inclusion of the System Query is a great way to introduce various concepts to our MC without handwaving the knowledge or pulling weird logical jumps.
The other Gamers that Rosabella meets are generally well-written, though at the point I've read up to so far there isn't much to really write home about beyond their surface-le - Damien HansonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story starts in a confusing way that left both myself and my son stopping and checking back several times to see if we missed something. But the confusion soon ironed out in an interesting and fun to read story. The Main Character is on a rescue mission, looking for his father . . . but not everything is as it seems. The power system is based around game-making, which as far as I can tell is absolutely a unique premise.
I've clicked follow and my son and I plan to continue to follow. Well done! - HouseOfBonesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like the beginning, a lot! From the air of mystery that lingers around RosaBella's father, to the perfect flow and the smooth dialogue. All is well written and deserves recognition.
The author, Keegan, uses light and short phrases to keep the story engaging in all turns, which only adds a certain beauty to the style. Her style.
The writing is clean and well crafted, displaying the author's mastery. There isnt any noticeable mistakes, and the story flows like water on a river, which kept me reading and reading and wanting more!
For characters, they surely feel real to read. They are complex and human, and you know? It has been a while since i read about human characters and through their mistakes and flaws. I dont know about you, but I love it when characters are relatable and arent simply "Perfect" in all the decisions that they take.
The characters in Dragon spar have motivations and emotions, which, sadly, i find lacking in many webnovels I read.
Overall? If you want an enjoyable experience reading a LitRPG Post-Apocalyptic novel, then this is for you. And from a author to another, i Got to say, Keegan is good and i cant wait to finish this whole thing off someday.
- Bones - Nemo OmniaqueRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: The writing style is among the strongest elements of the story to me. Not only is it simple and easy to read, but it is also descriptive enough and paints a decent picture of what is happening, the scenes at play, and the environment. I felt that I got a good feel for things, basically. It is a true balance, honestly, that I think was well executed. It also flowed very well and did not have any moment where my brain just broke trying to read a sentence: well structured. This author is clearly not an amateur.
The writing style also does a very good job in utilizing the first-person narration style to add to the main protagonist's character. Her personality is imbued into the narration's style, and I thought I got a good feel of her character, personality, thoughts, et cetera without her needing to speak. It felt as though I was in her head.
It also has moments of witty humor, especially with how it sometimes describes things. I really did enjoy it.
Grammar: Besides extremely minor little things I picked out and made suggestions for, it is very good. I think this story has clearly been proofed and edited before publishing.
Character: I already kind of covered some of this in the style section, since the character and the style are kind of intertwined, but the main character is another strong suit of the story. I thought she was a likeable and relatable character, and felt more realistic in her thoughts and reactions. The other characters I don't have much of an opinion about, but they all felt unique and had their own personalities to them. The system in this story also had a personality to it, which I found interesting.
Story: I don't have a strong feeling for the story (and plot) yet. It is still in its earliest phases as of the point I have read to. LITRPG in general is not my cup of tea. But I found the story to be enjoyable, primarily from just the way it is written. There are elements of mystery to the setting, especially since the main character has no i - SkarabraeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: The story's style is very good. The author is able to convey the story's tone very well. The word choice is pretty much perfect for that. I can also say that the author's way of writing is unique. The literary device of imagery is used very well as well.
Story: The story is very good. It is paced at exactly the rate it needs to be, and it gets into the main meat without feeling rushed. The story also develops at a very good pace that helps out the story as a whole. The story itself is about someone who gets magic powers in order to save her father. This is a very compelling motive and start to the story. Additionally, there are a number of elements of mystery that are good for keeping you invested in the story. Overall, very good.
Grammar: There might be some grammatical errors that I didn't notice and haven't been corrected yet, but they are too minor to be distracting. So, no complaints.
Character: The characters are very good. They are all nuanced, three-dimensional, well-depicted, and realistic. I can say this for both the main character and the side characters. They are quite compelling and interesting too. The main character's motives are especially relatable. So, very good. - The King of GamesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story of Dragon Spar is one of a kind. The pacing is perfect and the overall story is one of the best I have read on this platform. The author's voice is so well crafted that one can tell this is not a story written by someone new at writing. Its got SYLE and the story is better for it.
My pitch for this story is as follows; If a LitRPG novel and a YA novel walked into a bar and got on well—Dragon Spar would be the product of that love affair. The writing style and DNA of the story share a lot of tone one would see in a YA story and add a game system (a snarky one at that) with a LitRPG plot device; we get a well-constructed and wild, wild ride.
The characters are deeper than we normally see in the LitRPG genre. Characters are not only focusing on leveling up; they have motivations and actions that drive said motivations. Every story needs to deliver us a promise and fulfill the said promise. This is my biggest complaint about the genre and WOW Dragon Spar freaking delivers.
The Grammer is immaculate. The expectations are pretty low on Royal Road, my rule is to go easy on grammar as long as it doesn't take me out of the story. But I can't remember the last time I read such a polished story on RR.
I hope to see this story grow and reach a lot of readers. Because it deserves to have so many people reading it. I cannot wait to start reading book 2. - TheJournalistRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Frankly, I loved the story more than a sizeable sum of the most famous ones on here. The author is clearly experienced and has a great handle on the English language, and how a story should flow.
The characters are all fleshed out, even the other antagonists although they're not the focal points of the focus, they have an edge. Naturally, the main character Rosabella is even more multidimensional. Her rich inner world is complex with its own set of wants, flaws, and ideals as she navigates this precarious situation she suddenly found herself in. Need less to say, with such a realistic depiction of the human psyche one can't help but relate to the character and want to see what happened to them.
The LitRPG elements are fresh, unique, and perfectly executed. The story overall has a grip to it, it draws you in and keeps you wanting more. So here is to hoping the author posts even more!
The grammar as mentioned above is beyond great. It's vivid, immersive, and pulls you into their world. I was with Rosabella's carefree moment and when her world collapsed.
Style, Chief's Kiss, great pacing, again the author knows what they're doing.
Give it a shot! - V.J.DaranRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story starts off with lots of mystery already as the MC's father acts mysteriously, and is always worried about his daughter. The pace and actions picks up soon after, where we are also introduced to the system, a bunch of more mysterious, but seemingly fun characters, and a brand-new game world. The story is well paced with plenty of mystery and intrigue, and well written with nice and vivid descriptions, interlaced with humour in all the right moments. The characters all have their own unique personalities, which is nicely brought forth by the clear and descriptive writing.
Overall, it makes it really fun and engaging to read.
Grammar: I couldn't spot any errors from what I've read, so if there are any, it is definitely not going to break the reading flow.
Style: The writing is clear and vivid and portrays the story and characters well. Occasionally, I find the descriptions to be a bit too much and too detailed for my liking, but it doesn't change the fact that it's lots fun to read :)
Character: The characters are introduced slowly and developed well, highlighting their individual personalities. So definitely all good for me!
Story: I find the story, the world, the system, the game, and everything else to be interesting and unique. Absolutely love it all
