Don't make friends with thieves [High fantasy]

One needs to look primarily after themselves in the lawless city of New Phoenix. That is the unspoken rule. Unfortunately, a locally well-known thief Kard decides to break this rule by saving a young newcomer to the city. However, the man soon proves to be more trouble than he's worth, when he sets off a series of events that bring the grim reaper onto Kard's doorstep.
